Re. combining Zope sites

There are a couple of "Gotchas", that I've run into, as far as Export / Import. It's very easy to Export a "Top" level folder, as long as it's not "THE" Top Level Folder. What I mean is that when you Export a folder, all it's contents, including properties, subfolders, etc. are automagically included, and that's about as painless as it can get. BUT, there's no way to "Export" THE Top Level "Zope" folder. So, if you need to move anything that's contained in the "Zope" folder itself, you will likely need to create a new "Temporary Folder", as a sub-folder of the main folder which you plan to Export. Then, copy the contents of the "Zope" folder into the Temporary folder. When you Import, you can copy* and paste again, into the Zope folder of the new location, and you're back in business. Actually, a certified Zope Guru told me later that I really could have "published" even the TOP level Zope folder, by calling ZPublisher from a Python command, but I had already copied and pasted everything by then . . . Of course, it's best to know this ahead of time, since it can seriously impact your Folder Hierarchy / Design! Another thing that induced about 1/2 day of panic once, was an error that caused the Import to fail. I have no clue what the error was (some reference to a math function . . .), or why it occured, but by selecting "Export as XML", and likewise at the Import step, the error "disappeared". It's worth a try, it worked for me. Good Luck! Jerry S. * Unfortunately, Properties will have to be re-entered manually, or I guess you could create a method to copy their names and contents into a different object type, and reverse the process to rebuild them in their new home. And using '&' so unix can go further with loading all other modules? Can these give security risks? Is there another way? It also looks that 'su nobody' isn't even neseccary. Why? I want to use Zope with Apache, so I gave permission to nobody to start/stop Zope. How comes that I don't have to use 'su nobodoy'? Regards, Tom.

Am I right in assuming that: <dtml-tree> <dtml-var id> </dtml-tree> will only display the folders in the current directory? Is this because only Folder objects have a tpValues method (which branches defaults to...)? Shouldn't other stanard objects like DTML docs & methods, etc, provide this method? ;-) cheers, Chris

newbie project: building a memepool-like application

I have been experimenting with Zope since about 4 months ago, and one of the most interesting things about it is how it changes the usual development of web applications to a more standard and inteligent way. The object-oriented approach of Zope make it very interesting. A couple of weeks ago, while reading one of my favourite weblogs, memepool (www.memepool.com) I notice a very "Zopish" structure of its URLs: www.memepool.com/Author/peterb or www.memepool.com/Subject/Travel So I went and asked the memepool site administrator what was running under the hood, and he replied literally: "a scary pile of perl, mostly" I thought that building a memepool-like web application with Zope would be a good way to learn. So I grabbed the Zclasses tutorial and started to build a meme Zclass, but like good newbies do, run into some problems that I could not solve alone. Stuff like: "How do I make Zope automatically store and number instances of the meme ZClass that I just defined?" Now I have taken this project with a different approach: I will try to build the memepool application completely from the ground up and following an OOAD (Object Oriented Analysis and Design) methodology. The final goal of this project is to have a completely functional memepool-like application, product or whatever, built completely from scratch, using Zope. But I expect many bumps in the road ahead. The problem is that although I know a bit of OOAD, and have programmed a lot in other languages like perl, I am a newbie in two of the main areas involved: Zope and Python. I know though, that the Zope community will help me as I go along, specially the people in this list. I will keep an account of the progress of the project at the webpage mentioned below. rewrite how to create a configuration interface?

Zope & Mandrake

Hi all, Just want to say that Zope installing on Mandrake 7.0 is no problem at all. Everything works like it should. Even with the how-to of Miklos Nemeth it's like a charm to install it with Apache. Regards, Tom.

ZSQL testing for empty return from select

Hi all I've got a problem with a ZSQL method which looks like; select max(<dtml-var key_field>) as keyval from <dtml-var table_name> This works perfectly as long as there is at least one record in the table, but seems to just hang if the table is empty. I'm trying to use this method from an external method as follows; res = self.qryMaxKey(table_name='events', key_field='eventid') # Test for empty return here return res[0][0] so I've tried tests like; if not res: return 0 if res == []: return 0 if res == None: return 0 but none of these seem to work. All ideas gratefully receved! TIA David
