ZClass strangeness: broken basic management actions

I'm almost at my wit's end (again). I have several very simple ZClasses (*none* of which are subclassed from CatalogAware). The "Basic" tab shows them all to be subclassed from "ZObject, ZObjectManager". Recently I posted asking how to implement copy/paste programatically. It turns out this was somewhat premature - I can't even get this to work via the management interface, all of my ZClass instances reporting that "object X doesn't support this operation". One of my ZClasses doesn't even allow renaming, throwing the same error as above. In all other respects the classes work as expected. This is happening on a number of Zope platforms (irix, NT, Win98) with versions of Zope everywhere from 1.61 to 2.2 which leads me to believe that I'm doing something fundamentally wrong. Any ideas are much appreciated - I'll even send along an exported ZClass to anyone willing to investigate the source of my error on their local machine. Cheers, Darran.

Depends on what sort of periodicity your application needs -- and therein lies the problem. There are so many different needs that a built-in general purpose interface for specifying periodicity is likely to be at least as complex and hard to explain as a programmable interface. Take the Unix command 'cron' for example. I've included its man page below. Is that easy to understand? No way! Now imagine writing the Python/DTML code to build a nifty point and click interface to it. Not this boy! Now, if you or someone else wants to take on the challenge of building a cron-compatible rescheduler interface, be my guest. I've done my part. You can subclass Xron DTML Method. Sure, it would be possible to create a simple property that selects Weekly, Hourly, or OneTime. ...with maybe a corresponding check-box in the management interface. As soon as I published a simple system like this, the requests would start coming for more and more capabilites, and the interface would grow without control. For example, suppose you want to add Monthly to that list. Now you have to answer the questions "What kind of month -- calendar or accounting? ... which accounting system?" So, if I were going to create this kind of interface, I'd do it in a subclass, anyway, so as not to clutter up the base Xron product with something that is likely to change frequently. So how about this: I invite other developers to create rescheduler sub-products for Xron. If you create a rescheduler product, let me know about it, and I'll link to it from the Xron product page. Your product could be a Python product or a ZClass product. There's probably room for something like "Simple Rescheduler for Xron", which would do Weekly, Hourly, and OneTime; and "Cron for Xron" which would be a full cron-like interface; and maybe a product of intermediate complexity. The "Simple Rescheduler" would make a good first-time ZClass project. The developer would need to know how to write a ZClass, how to handle PropertySheets in a ZClass, and how to use DateTime. Does this sound like a good plan or a bad one? Any takers? -- Loren ========= man cron ========= The format of a cron command is very much the V7 standard, with a number of upward-compatible extensions. Each line has five time and date fields, followed by a user name (with optional ``:<group>'' and ``/<lo- gin-class>'' suffixes) if this is the system crontab file, followed by a command. Commands are executed by cron(8) when the minute, hour, and month of year fields match the current time, and when at least one of the two day fields (day of month, or day of week) match the current time (see ``Note'' below). cron(8) examines cron entries once every minute. The time and date fields are: field allowed values ----- -------------- minute 0-59 hour 0-23 day of month 1-31 month 1-12 (or names, see below) day of week 0-7 (0 or 7 is Sun, or use names) A field may be an asterisk (*), which always stands for ``first-last''. Ranges of numbers are allowed. Ranges are two numbers separated with a hyphen. The specified range is inclusive. For example, 8-11 for an ``hours'' entry specifies execution at hours 8, 9, 10 and 11. Lists are allowed. A list is a set of numbers (or ranges) separated by commas. Examples: ``1,2,5,9'', ``0-4,8-12''. Step values can be used in conjunction with ranges. Following a range with ``/<number>'' specifies skips of the number's value through the range. For example, ``0-23/2'' can be used in the hours field to specify command execution every other hour (the alternative in the V7 standard is ``0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22''). Steps are also permitted after an asterisk, so if you want to say ``every two hours'', just use ``*/2''. Names can also be used for the ``month'' and ``day of week'' fields. Use the first three letters of the particular day or month (case doesn't mat- ter). Ranges or lists of names are not allowed. The ``sixth'' field (the rest of the line) specifies the command to be run. The entire command portion of the line, up to a newline or % char- acter, will be executed by /bin/sh or by the shell specified in the SHELL variable of the cronfile. Percent-signs (%) in the command, unless es- caped with backslash (\), will be changed into newline characters, and all data after the first % will be sent to the command as standard input. Note: The day of a command's execution can be specified by two fields -- day of month, and day of week. If both fields are restricted (ie, aren't *), the command will be run when either field matches the current time. For example, ``30 4 1,15 * 5'' would cause a command to be run at 4:30 am on the 1st and 15th of each month, plus every Friday. BSD and ATT seem to disagree about this. Lists and ranges are allowed to co-exist in the same field. "1-3,7-9" would be rejected by ATT or BSD cron -- they want to see "1-3" or "7,8,9" ONLY. Ranges can include "steps", so "1-9/2" is the same as "1,3,5,7,9". Names of months or days of the week can be specified by name. Environment variables can be set in the crontab. In BSD or ATT, the en- vironment handed to child processes is basically the one from /etc/rc. Command output is mailed to the crontab owner (BSD can't do this), can be mailed to a person other than the crontab owner (SysV can't do this), or the feature can be turned off and no mail will be sent at all (SysV can't do this either). It sounds like your load may not be very small. Your -t25 setting to threads does not help too much, because the number of database connections is hard-limited to 7 in the ZODB source. It might help to visit the debug section of the control_panel to get an understanding of how many threads are actually being used at any given moment. If you find that all 7 threads are being continually used simultaneously, and your box can handle more threads (e.g. it's not CPU- or RAM-bound already), we can probably figure out how to bump you up to more database connection threads per client by changing the source. This should really be a knob somewhere. There is also a profiling facility inside Control_Panel/debug that does some sort of automated performance compilation for you, though I've never had a reason to use it. When it's running, it also purportedly slows Zope down quite a bit. Or, of course, you could always throw in another ZEO client if you're getting hit too hard to handle the load. I suggest that you: 1) Monitor your Zope clients' thread usages by using their debug facilities. 2) Monitor your Zope clients' general CPU and memory usages via vmstat or top or what-have you. zope221b1 - broken zclass instances

