Zope [Funny Longs]

I was wondering if you have any knowledge of Zope returning longs instead of integers on for example: <dtml-in "some_MySQL_ZSQL_Thing()"> <dtml-var id> </dtml-in> Which will produce something like 1L 2L 3L instead of 1 2 3 This happens using exactly the same ZMySQL adapter on different locations, the location "out of order" is running GNU/Debian 2.2 Frozen (i386) with Zope 2.1.4 on top, and the "right one" is running RedHat 6.0 (i386) with Zope 2.1.4 on top. Some feedback: I've installed Zope 2.1.6 from source on the same machine, with as close to an identical setup as is possible on a live server. Even after really hammering 2.1.6, though, I've been unable to produce the same hanging behaviour observed in 2.1.3. The only differences, apart from the apache rewrite rules, are that the 2.1.6 install is using GenericUserFolder 1.2.2 (vs. 1.1.0) and SiteAccess 1.0.1 (vs. 1.0.0). I doubt that these products are the cause of the problem. It's also pretty unlikely that this is an OS threads problem, at least on our platform. We're running Zope on FreeBSD with pthreads; this is a different thread implementation to that used on Linux. If this is happening on Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris, the my hunch (dare I voice it?) is that this hanging occurs somewhere deep in the bowels of ZServer. Zope has in the past been fairly stable using four threads; it was only when the threads were increased to 20 that it began hanging repeatedly. We really *do* need to run Zope with a modest number of threads, as some database queries can be expected to take a couple of seconds to complete. I really do want to get the the root of this problem; if anyone out there has some suggestions or further information requirements, I'm listening! Briefly, since increasing the NUMBER_OF_THREADS that Zope uses from the default (4) to 20, Zope has been hanging randomly. A request will be sent off to Zope (whether through apache with mod_pcgi, or directly through ZServer), but the request is never served up, and Z2.log shows no record of it. No additional CPU is taken by the python process. Environment: Zope 2.1.3 (source release) python 1.5.2 GCC 2.7.2.3 FreeBSD 3.3-RELEASE The problem was reproducible on pages with framesets, where some of the frame documents are loaded, and one is omitted. It occurs when viewing the management interface, for example (manage_main is displayed, but manage_workspace is not). It seems that only one thread hangs, since other requests continue to be served. Not only frameset pages were affected, though only on frameset pages did the hanging consistently occur. This behaviour was exhibited under minimal load (one or two users), and ceased when I reverted to 4 threads and restarted Zope. Our development machine, running 2.1.4 source, had no such problems when running Zope with 20 threads. I don't recall any drastic changes or checkins between 2.1.3 and 2.1.4, though... (that was basically the /REQUEST traversal security fix) I'll be installing Zope 2.1.6, and try to approximate the the same conditions, but since this is a live machine, it's going to be tricky to find a window of time to perform the switch-over... Anyone out there with some ideas as to the root cause of these hangings, or with similar tales to tell? TIA, -- Marcus

Running it with gadfly would be only something you'd do in a very low usage environment. As far as the performance thing goes - the current code loads entries out of the table as it needs them. I have nearly finished the work necessary to make it load the whole Session data at the start - this should make a large difference to performance. Note also, tho, that you _really_ need to be aggressive about pruning old sessions, and old session data. In our production system, we make sure any module that uses session data for it's own purposes also cleans out the session data once it's finished. The ongoing memory usage growth is a concern, we're seeing it as well - I'm not _certain_ it's related to SQLSession (I still have my suspicions about SybaseDA) but it's pretty close to the top of my todo list to fix). string or list?

Greetings, I'm having a small problem (duh! :) In my page, a person might select a number of items from a list. The list is generated from an SQL query, and has unique IDs for each row. Fine. Simple, right? Sure... And each row has a radiobutton input called 'done'. When the user hits submit, if they've pressed any of the radiobuttons i will get either a 'done' string (one selected) or a 'done' list (multiple selected). Problem is.. how do i tell which? Is it possible with DTML, as i try to avoid using external methods for something so trivial. -- Have a better one, Curtis. <dtml-var standard_work_disclaimer>

Site map question

Hi there, I'm using the simple site map script ( http://www.zope.org/Members/djay/SimpleSiteMap ) It works ok ONLY AFTER i authenticate myself as manager. SQLSession and Performance

Not long ago someone (Timothy Grant) posted a message regarding performance with SQLSession. Now I am running into the same problem. I really don't know whether SQLSession is the problem or not. I just know that Zope keeps bloating up in memory usage. It boots up with 7 MB, and now it's reaching 38 MB each thread. When I clean the session tables of SQLSession, performance improves. content entry product?

All, I am looking to build some content entry screens in Zope that would allow non technical users to easily upload content to a db. Is there a Zope product that helps automate creating these types of screens? If not, maybe I'll build one but I wanted to see if anyone else was working on this sort of thing... -Garrett

Capturing a variable inside a Z SQL Method

Can I assign a variable to a cell returned in a SQL Method? Say my method looks like this.... ...  var = select [...]  ... then use var... So I want to assign a variable to the value of a query. The query should return one value... How do I make that assignment? Thanks -- Ken Kinder 303.381.7631
