Forgive me, but could I/we/you try again. I've created a sql method called get_users() which has UserName as a parameter, which is the same as the zope login. I'm trying to get a list of emails (from a database) based on the contents of the acl_users folder. I'm trying to extend the notion of a user, giving them extra attributes and using a database to do it. cheers all tom

DCOracle Connection with Oracle 8.0.5

I have just installed the DCOracle package V 1.3.1b on a Linux Red Hat 6.2, to access an Oracle 8.0.5 Server with python1.6 I have run with success a few tests with the scott/tiger user tables, however: 1) In order to connect successfully I had to drop the @sid parameter: dbc=DCOracle.Connect('scott/tiger@ora8') returns with error: ORA-12154 : TNS: could not resolve service name 2) I would like to connect to a remote oracle server. In this case the @sid parameter is essential. How could this problem be fixed? Is it a simple parsing problem in the oci_8.c Logon routine? which is the correct string to pe passed? @myserver.ic.unicamp.br:ora8 did not work either! zope 2.2.1 and python 1.6

Correct me if I'm wrong (and don't bother with the discussion on the merits or non- of the GPL, I don't care in this context), but: In order to link/incorporate a GPL'd module, you have to be able to distribute the entire work under the GPL. RMS says that the ZPL isn't compatible with the GPL; either you can't get something via rights given by the ZPL, then distribute it under the more restrictive rights of the GPL (the copyleft virus). Or vice versa. Therefore, assuming RMS is correct, GPL'd components can't be distributed as part of a Zope solution. You can link & use them, or distribute one and provide a pointer to the other for the other party to install, just not distribute them together to anyone else. Is this correct? If it is, the GPL isn't very appropriate for the license of a Zope product, becuase it's a packaging nightmare. -- Karl Anderson karl(a)digicool.com

[Danny William Adair] | Now Nils and Oleg are giving me the creeps. There are several issues here. First, it is not obvious that including one GPL'ed product in a zope site and then distributing that site obliges you to distribute any further source code. Only if you (embrace and) extend that specific product would the GPL hit you. Second, even if it does, remember that a zope site almost always includes source anyway. I guess the exception would be if you have binary-only python files or linked pre-compiled c-code or something like that. But it would be very hard to claim that those parts were 'infected' by a product on your site being GPL'ed. Third, you are only obligated to distribute source to parties you have already distributed the binary version to. I can't really see a customer buying a zope site from you and not expecting 'source' anyway. -Magnus (I'm not a lawyer)

I simply cannot imagine what may go wrong in your installation. The same is probably true for the other list readers, too. The only thing, that is relevant for the first access to "manage" is the file "access". Thus, there may be a problem in this file (or Zope uses a file "access" different from that you expect). What I can offer you: send me your access file (together with name/password, of cause -- you may recreate "access" with new name/password such that I do not get secrets from you). I can try it in my installation. Maybe, I am able to see what goes wrong. Dieter PS: Your mail address is really strange (at least as I see it through the digest). We use this DCOracle version under Solaris 2.7 with Oracle 8.1.6 without problem. Especially, the "@host" works. Thus, it does not look like a DCOracle problem. Dieter
