This is one way, but can be rather difficult if you have lots of External Methods, it's a bit messy to keep your code in one place away from your object. A better solution is to create a Python class (in a Product) and sprinkle a little ZClass magic pixie dust in the __init__.py file to make the Python class (PClass) subclassable by a ZClass. Thus when you create your ZClass, you can specify that one of it's base classes be the PClass that you made subclassable. Now all of the PClasse's python methods are methods of the ZClass. Yeah! The Catalog uses this method heavily. In fact, the only methods actually defined in the ZClass are the managment and searching interfaces. This is probably a result of the DateTime.py class either not having your timezone setup or it only being setup partially i.e. missing the full timezone name reported by some operating systems. If you run Python standalone and type the following : import time print time.tzname it will report your current timezone. If you cannot get Python to run standalone then use the following as an external method : import time def getTimeZone(): return time.tzname After creating a new external method, use the Try It tab to view the resulting timezone. If you then open the DateTime.py file (found in "[your zope install]\lib\python\DateTime\DateTime.py"), goto the _zmap on line 186 and search for the timezone reported above. If it is not present then add a line similar to the following (which I have added to my DateTime.py): 'AUS Eastern Standard Time':'aest' and the lowercase version 'aus eastern standard time':'aest' where the key is the timezone string reported previously and aest is the abbreviated timezone of your area (the following New Zealand times are defined NZT, NZDT, NZST - if none of these are correct then add one in a similar format to 'nzdt':'GMT+13' where the GMT+13 represents the difference from Greenwich Mean Time in hours). Z Classes Question

Hello, everyone. I am fooling around with Z Classes, familiarizing myself with 1.11's new features. First off, let me congratulate the DC guys on some cool new stuff; 1.11 is looking sharp! In my playing around, I have run across a situation which has prompted a question in my mind. Let's say I have a Z Class which is a subclass of 'Object Manager', so it's a container for other objects. Let's call this class MyFolderClass. MyFolderClass has an 'index_html' method which displays a simple HTML page. Now, I create an instance of this class called 'my_folder'. I want to be able to create a DTML Method, 'index_html', inside 'my_folder', overriding the default 'index_html' from MyFolderClass. However, when I try to do so, I get a "Bad Request" error (I can followup with more explicit information, should it be required.) Am I trying to do a No-No, or am I running into something which is not finished, yet? Thanks, --jkh

ExternalMethod is seeing an exception in some part of the external method. in processing that exception, it assumes the exception type is a string, which it almost never is. this usually causes a second exception in the exception-handling code, which kills the function (and produces the traceback you see).

I'm trying to understand the distinction between External Methods and directly publishing Python objects. The various tutorials on Zope discuss publishing objects and there is one on External Methods. Can objects be published without using External Methods? Imagine you drop in an external method that graps information about the user and, when called, gets more information from [LDAP|NIS|NT SAM|SQL]. The external method is a behavior of the class which gets information about an instance. Pretty neat! Some other things on the drawing board (but not any time soon): 1) Security on Property Sheets. Imagine creating a Membership system where you wanted to sell upsell levels to Members. If a person owns their Member object (so they can change their email address and other properties), then what stops them from changing the upsell level? With access control on property sheets, you segregate the privileged properties to a sheet which they can't edit. 2) Property Sheets, schemas, and forms. Imagine properties being richer objects with things like: o constraints -- don't let values over 100 in here o title -- when used in an input form or report, display this o widget -- what HTML widget to use when collecting info (e.g. SELECT) With this information you can create better wizards to help make forms. 3) Better wizards. Jim has cooked up one and we talked about what else we can do. For instance, have a multi-step wizard (like Z Tables) that asks questions and provides information, such as: o Step 1 -- Here is an overview of what we are going to do o Step 2 -- What do you want to call this class o Step 3 -- Do you want to base your class on other classes? o Step 4 -- What are the basic properties to collect when adding a new Foo? o Step 5 -- What are the types of the properties you named? o Step 6 -- Create o Step 7 -- Finish (or advanced, such as views) ...and splat, you have a new Foo class. I'm hoping to get this in range of people that want to "store their kinds of things". All of this is at least a couple of months off, unless someone submits patches :^) Thanks for the input! --Paul
