Zope performance too low ?

I guess the subscribers to this list, more or less, like working with Zope. Developing dynamic pages is quick and easy, and code/design integration is very comfortable. However I'm starting to doubt if it's worth it. Some quick benchmarking with apache's ab utitlity gave the following results on my server(50 requests, no concurrency, ab ran on the server machine): Copy of the Zope welcome screen(served from disk): 204.08 requests per second The Zope welcome screen(served from Zope): 14.38 requests per second A page with lots of DTML Code(about 50 lines): 2.68 requests per second Repeating the benchmark gave similar results. How does your Zope perform? Can you live with it? I'm not sure if I can.

Direct SQL-Method traversal

I have implemented a simple ZSQL-Method (fetch) which takes one argument, a record number (nr). As far as I understand the ZSQL Manual, I should be able to write URL's of the form fetch/nr/<number>/showit where showit is a DTML-Document which can access the result of the fetch query. How do I access this result? I tried to use the column names (like , where shortname is a result column name), but Zope gave me a Key Error. What is the correct syntax to access the result columns of such a query? Stefan.

ANNOUNCE: EXPERIMENTAL DTML Syntax change

Zope 2.0.0 alpha 2 (and public CVS) includes an experimental change to the DTML parser to allow HTML tags syntax and character entity reference as an alternative to the server-side-include (SSI) syntax. Basically, source like:  <ul>  <li> <a href="//manage_workspace"> </a>  </ul>  to be written as: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <ul> <dtml-in objectValues> <li> <a href="&dtml-URL1;/&dtml-id;/manage_workspace"> <dtml-var title></a> <dtml-/in> </ul> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> This format is provided to overcome some of the problems with the SSI syntax: - It looks more like and fits in with HTML, - It is easier to type, - It is easier to type and slightly less verbose, - It is, perhaps, easier to teach HTML editors how to deal with it. I'm very interested to hear how helpful this is. Do people find this a significant improvement? If people don't find it useful then it will not be included in Zope 2.0 final, and perhaps not in the Zope 2.0 betas. Note: - This format does *not*, in my mind, significantly reduce the desire for an XML variant of DTML. I think there is room for *both* XML and non-XML variants of DTML, if only because sometimes people will need to have DTML documents that are not XML well formed, for example when generating non-XML text. - This does not address the desire for a nicer through-the-web scripting language for Zope. We intend to provide the ability to build Python methods through the web that are as safe (from a security point of view) as existing DTML methods. Heres my canView Method

This method will in most instances return 1 if the specified user can view a particular object. You have to give it a string path of the object relative to the current context. It will handle url type paths as well ie  and  will both work. I think this will give the correct result in most cases. sql varchar truncated?

hi, i'm having a little problem that i hope someone might have some insight on. i'm using Zope with MS SQL Server 7.0, via the ODBC database adapter. i have a database field called 'description', which is a varchar of length 500. when i write and read back a value via SQL methods, the description string is truncated to about 250 characters. it looks like MS SQL is receiving the full string. if i try to write more than 500 chars, i get a SQL error. if i write less than 500, i get no error. but when i read back the string via a select SQL method, i only get back ~250 characters. i can't verify at the moment what's in the database- i'm FAR away. i've got an email to the DBA to check it out, but i was hoping somewhere here might have an idea of the problem. is a string variable limited to 256 chars in python or zope? i tested the SQL methods directly from zope, to insure that something wasn't happening with HTTP. thanks in advance for any help, -scott included below are the contents of the the two SQL methods (pretty straightforward...): the write method: insert into tblTrainingEvent (Title, Statewide, AreaID, description) values ('', 1, 1,) the read method: select description from tblTrainingEvent where

MVC pattern

Hello, Does a template exist for implementing an MVC (VisualWorks Smalltalk) like structure for Products. The Product example I have shows inheriting Zope class info and DTML info into the "domain object". I'd like a pattern where the Python objects remain clean, are wrapped by a value model, and linked via the value model with a presentation scheme (DTML). Iterating over folders with a certain attribute

I want to retrieve the names of all folders that have attribute sequence_id and then iterate over them, while having them sorted by that attribute. I can't do something like:  because not all folders have this attribute. Am I going to have to build an array of these objects, and then iterate over them sorted? backing up Zope2

Is running "Pack" in Zope still the best way to backup a site? (other than export). What I'm thinking of is like the reverse of utilities/load_site.py. I was trying to FTP an entire Folder and could not. When I 'get' a Folder, it says 550 Error opening file but I can cd into it and 'get' it's contents.
