Correction: Tested with 1.10.2. Under 1.11.pr1 I can't even get the Zope-distributed ZGadflyDA to work (known bug?), let alone the latest version of Gadfly. Has ZGadflyDA been updated to 2.0? Losing the right to be anonymous

So I am working for this professor, and he wants a temporary file drop location for students to put their class assignments on the server. I say: Zope. (of course). No worrying about network protocols. Accessible from anywhere there is a browser, secure, etc, etc. Plus, removing the users and files later on would be just a few clicks... Magic! I set the professor up as Manager of a Zope folder, and under that folder, I set-up some folders for the students. They have individual Manager rights in their subfolders, so all they have to do is upload their files, and all I have to do is put together a few lines of DTML making appropriate links in a document in the upper folder to nicely display the files in the student folders. The problem is that once a student has logged in as Manager of a subfolder and added their files, they cannot view the public interface in the professor's folder until they quit and restart the web browser. By logging in as a manager of a subfolder, they lose rights to view stuff they could view "anonymous"-ly. This is with Zope-1.10.3b1, but 2.0a3 seems to have the same behavior. I had never noticed this before. Then again, I am always using Zope as Manager from the top level. or purely anonymously. Anyway, this could be a word of warning for similar situations or a bug report or a request for suggestions how I could have done this better. Redirect methods, Zserver vs. Apache

Thanks for the input/discussion on virtual hosts, ZServer vs. Apache, and the two methods I can think of to support different virtual hosts with Zope on the same machine. The resource usage I'm most interested in is memory, not processor time. It would appear that a threaded Zserver could replace my anonymous FTP daemon, Apache, and a set of custom site-building scripts with a constantly running instance of Python. A threaded and interpreted approach is my first choice; if it weren't so expensive I would be using Roxen with SiteBuilder even though it lacks the object orientation of Zope. The machine serving my web sites does not have unlimited memory, and I think it's ridiculous to expect an ISP's machine to run tens or hundreds of copies of a process no matter how well the OS can deal with it. So, assuming that I want to take the risk of going with the newer ZServer included with 2.x alpha, how do I best go about enhancing it to support my needs, and increasing the chances of a stable site? I assume using it with older versions of other components would help, as would learning about the interface between ZServer and the publisher. I'm interested in redirecting different virtual domains into (a) seperate Zope processes or (b) different branches of the Zope tree. (b) sounds more interesting to me for reasons of resource usage and sharing of elements between several sites. Roxen had some interesting characteristics related to plugging in network service "modules" that could handle things like proxy caching, FTP service, and enhanced HTML processing. Is this similar to Zope's products combined with Medusa as a framework for network services? Roxen's implementation was buggy or incomplete but looked promising.

Building Zope 1.10.3 on FreeBSD

Hi, I want to install Zope on a Virtual Server for evaluation and possible incorporation into a project that I am working on. But the installation is quite a headache. I installed and built the source of Python 1.5.1. I installed and built the source of Zope 1.10.3. Well, I tried to build it but when I ran the command "python w_pcgi.py" within my Zope directory, it choked. As far as I can tell, the gcc of the Components/ExtensionClass/ExtensionClass.c failed pretty badly (I got a bunch of "undefined symbol"s). Has anyone had this problem? Does it have to do with the platform I am using or the gcc version? Thanks for your help, Mary Verio Web Hosting

The top level 'acl_users' folder is still importing the BoboPOS package, which is causing the wrong transaction manager to be used. The latest version of CVS fixes this bug. -Michel

Having the exact problem, but I think I got it to go away (though not completely, see below): I just noticed in the utilities directory there are, obviously, some python-written utilities. I used one, bbb.py, to convert the Data.bbb.in file (which is ZODB2) to Data.fs (ZODB3). I had previously stopped the Zope process, so I restarted and got neither the "FS21 warn" statements nor the over flow errors. But, just checking, I now get an attribute error when I try to commit changes to a DTML doc/method. The traceback:  And now this problem has mysteriously gone away. I appear to get this when editing a Zope object for the first time. In spite of the error the changes I make still get committed, and with subsequent changes the error does not occur. Could this be an artifact of the program used to convert from ZODB2 format to ZODB3? To answer my last question: Yes, the latest (1.0) version of Gadfly does seem to work with Zope (tested with 1.11.0pr1; I'm going to test out 2.0 shortly). You need to tell Zope that adr_list is a list; otherwise, it's assumed to be a string. Just add ":list" to the form variable name, thusly: <input type="hidden" name="adr_list:list" value=""> Note that if adr_list really is a list (I don't know what your ldif() function does), you should replace the above with this:  <input type="hidden" name="adr_list:list" value="">  Why? Because Zope doesn't -- in my experience, I could be wrong -- take the standard Python syntax for lists as input. Which means that if you enter an URL roughly like this: http://www.foo.com/show_it?adr:list=['a','b','c'] then Zope will assume ['a','b','c'] to be the first item of a 1-length list. To pass multiple list items, this URL is correct: http://www.foo.com/show_it?adr:list=a&adr:list=b&adr:list=c Zope will join all duplicately-named list arguments into a single list. Hence the above DTML code, which might yield the following HTML output: <input type="hidden" name="adr_list:list" value="a"> <input type="hidden" name="adr_list:list" value="b"> <input type="hidden" name="adr_list:list" value="c"> and give you the URL above. As an aside, let me mention that while this system might seem odd at first, it's actually very cool, and quite useful, too. For example, think of a document system where, for every document, editors should type in one or more authors. Instead of having _one_ editor box where the user is required to enter author names as a comma-separated list, you can use Zope lists. The DTML code you might use for this is:   <input type="text" name="authors:list" size="40" value=""><br>   <input type="text" name="authors:list" size="40"><br> <input type="text" name="authors:list" size="40"><br> <input type="text" name="authors:list" size="40"><br> This makes sure that editors always have three available edit fields for entering three more names. If an editor is editing a document and suddenly needs to store more than three more names, he can press "Submit" and continue editing -- he'll be given three more fields. And so on. A more advanced alternative is to provide a "More fields" button that will expand the form without saving the data first, much like Zope's management screens and the "Taller", "Shorter", etc. buttons.
