Hi everyone, I've read many times that the -D option in z2.py causes Zope to run in debug mode. Apparently that's the default behavior. Others have said that you can edit z2.py and remove it. My problem is that I can't figure out what part of z2.py to change to start Zope in "non-debug mode." Z SQL question..

Hello, I have huge problem here, mainly because of my lack of knowledge and understanding of Z SQL methods, I really need some help, and I am hopeing some one would be willing to give me some light on the following issue: I have succeded in creating a dtml form and sql method base on the marvelous how-to recently posted on the subject, but I have different needs, I have created a Mysql database that serves to generate users accounts, and collects many info from them, the problem here is that I made the database with two indexes one with the auto-increment feature (no problem here) and a second one the email field that I have instuct mysql should be unique too, and thus when a user gets created if the email address exists, mysql won't allow insertion of new data base on the previous rule which is exactly what I want it to do, my problem is that I need to test this condition before so that if the email exists then the user gets a message telling her/him that either she/he most choose another email address, to avoid the error screen, or edit his current record which would need a some sort of validation as being the rightfull owner of the afore mention account. I know this might be to much to as of you all, but I am really stuck I have try many approaches unseccesfully and thats why I ask of you to help me if you will... Thanks a lot in advanced... Sam

2b6/zserver/redhat linux - python process seems to be growing ?

I have a ZODB about 5.4 mb and what appears to be a normal healthy zope 2b6 except that whenever I check, the size of the python processes (as revealed by top) seems to be expanding steadily. It starts out around 7.54mB and is currently 34.5mB or so... Anyone else noticed this or is it just me ? Flushing the cache seems to make no difference. At what point should I start wondering about memory leaks ?

Barriers to Zope popularity: Part 1: wysiwig editing

Having been using Zope for the past 8months or so I see two potential reasons as to why more people at my work havn't taken to Zope. One discussed of late is WYSIWYG editing. I HATE wysiwyg editing. It invariably makes a mess. It seems that a lot of people disagree with me and find a system that allows wysiwyg editing to make the creation of good web pages simplier. Possible solution: Frontpage seems to me to be the weapon of choice for these "amateur" web authors. I imagine that frontpage will support webdav in the future but for now I think it would be possible to support a subset of the frontpage web extensions. At least the ones that deal with authoring etc. It all uses HTTP so I imagine it would be as hard to implement as webdav support was. Products could even be created for searching and web discussion extensions but I would think that this would detract from Zope and add support for frontpage more than the reverse. The next problem with this is how to edit partial pages in a wysiwyg editor. Ie how to edit a whole page when every DTML doc has <dtml-var standard_html_header> etc in. What we could do is to have a special render method that produces an html document which has all the html the real rendered page does as well as the DTML cunningly encoded in it. Then a special update method can take this an process the changes to the parts of the document as neccesary. For instance  <h2></h2> <p> This is the  Document. </p>  could be rendered as  <html> <head> <body>  <h2>My Documents Title</h2> <p> This is the myDoc Document. </p>  </body>  or something similar. As long as ALL the dtml in a document can be encoded in this way and the visual editor leaves the comments alone then this will work. This leads to the question of how the update method will deal with updates to include documents/methods/properties? Not sure. It could either, give an exception (might be possible with WEC), just ignore them, or try and perform the updates on the other objects (potentially messy but possible in limited cases???). Thoughts?

Making a Database Connection to MySQL

Hello, I'm looking at switching from using PHP to Zope for an intranet application. The problem is I can't find how to add another database (in this case a MySQL DB). Basically I've installed Zope 2.0.1 and everything is working, now what do I have to connect to MySQL. Thanks for the help, --James

Having been using Zope for the past 8months or so I see two potential reasons as to why more people at my work havn't taken to Zope. Barrier 1: WYSIWYG editing (see previous mail) Barrier 2: Source Control. Initially I was concerned about the whole ODB thing. Now I trust it to some extent however source control is more than just backup or versioning. Its about tracablity in a development process. I work with a software development group and all our code is under source control and any work done can be traced to a person and a time. Zope can't do this. Any file based web server allows this (however then you don't get the distributed editing etc). Possible solution: Allow some sort of hooks into the versioning mechanism. What would be nice is in the case of a save or undo of a version, those changes could be mirrored in source control. How? - Some sort of export on changes. This goes into a designated dir that represents the site. A script then gets run that does the equivilent commit into the soruce control program. Different adapters with different scripts for CVS, ClearCase etc. - Have somesort of folder/XML format? Instead of just one big XML file like export gives you then maybe a folder heirachy with special files to represent the properties of Zope folders. This would allow for much better diffs in the source control prog. - Allow imports from such a format when you need to reverse changes or do something funny from source control. - I think only restricting this to versions is ok because non versioned changes might pickup all the changes that occur with user data, counters etc. And with a policy that all changes have to be through a version (is this enforcable in zope???) then all is well. All the "user" data changes such counters etc could be accounted for in source control by doing a periodic whole site export and having this committed to the source control system thus ensuring that whats in source control is a reasonably accurate representation of the site. I know there are many more barriers but these are two I've been thinking a lot about and I think are quite important.
