Some of the older build notes in the Python distribution mention integration with Openstep (or at least, Objective C), but I haven't chased this too much. A Zope-EOF bridge would rock. Come to think of it, a walk on Rockawalkin bridge (actual place in Maryland) would too. :)

Release notes mention that alpha 2 "will be released in the week of May 26," which obviously did not happen. Are you behind schedule? The alpha 1 todo list is relatively serious, eg., "Most database adapters are likely to be problematic [...] when running Zope 2 with multiple threads" -- eek! Which ones are subject this to this problem? I could not find documentation on compatibility issues with ZODB2, either (probably covered on this list at some point; would you care to repeat?), ie. can I just copy by data.bbb into the alpha version? Having spent some time looking at OpenStep recently, I believe even more firmly in it. ZClasses (part of Zope 2) do bring this closer to light. They make it fairly easy to write a user-interfaceless Product class on disk, and then you can subclass it through the ZClass interface (along with other classes, like ObjectManager or Folder), and you can create Property Sheets, Methods (ie, DTML methods and other external methods) and Views (tabs) for the new ZClass and its instances. We hope someday to have a way of being able to subclass normal Python classes this way with little or no fuss (ala the External Method/Pluggable Brain mechanisms) and bring Zope closer to one of the original ideas of Bobo -- publishing Python objects on the web. This will make it even easier to bring existing code into Zope. (I still love the fact that (a couple of years ago) I was able to turn an application from a socket-server based app to a Bobo app in a matter of hours). .jPS

This would work... IMO, the _best_ solution to this problem is to use ssh (and scp) which are essentially secure (i.e., encrypted) versions of telnet and cp (they do a WHOLE lot more as well). There are Unix and Win32 clients for both (although for some strange reason the Win32 scp doesn't recursively copy :( --Rob

external search engines (altavista, etc.)

I have just joined the list, but I have been reading about Zope for a while now. I think this package is cool! I also like the neat packages that were announced today. Can search engines such as AltaVista mine the information out of a Zope website. I have seen responses to other questions that there are ways to use a search engine to search a Zope website, but can the commercial laces search the website. It would be nice for other places to know about things in your website, unless you want it to be private. Clarence T. Pate

Neither of these two sections of the control panel have been implimented yet for 2.0 when using the ZODB3 database. Also, the quickstart database only comes up when you run Zope with the BoboPOS2 database. Newbie: Problem with Zserver

After spending some hours to decide if I should continue with apache or start with zserver, I began with Zserver. My problem is the following traceback occuring when I call http://localhost:9673 Unhandled exception in thread: Traceback (innermost last) File "D:\Programme\Website\Zserver\PubCore\ZserverPublisher.py", line 92 in __init__ publish_module< TypeError: unexpected keyword argument: request I'm using Zope 1.10.3b1 on Win NT and I've installed the latest version of Zpublisher in the lib directory. While we should have some kind of object that better deals with logic, I don't think there will be much sympathy for creating something that looks like ASP or PHP. Let me limit the conversation back to your subject line: <% vs. <!--# The latter was originally chosen to be like the dominant syntax at the time (SSI) and to be "legal HTML". I think the latter has proven to be total bunk, as almost no DTML Documents are valid (they get nearly everything from the fragments of standard header and footer). What are some reasons to consider changing from the SSI syntax? o It's hideous, cumbersome, and everybody hates it o No tools support editing it o It isn't conformant with the direction of HTML o Any others? Let's evaluate the situation in light of these. It's Hideous ------------ Yes. Tool Support ------------ The SSI syntax just happens to enjoy nearly zero support out there. Things like Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver, and Emacs HTML Mode just can't be convinced to handle it nicely. Does anyone view this issue as important? Future of HTML -------------- What role does SSI play in the future of HTML? Zero. Of course, neither do any of the alternative syntaxes mentioned previously. Thus, I'd like to list some requirements for a future syntax: 1) Within reach of "content managers". I won't budge on this one. I think XSL will have a role in Zope, but *NOT* as a DTML replacement. 2) Reasonably close to DTML. The current DTML accomplishes some level of functionality. While some small amount might not be permitted in some change, or might be permitted in a clumsy way, there should be a reasonable match. 3) Coherent with the HTML future. We have a choice: invent a syntax and, one by one, support every web authoring tool. Alternatively, we can stick to standards and wait for them to support it. Proposal -------- _If_ these were the requirements, then I think a reasonable proposal is XHTML: http://wdvl.com/Authoring/Languages/XML/XHTML/ http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/#future XHTML reworks HTML as an XML-compliant language. Most imporantly, you can extend it with new namespaces (like Zope instructions) without breaking the DTD, as is the case with ColdFusion et al. Why? 1) Alledgely it is the future of HTML. 2) Becoming well-formed means the authors can be given hints before saving changes, and Zope can do smarter things with structured data on the server. Why Not? 1) A number of differences with HTML might drive people off. 2) It isn't here yet. 3) Zope syntax might not be mappable into XML. At any rate, I'd love for someone in the Zope community to march off and take a look at this, then make a proposal for how things should be changed.
