ZClass Inheritance

My question concerns the arrangement of ZClasses derived from other ZClasses I've defined. <pre> If I have: product ZMyProduct class ZMyClass defined in ZMyProduct class ZMyChildClass based on ZMyClass, also in ZMyProduct class ZMyGrandChildClass bases on ZMyChildClass, also in ZMyProduct I end up with one product, ZMyProduct, with three ZClasses defined in it. Is this the correct way to this kind of thing? Is there a way to prevent the product from getting cluttered with ZClass definitions? </pre> Thanks. -- bob

sql method attributes

Hello, I read some place that a ZSQL method can get attributes from two places: variables and through HTTP. If I use something like method?argv=argv it works fine. But I also have argv defined as a property. For some reason the method doesn't recognise this. Is my understanding of how ZSQL methods are supposed to work flawed? In other words how can I pass an argument to a ZSQL method without having to include it in a URL or a form. Thanks, -Joseph Kocherhans

Need some help wrt URLs and methods...

Hi all, I have a (very heavily used) system that allows downloads of many different file types from a filesystem (ie located outside the Zope system) to people. The URLs are somwthing like http://blah/blee/get_file?filenumber=213 get_file is an external python method that does all the good stuff of database lookup and logging off downloads. The system gets the file from the unix filesystem and does some machinations with headers such as contennt-type and content-disposition to *try* and get the browsers to behave themselves. What I'd like to do is have something like http://blah/blee/get_file/results.rtf which helps to make the browser download the file correctly. The problem is that the Zope system says that the URL doesn't exist. Is there any way around this (I know that ZSQL methods manage it with traversal, but I can't figure out how to do it with this setup I have). Any thoughts gratefully received! :) Tone

user Nobody?

Did I just read somewhere that beginning with a recent Zope release that the server no longer runs as user Nobody (for security reasons)? I've read so much stuff on Zope in the last week that I don't remember where I saw that or what it now runs as. Assuming someone gives me that name (please?) does that mean that the install HOWTO is already out-of-date (last modified 1/17/2000) and I need to substitute the new name for everywhere the HOWTO says "user nobody"? Or do I still follow the HOWTO to the letter? I'll be using 2.1.2 on LinuxPPC (Python 1.52). Many thanks! Darren Addy University of Nebraska at Kearney

I don't know what the status on 8i compatability is, have you tried it? It might just work. Note that Oracle's client libraries change in non-backwards compatable ways quite often. You many need to make minor adjustments to the code. My custom scripts for starting/stopping multiple Zope instances

All, There have been some questions on here recently on how to start and stop Zope. The system I've created may not be the fanciest, but it works for me. It all begins with the standard SysV script in /etc/rc.d/init.d, which calls zstart and zstop as appropriate. This is fairly standard, and I won't bore you with the contents of my script here. zstart and zstop both read configuration files in /etc/zope.d/*, which currently contains two files: env and instances. The env file is sourced to redefine defaults that are set in zstart and zstop. The instances file describes how to start z2.py. I run ZServer on Red Hat 6.0 from behind Apache. Nice people use Unicode, but there are very few of them out there. :) Most people use BIG5 for the traditional characters, and GB (Guo Biao) for simplified characters. GB and BIG5 are two-byte encoded. You can tell from the first byte whether it's 7-bit ASCII character or a Chinese character. So, you can mix 7-bit ASCII characters and Chinese characters together without problem. There used to be a good website at www.ifcss.org, but always as things with the Chinese, people get political and fight between themselves, and sue each other in American courts. :) And voila, the website is gone. :) And now I am left in a limbo. You can probably find information just as fast as I do. Koreans are a lot luckier, as long as you don't use Hanja. :) Fact is, Korean is actually an alphabetized language. Typing Korean on computers is actually faster than typing Vietnamese. And Americans are eating up the rest of the world alive. Even the French are scratching their heads on what to do with http addresses... no one dares to use accented characters for their URL. Voila, so much for the defense of the French languages. It took internet to knock down the pride of the French. :) --------------------------- In short, I don't have a clue. :) Even after trying for a while on the web. PIL

I know that this isn't exactly a Zope question, but it is pyhton and I am using it in Zope :) I downloaded and installed the Python Image Library (PIL). How can I get the Python interpreter to find the PIL modules. In pyhton if I enter: >> import Image I get ImportError: No module named Image If I put Image.py into a directory that python currently knows about it finds it. The question then is how do I get the interpreter to know about the new PIL directory, I don't want to move all the files to an existing directory??? Thanks, DR

Zope/SuSE 6.x How-To v0.1 ready for review

Maybe one of the Zope Gods can point out if this is a Bad Thing. At 8IPC, the Digital Creations folks said that ZODB is pretty much bullet proof so it might not be a problem. The only problem I can see with the way I call start is that if it fails, I don't know about it at boot. My script simply forks the zope start script and that will always return success.
