newbie - create and call methods ?

Hello all, I've been looking in the available zope documentation, listening to this list, looking in the archive of this list (BTW : are you planning to add a keyword search ?)... That is to say that I'm used to searching for the info about open source OS and applications, but I have to admit I'am almost discouraged using Zope as the doc is really scarse compared with what is usually found. So, sorry, I post my newbie questions : I would like to create a method to generate a link (href) with a leading image and text formatting, and so on. I'd like the method to have two arguments : the name of the link and the URL. How do I create a method with arguments ? How do I call a methods with arguments ? Do I mistake attributes (for docs but not for methods) and arguments ? If you have pointers to documents I haven't found that... tpc_begin

Hi there, Firstly, I'm not a member of this mailing list, although I have an archive of over 2000 messages from it. Could anyone replying to my message please reply to tim_haines(a)hotmail.com as well as the list? Thanks. I've been developing a site using nt4, Access, and the odbc plugin. Things work great - most of the time. I've noticed that occaisionally I get any error message that mentions tpc_begin. When I do a refresh, the problem is gone, and the site works fine again. I've also noticed that this normally occurs the first time a database query is executed after a reboot. Does anyone know why this would happen, or have any insights at all? I look forward to hearing from you. Tim.

Randomizing SQL Data ?

I have some data returned by a SQL Method that I want to randomly pick from. Since I cannot get the SQL Statement to return random data sets I was going to use the "_.whrandom.choice" to go over the SQL list and create a new list of the randomized choices. This will go over the SQL Content <dtml-in sqlMethod size=10 start=query_start> </dtml-in> But how do I create a list? (in Python I would just say list = () and a list.append() TIA, JMA

fastcgi module

A Suitable RDBMS?

Hi, I saw a posting today that MySQL was not recommended as an RDBMS for use with Zope. I'd like to use and external database for storing customers' price lists and product galleries; what (preferably free :) database would people recommend? What are the pros and cons of each? UserDB, IE5, @Home Problem

I am having trouble with userDB cookie authentication in IE 5 through the @Home network. Apparently @Home uses a proxy server for all of their traffic. When accessing the docLogin page for authentication the user receives a "Cannot Display This Page" error from IE 5. Turning off cookie-based authentication seems to solve the problem. This problem does not occur in Netscape under the same conditions and does not occur in IE 5 when used outside of the @Home proxy. Does anyone know of specific problems with IE 5 and proxy servers? Is there any solution outside of using standard authentication?

simple iteration question

Creating sequences

I know that you can use the dtml-in tag to iterate over a sequence, but I want to know how to create a sequence? If, for example, in Python I had: foo = [1,2,3] What would I have to do to get a sequence like that accessible from Zope? My experience with SyBase is that the adapter development is kind of slow, and only Linux platform is supported. And currently it has some glitches with some data types (decimal with 10 or more digits), it does not support stored procedures, and the implementation in Zope 2.1.4 crashes when you have date fields ending between 59 and 60 seconds (e.g: 59.23 sec). Also, when there is database problem, the adapter very often just hangs and lock the database out, requiring a Zope reboot. So, SyBase in Zope is not really in great shape. I don't know about other databases, maybe other database adapters have problems, too. SyBase adapter is workable for me (after I patched the problem areas), just not that great in its current shape. It has transaction, though, which you definitely want. Does anyone know what the issues with this are? >From memory I think the non-thread-safeness of the odbc drivers themselves was not the only problem. I suspect the python odbc interface might have been not thread safe also. Can anyone confirm this?
