Hello, We are using DB2 on an As400 and are looking how we can use Zope in front of it. DB2 offers row security: you can only see the records you are allowed to see, based on your username and password. I can connect to DB2 with the ZODBDA. With this adapter you have to give a username password and after that all users are able to 'SQL' the database, but with a common username password, not their own. Now my question: is it possible to use a databaseadapter in a personal way? It is not that i don't trust Zope's security mechanism, but i have the idea that row security offers just a little more. Newbie zope site architecture question

Greetings, I am building an extranet for customers using Zope. Being new to Zope, I'm still trying to figure out the best way to organize this. Here are the basic requirements: 1) All content is private - every customer must have a username and password. 2) After login, the customer is taken to their section. The basic format and design of each customer's section is the same. For the purposes of this email, let's assume that each customer has the following sections: a) projects - a place where I can post information (html pages, Word documents, Excel documents, ...) pertaining to each project that I am working on for the customer. A customer may have multiple projects going on, each of which has a set of documents associated with it. b) schedule - a place where I can post a schedule for the customer c) documents - a place where the customer and I can both post documents 3) Adding new sections, for example, 'news', should not cause any problems with old customers. For example, if I have thirty existing customers that each have the three sections listed above, and then I decide that I want to add a 'news' section, I should not have to add thirty zope folders to accomodate the existing customers (or there should be an easy way of doing this.) 4) Adding new customers should be easy 5) Customers have view access to everything in their section, and write access to certain parts. 6) There will be some generic sections (for example, Annoucements) where the information is the same for all clients. I have a good idea of how I would build this using other technologies (e.g., jsp and mySQL), but am not sure how to organize it using Zope. Should I create folders for each customer, folders for each section, or both? Should I put the actual data for each customer into a relational database and retrieve it from there? I've read the Zope Book and am confident that I can figure out a good way of accomplishing all of this, but I would like to benefit from other's experience, if possible. Any help would be much appreciated. Steve

The idea is that you would have one RAMcache on your site to cache your calculated thumbnails. Architecturally, that's usually what you'd want. The part I dont' know is, how could you get any newly created image to connect to this RAMCache automatically? Right now, it seems to work if you create the image and the RAMcache and associate it manually via the ZMI, but what a pain! You can see in the source that index_html generates the cacheable http headers, which will activate downstream caches.... it might even help a downstream Squid -- if anyone knows for sure, or has suggestions in that area, let me know! System DateTime issue - redux

This is a subject that has come up on the list before, but never got a resolution. Evidently (at least on Linux systems), Zope takes the Universal Date/Time (UDT) rather than the Local Date/Time (LDT). Consequently, if you use ZopeTime(), you have to make a correction (-5 hours if you are in America/Chicago CDT). This is a wish list, I know, but for Zope 2.4.3, could there be a switch or flag that can be set that says ZopeTime() will get the local time instead of universal time? That or use something like LocalTime() and thus leave ZopeTime() alone? Note, in your Python scripts, you can... from time import time, localtime .. but not in DTML, where the code for displaying time normally resides. This isn't a trivial subject. If you have a product that displays the time (as some templates do for newbies or site developers) they don't know enough to fiddle with the code to get the time displayed correctly if they happen to live in a time zone other than the Product's author (meaning, the vast majority of the planet). ZCatalog searching more than one field at once

Hi everyone, I've built a little ZClass and a ZCatalog to catalog the instances. Among other things, this ZClass has fields called 'title' and 'description'. I've created indexes (text indexes) for each in my Catalog. I want to make an advanced search form that would allow someone to type some keywords and search the Catalog. Is it possible to search for the same keywords in two different fields? In other words, I want the user to see one keyword search box and use their input to search two different ZCatalog indexes. title property/function

OK guys - here's the problem.... I have a number of ZClasses, each one has a title property that is actually a function and pulls information from other properties of the ZClass. I want to use this property to sort my tree object. So being the python genius that I am not - I have created a python script to return the branches in the correct order sorted by title. # This is the code that returns objects for the tree view con=context return_object=[] for obj in con.objectValues(['Folder','Group', 'Project', 'Micrograph', 'Microscopy', 'Scan', 'Purification', 'Aliquot', 'Freezing', 'Progress', 'Publication', 'Reference', 'Reconstruction', 'Structure', 'CCD']): return_object.append(obj) return_object.sort(lambda a,b:a.title<b.title) return return_object However, this code does not evaluate the title - but simply returns the dtml-if statement and sorts on that.... not what I want! Zope is an application server and web-development platform; I think you are comparing apples to oranges. Zope does have lots of docs on the main site in the documentation section; consider getting a copy of the Zope Book, which is published by New Riders... Zope runs on fairly minimal hardware, but if you have high-traffic to it or lots of content, bigger is always better.
