FTP access to new Zope site

ZSQL method - PostgreSQL error

A strange error I have encountered today : Environment: RedHat 5.2 i386 Linux Zope 2.0.0b4 running with ZServer (not with apache) PostgreSQL 6.5.1 ZPyGreSQLDA-0-0-3 PyGreSQL v2.4 I am defining a Z SQL method in order to select some records from 3 linked tables. If the query will return only two fields (date and value) everything is ok, I can see the results, publish them. If I am selecting 3 fields from the tables (date, explanation and value) I am receiving the error: Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: pg.error Error Value: ERROR: hash table out of memory. Use -B parameter to increase buffers. This is a PostgreSQL error and it's related with some PostgreSQL backend parameters. The buffers can be increased with a -B parameter. BEFORE increasing the number of buffers I have tried the same SQL select in "psql" (the PostgreSQL monitor). It succeeded!!! I have tried the same SQL select in PgAccess (the PostgreSQL graphical administration tool). It succeeded!!! The tables aren't so big (5 Mb the whole database). The strange thing is that the same query is succesfully executed by other front-ends (psql is written in "C" and PgAccess in Tcl/Tk). The default # of buffers is 64. I restarted PostgreSQL with 128 and then 256 buffers. The same result. Zope cannot retrieve that select. That means that the error could be in PyGreSQL module? You'll probably want to check out http://www.zope.org/Download/ZCatalog/ZCatalogTutorial (which I believe is also in lib/python/Products/ZCatalog/ZCatalog.txt in your Zope distribution) In general, to use it with DTML Documents should be pretty straightforward (I think). Create a ZCatalog object (possibly in your Zope root). For any Property you set up in your DTML Doc that you want indexed and searchable, you need to enter that property name in the Indexes tab of the ZCatalog. (You choose FieldIndex if you want the field to contain one discrete value, regardless of spaces, TextIndex if you want a full text index that you can search). You can use the Z Search Interface, as Michel mentioned in his reply to get going. The tutorial above lists some DTML for searching. I've used it like this: <dtml-in "Catalog({'metatype': 'MyZClass', 'category': 'top_stories'})"> <dtml-var title> </dtml-in> Will list the titles of any "MyZClass" type object that has the category property set to "top_stories". There's no one way to use ZCatalog and create the searches you want. It's pretty flexible, but that flexibility also means that it's a little more complicated to get started with until the docs catch up. Playing around with a ZCatalog object and a ZSearch Interface will get you going, and you can probably find out some more of what's there by checking out the ZCatalog source code. Another way to help get acquainted would be to check out the beta Zope2 site http://www.zope.org:18200/ Every page has a DTML Source link that lets you see how the page was produced. Kevin

I think I discovered a bug (might be even two, now that I think about it): I have a simple ZSQL query that returns some 500 rows. I created a standard search interface (size=50), which of course produces the "next x results" hyperlink at the bottom of the table. Now: 1.) the Hyperlink always says "Next 1 results", where it should say 50... (or whatever I put in the "size" parameter of the search interface's "in" tag) 2.) if I move forward to, say, row 150 or so, using the link sometimes I don't get a page displayed but the Navigator-dialog "save as ... (application/octet-stream)" appears. (I can certainly save the file to disk, reopen it via "file-open" and it gets displayed correctly. of course it does: a "file-open" does not transmit MIME-Types...) If I change the "size" parameter in the search interface to another value (e.g. 200) I get the "save as.."-dialog right away... Is this problem already known, and maybe even solved yet? Simple question

Hi I've made an "images" directory like this / |_ images |_ news |_ etc.... How can I access images contained in this directory from other directories ? Ok, images all have an ID but I don't want to give the path by myself... Oh dear, first it's nice of Michael to send a reply. But can any of you Digital Creations people see what the problem with the answer? Well before I go critcising it, first let me say I'll have some off-list discussion with Michael to see if I can get the sort of documentation going we need. But (and I'm sorry Michael to be picking on you - I KNOW its not you fault) what those "giving up in frustration" people are talking about is the fact that there is NO answer here(as is often the case in other replies/documentation - obviously NOT written by Michael by the way). This reply tells me how great ZCatalogue is(how fast etc. etc.) and how I can work with ZClasses(if I design them "right"). In effect this is a piece of either developer enthusiasm(always good to see) or marketing blurb(and if your frustrated already you can easily pick this option - I'm choosing not to by the way). So what this doesn't do is tell me how to search Zope objects by attribute value, which was the question I asked. It is in turns too much information and too little. So what I want to see is a simple piece of code that lets me search my Zope database where I can, as a complete novice, substitute my objects and my attributes to get back a list of things I can itterate over. Lets ignore perfomance, b-tree's, ZClass design etc. etc. Assume I have NOT installed ZCatalogue(unless of course it comes by default on my NT Zope 2.0 install, does it?), and I'm using DTML Documents. In short assume I am an idiot(you wont be so far wrong) but I need to get something working pretty quickly, and I'll make it graceful later. OK now the specifics are out of the way I want to quickly offer up a view on why we need to stop the development process(or slow it down severely) and address the documentation issue. In a word "SPECTRA". This is the new content management tool from Allaire, based on their ColdFusion web/database interface. Recently Allaire were out here doing demo's and training, we were invited, and attended. So basically it's in the same domain as Zope and it's VERY powerful. It will not by the way be the last product in this domain, but right now it's shaping up to be the competition for Zope. Now I don't really mind if Digital Creations don't think it is the competition, it is as far as potential customers are concerned(well the potential customer I work for anyway). The good news is that it's about Aus$12,000 per copy and wont really be ready for prime time for about 8-12 months(we think). The bad news is that it WILL ship with VERY VERY good documentation. In fact the ticket price isn't such a differentiator either; anyone (including you guys at DC) who thinks Zope is free is really fooling themseleves, ticket price is but one(small) component in the overall cost of software, poor documentation is another soaring cost to organisations such as ours. So the only real advantage left is the 8-12 months window, which we need to use for documentation. Now we might all think Zope and the python/OO technologies around it as well as its inherent design, flexibility, extensibleness means we have a better product here, and that only a deluded fool would use a relational based blah, blah, blah product. But the reality is that Allaire will beat us out here(they have a lot of experience with volume delivery) if we don't meet them on MANDETORY issues like good documentation. We have an opportunity to keep this area of our industry open, with the use of Zope. But it will pass us by if we dont get good documentation soon. This is but one of a range of arguments made here for getting on the documentation-for-dummies bandwagon. Phew that got really long, sorry to take so much of your time.
