They both have database connectivity and a markup language in common. Zope has the object database, which CF does not. CF has more GUI tools. Will Zope have GUI tools? I think so. It's just a matter of time before WebDAV clients get up to speed, and the new DTML syntax is a lot more editor-friendly. (Just imagine when they add WebDAV to Dreamweaver :) Personally, if I were starting an app today I'd go with Zope. (In fact, I *was* starting an app a few months back and decided to go with Zope). I think Zope, in the long run, will amount to easier to support and extend apps. If Zope weren't around, I'd probably opt for PHP 4.0 over CF at this point, as well... I'm not trying to start an app server war, mind you. Just wanted to point out that I think Zope and CF are indeed going for the same thing in the end... Kevin

Calling ZClass DTML methods with arguments.

Dear Zopesters, First off a big thanks. I am a high energy physicist and I was able to put together a interactive FAQ page for our experiment when I needed to do a good job quickly using Zope. Everyone was quite impressed. Now I am playing with Zope 2.0 and ZClasses. There is something I can't figure out that I was hoping someone could give me a pointer on. Basically what I want to do is make a ZClass object for a directory of pictures from a photoCD where each picture has several resolutions. So ideally in my HTML code I would like to have something like this:  where pcd2082 is an instance of my zclass and link is a DTML method which presents a small version of the picture as a link to a larger version. I can't seem to do this though. After searching documentation mailing lists etc I discovered I needed to do this:  In other words I need to tell the function about its name space and mapping. I also know you can do this:     But the reason I am trying to this is I wan't something that looks very simple and straightforward and only takes one line. I don't see why when I call a method of pcd2082 I should need to tell it to use the namespace of pcd2082. Shouldn't that be the default? In c++ lingo a member function of a class knows all about its instance's public data. So stated more succinctly: Is there a way I can call a DTML method of a ZClass instance with arguments without also passing the first two namespace arguments? Cyber Cash

I hope Scott Robertson is on this list. He is the creator of the Cyber Cash interface into Zope. Hey Scott, I have some experience with Cyber Cash. My last project I coded in Python and we needed to use Cyber Cash. I have the entire portet Cyber Cash API. It is in working condition. We feel pretty bad making you guys wait so long between 1.10.x and the next release, then throwing so much new stuff into 2.0 that it took a long time to get out. I predict frequent bug fix releases and small feature changes focused on making things easier to use. Another area we might revisit quickly is jacking up performance. _Hopefully_ we'll avoid doing major stuff in the Zope release itself for at least a few months, thus giving plenty of time to bake what's there now. As for this particular thread, I personally would like to see ZClasses become well within reach of "content managers" instead of being only in the realm of developers. People say that SQL is hard to use, but right now doing a ZClass project is harder. --Paul

ZClasses have a specific way to do this I believe. Inside a ZClass you'll find a 'SubClasses' tab. If you don't select it in that tab it can't be added inside that class. question about user authentication

I'm new to Zope and having some trouble understanding the user authentication procedures. I've defined several user roles to suit my needs (author, moderator, maintainer, partner, etc,...) and want to be able to provide access to objects based on whether a user has priviledges dictated by those roles, for the specific object. My problem is that I don't want Zope to handle the authentication, rather I would like to provide a login form for users. Normally I would keep user data in and RDBMS, let the user log in, I'd grab their permissions, issue a session_id either as a cookie or part of the URL, and enter the session_id/permissions into a hashtable or some other storage so that I could check it when I needed to, and delete it when the session lapses or the user logs out. Do I need to do essentially the same thing in Zope, or is there some way that I can authenticate a user from a DTML login method and have that authentication persist (and be queryable) throughout the user's session until they log off? It's my understanding that with HTTP authentication, Zope will essentially manage the session persistence so that later on I could use the AUTHENTICATED_USER object to find out who I'm dealing with and act accordingly, but is their a way to do the authentication from DTML? I can't seem to locate such method calls in the documentation, and I don't know how Zope stores session information. Of course, I could be looking at this the wrong way. Is Zope's security setup even intended to provide ways of managing a user's session and the content they can view and manipulate, or is it mainly intended for managing access by people who will be dealing with Zope itself (this is what all of the documentation examples tend toward)? Zodb3 setup

Hello, Assuming I've installed Zope2 into c:\zope2, and Python152 into c:\python152 on a Windows98 machine, what do I have to set PYTHONPATH etc.. to in order to use Zodb3 with Python ? And...any examples/tutorials on using Zodb3 and Python ? regards, Steve