zope220 working fine, redhat 6.2, intel hardware. Installed zope221b1 (tried installing the upgrade tar over a copy and compiling - repeated with the source tar - same results). All zclass instances broken - the zclass products are healthy looking in the Products folder and new instances added under 221b1 seem healthy - it's just all the existing ones which appear broken. Tried deleting and then importing fresh .zexp versions of the folders containing my zclass instance - the .zexp file imports fine but the contained instances are still all broken. Stopped futzing. Back to zope220 for now. Is it just me ?

Redhat 6.2 problems

I am trying to run the latest version of Zope (2.2.1 beta) on a Redhat 6.2 Linux system. When I run the ./start script it gets to the Zope Server Monitor and sits there. It never returns back to the bash prompt. I can get to Zope's management interface from a browser so Zope *is* running. However if I close that terminal window, Zope stops. Python 1.5.2_13 is the version installed by Redhat. Which is the correct version of Python, last I checked. Also, if I run a startup script to start Zope during the boot process, it hangs the boot process. Any suggestions? Scott Burton

Aha! Nailed it. It's the 1.131 version of OFS/Application.py cvs log entry: ---------------------------- revision 1.131 date: 2000/08/02 17:31:54; author: brian; state: Exp; lines: +71 -46 branches: 1.131.4; Merged fix for products with old-style initialization not being properly filtered by permission in the filtered add list. ---------------------------- Ok, the problem is that when it sees an initialize() method, it stops looking for other stuff. ZSQLMethods has a __methods__ thing, tho. Oops. Patch appended to make it always look for __methods__. Note that it doesn't break ZSQLMethods from working, just from being added or edited. Argh. The current Zope-2_2-branch and head of CVS is busted - you cannot add or edit SQLMethods. It appears that Products.ZSQLMethods.__init__.__methods__ doesn't get into the namespace of the product properly, as neither the add or edit screens can see SQLConnectionIDs. Blah. More to come - I'll try to figure out why it's broken, and when. Anthony

file uploading from IE browser

Hi All, I'ved followed the online How-To on implementing a simple service for parsing uploaded files via the browser. But strangely, it only works for Netscape browsers. When I test the uploading using IE, the supposed file object becomes a string object, causing all sorts of problems. How am I suppose to get the file object from IE browsers? Thanks in advance! Dave
