Pluggable Brains?

People, Can someone point me to some documentation, messages or source code that will give me a handle on what 'pluggable brains' are and what I can do with them? Rob Page has just made a post saying that Zope/ZODB3/pluggable brains can go a long way to integrating with relational databases and I want to make sure I've got a clue about all this! :) thanks tone out,

How do I query one variable and place it back into another?

I am try to use one DTML Method and select a variable from a query and then place the resulting variable into the second query. Can't pull it off . . . any suggestions? Thank you, Depends on how dynamic you wanted to the site to be! :^) Seriously, if you know well the domain a relational database might be a reasonable place. Of course, since changing the schema/structure of RDBMSs is, erm, problematic you'll want to ensure you have a strong feel for data elements. OTOH, if you either (a) don't know the domain well, or (b) want to reserve the ability to change schema on the fly in reactive mode using Zope's organic object database (aka ZODB3) might be the ticket. Of course you get a lot of benefits other than dynamic schema (versions, undo, et al). The introduction of ZCatalog goes a LONG way toward making the ZODB3 a really viable storage as it adds indexing machinery to the mix. An added benefit is that the indexing machinery facilitates both free-text and structured searches. All that said, we still have customers that don't feel comfy with an "Object Database" -- fortunately (imho) Zope's relational integration is pretty dang good (esp with pluggable brains). -Rob

The ctsybase module that comes with Brian Hooper's unofficial Sybase DA does not, and this precludes the use of "large" (I don't know the magic number, but my experience is that any column data above ~4K must be accessed as long objects) column data such as images and text. I was extremely frustrated to learn of this limitation, as I had to move a working web site from MSSQL 6.5 to Sybase 11.4 on Linux, and in this process the image support more or less disappeared; long objects permanently clog the ctsybase module, requiring a restart of Zope. >And others. Brian, What happens in the case of a web cache? Assume an object is cached, and the cache's client does a GET to the cache for that object. The cache queries Zope using HEAD to determine if the object is still current. Zope returns 404, and the cache returns 404 to the client's GET . This is assuming a lot about how caches work - I haven't tested it.
