I've just installed pythonmethods and have to take my hat off to Evan Simpson and anyone else involved in the develop- -ment of pythonmethods ! The past 2 weeks, since looking at Zope again, I've been saddened to find that I've stopped thinking about the "problem space" and more about just trying to grok code and make simple stuff work ... the lack of accurate/complete documentation aside, I think the main reason for this is that DTML just looks so damned unreadable compared to python. (I've seen some posts on this list that gave me Perl flashbacks - which wasn't a pretty sight <g>). My productivity has really dropped the past fortnight as a result. So, I'm hoping Python methods can get me back to writing Python ! In fact, this sort of functionality was what I expected and hoped for when I first looked at zope (external methods don't quite cut it because they live on the filesystem and can get 'lost' or separated).. totally essential, especially with the recently posted code to import any python classes. wicked. coding is fun again. On this note though, writing python means that 'tabs' are now important and so using a web-browser to write code is not possible... since the tab sends the focus to the next field. So, I'm using FTP (with Ultraedit on win32) which works great with dtml methods and dtml documents stored in folders but I can't open the following : a) pythonmethods, no matter where they are stored. why is this so ? b) zclass methods. the zclass is shown in the product listing but it's not possible to drill down to the methods. So, right now, I've got a tab in my clipboard and am CTRL+V'ing it when editing pythonmethods via the web browser. This is a bit low tech to say the least ;) Somebody want to put me out of my agony please ? cheers, chas

design tools for Zope.

Not sure if this belongs on Zope or Zope-Dev (or even the ZDP list) but what sort of design tools are people using when they're designing Zope-based applications? Normal OO type things work fine for normal ZClass type things, but it tends to break down for me once I start trying to factor in acquisition... Does anyone have any nice tips they'd like to share? Tabs are evil :-) As for Python methods becoming part of Zope proper, the big thing is that Evan uses a TOTALLY different security model than we do for protecting the user (he munges in the byte code machinery, where as we do parse tree manipulation). This is prohibitive as I (as security Tzar) am not going to want to have two models floating around :/ This is unfortunate, but it's a proof of concept and will definatly flesh out some of the requirements. Think of it as the beginning of the inception phase of a project. zsql methods in zclasses give authentication errors

Is there any reason why ZSQL methods which work fine within folders do not work within Zclasses ? Instead they seem to give authentication errors. eg. /Products /Myproduct /MyClass /Methods /index_html /dtml_method /sql_method The ZSQL method works correctly when I try "test" - which means that the DB connection and SQL are correct. The DTML method ('dtml_method') calls 'sql_method' and parses the output. However, if I create an instance of this product and then try to access dtml_method using http://Zope/Instance_of_Myproduct/dtml_method I get a "authentication failure" and a pop-up asks me to log in again; however, not even Zope superuser can log in ! Before, I had these very same methods in a folder : /Folder /dtml_method /sql_method and it worked perfectly. I've enabled *every* permission in the zclass to allow full access but still this authentication error. Has anybody else encountered this ? Apologies for yet another post/question but : a) I've looked/searched the archive and tried almost everything. b) After previous experience with zclass, I don't want to waste too much time if it's actually a problem with zclasses. Postscript: I actually ended up just putting the smbUserFolder into the root and assigning local roles to users yanked from this userfolder in each subfolder. Its not as kludgey as I thought it would be. Pretty nice, actually. I may later rework it so I don't have to emulate the group memberships of the NT domain using local roles (it's one more thing to manage, and I'm lazy, eventually I'll come up with something Rube Goldberg-ish to automatically assign roles based on fields in the smbUsers file). But--as they say in Washington--for now this works. pps - the <sniiiip> cracked me up... This was because I was reloading the page and it was re-inserting the element. I sat here editing code, reloading, and on and on for like 4 hours. Hello again. I changed self.fields to be a PersistentMapping() rather than a dictionary. They do this very thing. There are options to store the rendered non-SQL object to a filesystem. If you've been to a Vignette-powered site. Notice if the first character in the object is a 1 or a 0. '0' means it was dynamically generated when you visited, a '1' means it was served from their cache. Certainly, getting some of this kind of stuff into Zope would have a tremendous impact on scalability. Patches accepted :^) Regards, --Rob
