wow... RHAT/Gnome is using my software!!!! (maybe i should da brought some stocks...j/k ;^)) I don't exactly know how to answer this, but maybe Bruce Perens (bruce(a)perens.com) knows more about high-volume traffic performance tuning with Zope and Squishdot... His squishdot site, technocrat.org, was slashdotted a few weeks back, and his machine was pretty modest but he did some tweaking and it held up and didnt go down or become unresponsive... I believe he was using Apache+Zserver too, although he was using debian, not redhat, linux... He's on vacation though, so he may not respond to your question until he gets back (in the meantime, I'll try to look for his comments about the tweaks...) Also, I know that Squishdot hasn't been optimized so there maybe a performance bottleneck in there somewhere... Strange behaving new web site

Scalability issues

I recently set up a Zope+Squishdot site. If I run a loop like: while true; do wget -o /dev/null -b --quiet -x http://developer.gnome.org:65348/gnome-news/ usleep 250000 done ...the server eventually becomes unresponsive and does not recover. The server is Zope 2.0.0b4, plus Squishdot 0.1.5a.localfixes and Tinytables, running on Red Hat Linux 6.0, kernel 2.2.10ac8. Dual PII, lots of RAM, blah blah. Depending on your setup, you may have to change the usleep time to reproduce the problem. This happens whether I run ZServer as the HTTP server, whether I run Apache+pcgi without ZServer, or whether I run Apache+pcgi with ZServer. I've tried changing the # of threads (-t in start script) to both 5 and 150, with no satisfactory results. I'm not asking for a million requests per second, just that (a) a way to handle overloads gracefully (b) a way to get more than a page request per second out of a zope server running on a fairly beefy box. Suggestions welcomed, -- Elliot Who me? I just wander from room to room.

This is _especially_ the case with source releases, where you have to run the installer to make sure that you get builds of the latest binaries. Samuel, I think what you are seeing is dependent on _where_ you are trying to use those variables. For example, if you try to use URL2 in a place where there aren't actually that many components to the url, you will get a KeyError (in other words, URLn or BASEn will only work if they can give you a meaningful value - for instance using URL2 when the url is http://www.foo.com/index.html is meaningless, because it cant chop two steps off of the url in that case). The ZClass methods are methods that are available to any instance of the ZClass. To use the methods, you need to first add an instance. Zope version of virtual hosts/includes?

Hello, there! We have a bunch of sites that we maintain using various methods, but are looking for a better solution than the ad-hoc things that seem to get thrown together, so I thought I'd take a look at Zope, since I'm a big Python fan. One of the techniques we use is to use virtual hosts to change header/footer information for documents. For example, if you visited http://public/ you'd get a view of the data with the public headers/menus/etc, and http://private/ would give a view with the private headers/menus/images/etc. The actual content of the page is the same, however. This is accomplished using inculdes, like #INCLUDE FILE="/x/TopHTML.inc" Then, the /x directory is mapped to different directories, depending on the virtual host that was used... Is there a straightforward way to accomplish this in Zope? Seems like Acquisition would have some way of doing it, but a quick look through some of the FAQs didn't seem to address this issue. Would the best way to be to set up some kind of content folder that isn't directly visible, and then public/private folders that acquire the content itself from a toplevel folder? Or is there another way entirely? Thanks for any help, Hunter
