Converting a string to an int

Hi, I'm working with a form that allows users to enter quantities. Into a table. on the next form, if I use <dtml-var "_[Category + '_qty']"> I get the value from the previous form exactly as I had planned--sortof. I then proceeded to do some calculations based on this variable and was told that I couldn't because it was a string. No problem thought I, I'll convert it to an integer and I used the following code to do so. <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('qty', _.string.atoi(_[Category + '_qty']))"> However, when I access the form, I get a Zope error that says: Error type: ValueError Error value: invalid literal for atoi() So, while it displays correctly, it does not appear to be a string, or an int: what is it? I have wondered if there was some weird translation error working with the _[Category...] stuff, so I assigned the result of _[Category...] to another variable and tried operating on it with the same result. Not a dumb question at all... I do this kind of thing all the time with Zope, and it is not necessarily completely obvious. If you want to set the value of a property, all you need to do is call: <dtml-call "manage_changeProperties({'propname' : propvalue})"> An alternate form, if the properties are all in the REQUEST variable (via a form, or whatever) and the REQUEST variables have the same names as the properties: <dtml-call "manage_changeProperties(REQUEST)"> If you don't want to log in to make the change, use a "Proxy Role" on the DTML Method. You can set the proxy role to "Manager", and then that particular method can do anything a Manager can do. Kevin

absolute newbie question

hello, i worked for quite a long time with an odb content management system of a friend. i got used to get and set properties in the odb by simple assigning values to, resp. reading out values from the properties. something like <% node = new Node ("msg"); node.msgText = query ("msg"); % after a while playing around with zope (the version 2 beta) i found it wonderfully easy to read out data with dtml-objects. but i got stuck and confused trying to fill some data into a property the equivalent way. well, yes, it's not a problem in the management screen, no question. this works fine. but i am thinking of a web page one can open in a browser window without logging in or using the management screen. there, for example, one should be able to post a message and this message will be put into the odb. something like  (dumb question?) best regards, piefke

Hmm... Sounds like your "admin" user is set up as a superuser on one machine, but not on the other. To bind to port 80, you need root (or superuser) access... Serving Zope on port 80

I have two machines. On one of them I can use apache on port 80 and ZServer on port 8080 or I can reverse the ports. On the other, I can only use ZServer on 8080, but not on port 80. When I start Zope, I get File "/usr/local/Zope2.0b4/ZServer/medusa/asyncore.py, line 205, in bind return self.socket.bind (addr) socket.error: (13, 'Permission denied') On both machines I am running both Zope and Apache as "admin." I believe the permissions are set the same on both machines, but obviously I am wrong. Can someone give me some pointers on where to look? Announce: First step in PythonMethods

It took longer than I thought, thanks partly to a nasty stomach flu, but I've taken the first step in creating a PythonMethod Product. http://www.zope.org:18200/Members/4am/PythonMethod has the nitty-gritty. I'm satisfied with the performance of SafeBlock; Rough testing (available at the site) indicates that loading from ZODB is comparable in speed to DTML, and execution is an order of magnitude faster. Next step is to wrap this up in a Product, and think about what exactly 'import' should do in PythonMethod code.

ZCatalog 'or-ing' results

Hi, There was a discussion back when ZCatalog alpha was announced about or-ing the search results. The specific application in mind was being able to take one search term from a user and search for it in title, summary and text_content. This, IMHO, is a pretty important thing in terms of getting a search engine going on a site. There was a bit of discussion about query languages. I'm keen on seeing something happen sooner than later when it comes to searching. Apparently, there is already some functionality implemented for taking the union of result sets. Perhaps a really simple scheme could be implemented. Something like "REQUEST.set('search', [{'metatype' : 'KMArticle', 'title' : search_string}, {'metatype' : KMArticle', 'text_content' : search_string}, {'metatype' : 'KMArticle', 'summary' : search_string}])"... A bit verbose and not as general as a query language, perhaps, but it seems like this might be easy to implement based on functions that already exist... Has there been any work with this to get Search going on the new Zope.org site? Am I missing something that is in the code already? Kevin

Those are important) Ah, I missed the quotes previously. I just tested it and it works great. Thank you. Definitely better than the nested 'with's too. I've been playing with Zope all night and morning. It's pretty good for prototyping. But it's becoming a bit crowded in the root directory where I have over 30 common elements (ranging from database connections to navigation menus to javascripts and stylesheets). I can see this becoming an organisational nightmare for very large sites. It would be great to have the following folder structure + common_elements + javascripts + images + stylesheets + database_connectors + navigation_menus + folderA + folderB But I can't work out how to reference the objects inside the subfolders of the 'common_elements' folder accessible by the documents in folderA and folderB. Unless I put <dtml-with common_elements> into the standard_html_header and </dtml-with> in the standard_html_footer but this will fail if I wish to over-ride standard_html_header in folderA or folderB. It also pollutes the namespace unnecessarily for documents inside folderA that do not actually require the common elements. Does anyone have any recommendations for organizing folders and common elements as above ?
