Zope Performance Methodology?

I have scanned through the ZAG, the various how-tos and tips on Zope.org, and searched the archives of this mailing list, but I haven't found anything which puts into writing a concrete methodology for optimizing performance of Zope. If there is one and I'm just too stupid to find it, I'd love to get a pointer. If there isn't one I'll write it, if people will send me information and teach me the zen of optimal Zope performance. Here are the kinds of things I would expect to see in this kind of document: 1. Performance-oriented Platforms * Which platform (hardware / OS combination) is the best for Zope?: - if money is no object - if money is the main object - if it has to run on a cheap PC, 'cause that's what people have - etc. Questions this needs to answer: - Do multiple processors help? - How much RAM? - Disk subsystem recommendations / tradeoffs - Solaris vs. Linux vs. FreeBSD [vs. Windows NT?] ... - etc... 2. Performance-oriented Configurations * What is the right way to set up Zope?: - which web server to use - which CGI configuration to use - which ZODB storage system to use - etc. Questions this needs to answer: - ZServer vs. Apache [vs. IIS?] ... - PCGI vs. FastCGI [vs. ??] - ZODB in file system vs. database - which database? - etc.? 3. Performance Tuning I don't know where to even start asking questions here, but I read a cursory mention that zope.org was recently sped up considerably by playing with some caching parameters, or something like that. So detailed tuning suggestions are needed for: - operating system - web server - Zope - ?? 4. Performance-oriented Programming Performance discussions of different approaches to solving the same problem when developing customizations to Zope. That is, which objects are expensive to use, how do you use things efficiently, how expensive is acquisition, etc. Thanks! dtml/namespace problem

Hi. I have always been able to nest dtml methods inside the same folder or calling methods within the acquisition hierarchy (upward) , one calling another, calling another, etc But now I cannot make this same process work when I try it using different levels of folder hierachy (downards): A simple example: / | - testroot (dtml method) | + input (Folder) | -- test1 (dtml method) | -- test2 (dtml method) The contents are the following (all are one-liners): 1) testroot (at the root folder): <dtml-var "input.test1()"> Note: If I try w/o the quotes and parenthesis then it does not recognize 'input.test'. Is this supposed to work like this? 2) test1(at the 'input' folder): <dtml-var test2> Note: I tried to add quotes and parenthesis but it made no difference here. I also tried to fully qualify the variable, making it 'intput.test2' because I thought that maybe it was evaluating it from the perspective of the caller, which is in the root folder. But this did not work either. 3) test2 (at the 'input' folder): <h2>Hello!</h2> I always get an error when calling /testroot . Empty queries crash zope?

It would appear (and I have tested this on 3 machines now, 2 linux and 1 nt) that if I enter a ZSQL Query and then test it and get no resultset, that I crash the zope server?? How is this possible? -- Don't go to bed with no price on your head. -- Baretta

Zope woes continue - server going down regularly.

Ok, I feel like the Cold-Fusion-Man today, I have a window open on my desktop showing the 'top' output of my server. Whenever the CPU usage goes up to over 90%, I know that the PCGI process is no longer responding and I restart Zope. Restarting the server does not help any more than restarting Zope itself. Repeat ad nauseum every 30-45 minutes if I'm lucky. This afternoon : using Zope 2.10 -------------------------------- I installed and set up Zope 2.10 (using PCGI behind Apache) and transfered my site over it. It *seemed* to be holding up OK. CPU never went up to 90%. But I noticed that several times I'd get the fd=3 error. Then within 2 hours of use, I get this error when external users try to access the site : Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: NameError Error Value: name_param Even from the administration interface, I can't access anything. Everything returns : Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: NameError Error Value: type And now CPU is at 0% - probably because nobody's any longer accessing our site :( So, again I had to restart Zope and then the site returned to normal. In a few hours, I'm going to have to (a) leave the computer and (b) sleep... and I'll be unable to do this manual monitoring/restarting of the server. So, I'm quite desperate to seek a solution to this soon. To this end, does anybody have any ideas : 1) where to get better debugging information to help identify the source of the problem. 2) better yet, any idea what the problem(s) could be ? Configuration : --------------- - FreeBSD 3.2 - Zope 2.1 running behind Apache - MySQL database using ZMySQLDA - 40,000 dynamic pageviews per day though it'll be about zero now, after 24 hours of downtime. z2.py : ------- ## General configuration options IP_ADDRESS='xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' (I'd rather not say whilst my server's buggered) DNS_IP='' UID='nobody' LOG_FILE='Z2.log' HTTP_PORT=8080 HTTP_ENV={} FTP_PORT=8021 PCGI_FILE='Zope.cgi' MONITOR_PORT=8099 MODULE='Zope' NUMBER_OF_THREADS=16 LOCALE_ID=None FCGI_PORT=None Zope.cgi is unchanged since installation. chas

The point of ultra simple syntax (such as in the Rebol examples) and the potential impact on ease of use is directly related to a very brief exchange I've had recently with a couple of Zope fans. I made a post to this list asking for feedback about Rules Based Systems, and Natural Language. Wouldn't it be great to give users an expression builder that could help them create sentences that would in turn be directly interpreted by the engine behind the interface? It's tough to think of a simpler way to ask a cumputer to do what you want. It's even harder to imagine any system / community better able to deliver than Zope!

Complexity just naturally grows in step with flexibility. A lot of this really goes back to the root question of "what is DTML really for?", which I won't go into at length (there have been several threads about it lately). I would, however, suggest that in many ways the use of External Methods or Python Methods is the natural and Pythonic way to deal with reducing complexity (at least apparent complexity from the point of view of the DTML user). While there is no equivalent to your send-page example implemented as a simple embedded DTML command, it is pretty easy to hide that complexity behind External Methods or Python Methods that implement those "commands": <dtml-call "send_page_to_someone('luke(a)rebol.com', 'http://rebol.com')"> I'll be the first to admit that this is not quite as pretty, but it is not unreasonably ugly. > How could Zope use Rebol or a rebol-like python external > method to best > effect? > any ideas?
