Windows definitely provides the right default behaviour here; in most cases reading a file while someone else is writing to it is a great way to read garbage. Its annoying for the minority of cases where it does make sense (such as data.fs) that the Unix-like behaviour (ie, unsafe ;-) isn't available to Python. DTML question

Hello, I want to retrieve the last 3 filenames from a subfolder and display them in a document. If I set the size of the retrieval to 1, I get just 1 name returned. If I set the size to 3, I get everything in the folder. I dont have one off hand, I usually use the built in browser based editor. hrm. I'll setup one up over the weekend (I've done it in the past for asp and such, so its old hat for me) Does anyone know of a good (free!) java applet based text editor? Something with basic color tagging abilities and maybe even (gasp) a spell checker, search/replace, etc? If there is one, we could mod it to spit its output as a form post, and hus have a great built-in editor for most browsers... Also, its not XML compliant either, but I have a shorter dtml syntax patch available for download at: http://www.zope.org/Members/Coventry/dtml_shortcut it is a really small patch, and just allows <: to replace <dtml- or <!--# inside your documents, such as in the snippet below: <:var foo> <:if expr="la=lala"> So you think la and lala are the same!? <:else> Ah, so you see a diffrence! </:if> it just leads to less typing. Comming from the asp/php world (as of late, I also do C and Perl<G>), I got used to typing a lot less characters to switch from markup to scripting, and so figured I'd dive in and make this change... tree problem, addendum

Sorry, but I have more elements: in the edit tab of the management view of any one of my Articles the Id does not come out at all. problem testing permissions

Hi, I've created a folder in which there's a dtml method index_html which displays a calendar of events found in the ZCatalog. In this folder I've created several folders, one for each event type (e.g. courses, exams, etc...) each subfolder acquire the index_html method when it is displayed. In each subfolder I've created a user folder and created an user who has a manager role (I've also given the user a local role of manager for the subfolder, but I don't now if it is useful or not): this person should be able to add whatever she wants, especially events, in her folder, but nowhere else. here's the tree: Events |-- index_html |-- Courses | |-- acl_users | | |-- jerome (can add events in Courses only) | |-- event 1 | |-- event 2 | |-- ... | |-- event n |-- Exams |-- acl_users | |-- fred (can add events in Exams only) |-- event 1 |-- ... |-- event n If I log in as superuser (Zope 2.1.6 with patches) then no problem, I can add events wherever I want. Authentication question.

hi folks, we are building an application that needs more information for users than that which is made available via the acl_users db (which can only contain username, password, domains, and roles). specifically, we have created an RDBS database which tracks users via a numeric user id (and speeds lookups), all tables are related via this integer variable. we are having difficulty, though, in that, zope continues to want to build a new user entry only via acl_users. has anyone done something that will allow us to get around this. i have been searching all the various search engines and zope list archives looking for something along these lines, and i find a lot of stuff on how zope authentication "out of the box" works though nothing on how to get the authentication to work via another means. i suspect it might require some editing of the base python code, but i am hoping that this can be done from within the Products directory and not in the preconpiled code. any insights would be greatly appreciated. thanks. ciao! greg. I'm trying to deny external access to zope maintainance from elsewhere (just for sure), with Zope behind apache. However, It just doesn't seem work... Chris Thanks for your reply. I hadn't thought of using ZWikiWeb, but given that I do need to make instances of a master site, do you think that this could be done using ZWikiWeb? Instead of inheritance for the folders, the mechanism I'm investigating now is prototypes (a la JavaScript and Self objects). Adding users via external method

Hi all, I'm working on a project where it would be very nice to add all the original users via a script. I'm working with an external method that should--I believe use manage_user() to add the users. My confusion comes from where does the external method go in the hierarchy? >From my reading it appears that to act on a folder, you need to be operating within that folder (e.g., I can add folders and stuff to my current folder all day). I haven't yet figured out how to operate on the acl-users folder that is the child of my current folder. As always, thanks for any assistance that you can provide. -- Stand Fast, tjg. the tree tag is driving this newbie up the wall

Hello, I am trying to write a tree access to a hyerarchy of folders containing custom objects, subclassed from the DTML Docuement. The inheritance path should be DTMLDocument -> Article (my custom class) -> every single article in the folders. I would like only Articles and folders to appear in the tree, so this is what I do: <dtml-tree branches_expr="objectValues(['Folder','Article'])"> <dtml-if "meta_type=='Folder'"> <dtml-var title_or_id> <dtml-else> <A HREF="<dtml-var tree-item-url>"><dtml-var title_or_id></A> </dtml-if> </dtml-tree> The tree *looks* all right, and the folders expand and contract ok. But the URLs in the HREF are mangled. For example, I have a folder called abracadabra, that contains another folder named curiosidades, that contains an article whose title is "las origines del ajedrez", and that has in id of "ajedrez". The link comes out like this: <A HREF="abracadabra/curiosidades/<string>">las origines del ajedrez</A> I hope this does not play hell with the guys that use HTML-aware mail clients, but what happens is that instead the URL instead of being bracadabra/curiosidades/ajedrez gets the last component of the path substituted with 'string' between angle brackets. If I modify the dtml-tree tag so that it takes in also DTML Documents, *those* URLs work. So what is happening ? Shouldn't the id propery be inherited from my Article class ?
