It seems I had to do something with ZServer too (something about FCNTL not happening properly), but after I made my modification (which is still locked away on an unaccesible UFS volume at the moment), Zope was bloody fast on my 233/G3. :)

One of us is probably really missing something here. I also have no trouble taking files from the file system and stuffing them into zope as dtml from external methods. The problem I'm wrestling with is the opposite - I can grab zope dtml objects in external methods, but I can't figure out how to call some mythical function render(foo) the way zope does - converting all the zope bits (such as ) into the same html that the zope ORB would. trouble with Zope 2.0.0a1, manage_addZGadflyMethod

Hi, I am new to Zope and can´t get a database connection up and running. I downloaded Zope 2.0.0a1 and starting it using /home/chl/Python-1.5.2/bin/python z2.py -2 -d 192.168.10.1. its running fine on my Linux system (2.2.5 kernel, SuSE 6.1). When trying parts of your HowTo http://www.zope.org/Documentation/HowTo/SampleGadfly I always get an error when running    in the last line: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: manage_addZGadflyMethod --------------------- When I try to create a ZSQL-Method, for example create table zopista (col_a integer, col_b integer) I get, when adding, testing and submitting the error: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. exceptions.AttributeError Sorry, a Zope error occurred. ---------------------- whats wrong? Where can I get working database demos? In detail, how can I create a table to play with? Chris

MySQL & lost server connections

I seem to remember this being asked before, but I couldn't find anything in the archives... :P Basically, it looks like I'm losing my connection from Zope to the MySQL database. While the site remains busy, it stays connected, but if there's a long dead period the connection goes away. Both Zope and MySQL are running on the same BSDI 3.1 machine. Its Zope-1.10.2 and MySQL-3.21.33b. Is there anything I can do to fix this? One is to put in a an abstract framework in place inside zope for managing long running servers and thus make mailman a service of zope. The ability to have objects run for longer than just the web request is something that is missing in zope (and has been explained to me by others as being reasonably essential for a weblication). Long running processes can accept input from a variaty of sources and intergrate it into the repository or stream it off to other processes such as applets in web pages. The other way is the one I dreamed up last night. You could seperate out the membership storage code and the archive code in mailman. Then you could override the these routines to interface instead to a private zope pages. That way zope could be used to manage the data in the variaty of backends it supports. I'm going to check the mailman code now to see how hard this is to do. If its easy then I'll do it now as I'm running out of nice solutions. This is basically what I did to get it working. I think the libraries being in a weird place stem from the --with-next-framework option which I assume expects to be put into an Openstep framework setup and set's Pythons paths to be:: .../lib/ instead of the usual:: .../lib/python1.5/ (the source says it's because NeXT's Frameworks do automatic versioning). This gets compiled _right into Python!_, but none of the makefiles and friends seem to catch it. My blue box STILL refuses to work (waaa!), so I spend a lot of time in either MacOS 8.6 or MacOS X Server (mostly in 8.6 due to (a) a better browser, and (b) more familier tools (yay Alpha!):)). Thus, I don't have access to that particular bit of patched Python source right now. It made things significantly easier, but was kindof a hack. I'd be very interested in getting more information about the NeXT Frameworks and maybe configuring the default Python makefiles to have a "make framework" option that basically acts like "make install", but takes into account any existing Python framework (like Objective Everything's for example) and follows the right versioning behaviour and other NeXT framework setups. Essentially: for Python: ./configure --with-next-framework --with-threads --with-dyld --prefix=[whatever] then put libpython1.5.dylib into /usr/lib No matter what you use for --prefix, this will put python and its development libraries in a really weird configuration that zope will not understand properly, so I symlinked the heck out of what I had to make it look like it was in "standard" locations. I suppose you could really move them around, too. adding LDLIBRARY=/usr/lib/libpython($VERSION).dylib into python's Makefile.pre.in in /lib/python1.5/config fixes the problems with finding the dylib change "sys.executable" to "[whatever]/bin/python" in wo_pcgi.py and do.py in your zope root. and I may have forgotten a thing or two, but it should compile and run. If you take better notes and get it working, you might post those to the list. I have a feeling OS X is going to be yet another popular platform for Zope. Now I need to try to get Mailman working... Automatically restarting ZPyGreSQLDA connection

Hi, Is there any way to catch the error from a Zope Database Adapter and restart it ? I'm experiencing what I suspect are timeout problems (sometimes a bunch of imapd's drive the load to >10 and make the computer really slow). The symptom is that at some point I get a traceback from _pgmodule instead of nice page. The only way to fix it after that is going to manage screens and shutdown/startup the connection I would like to catch this exception and do the shutdown/startup automatically (and perhaps log that it happened) Or would the only reasonable place to do such things be inside the DA ? The latter should not be too hard, just try: to send an empty query before the real one (con.query("")) and in except: open a new one (and log the error if desired) The overhead should be almost nothing, at least when using domain sockets. --------------- Hannu
