For graphics only, this generally isn't a problem. For a mix of static and dynamic HTML where you want to serve static HTML from Apache and dynamic HTML from Zope, it can be. This is actually a pretty simple problem. If you want a visit to a URL to show something different to every user depending on their auth credentials, then unfortunately you need to dynamically generate each differing page. If the page needs to be generated dynamically, it's easier to let Zope do that than to try to persuade Apache to do it with SSI or something. Unfortunately this defeats some benefits of caching. I think that most frontend caches try hard to prevent a cached page being shown to a user if that user requests the page with an Authorization: header in the request. For example, if you were using a caching reverse proxy to handle requests to a backend Zope server, if a request came in with an Authorization header that denoted that the request came from "chrism", you wouldn't want to show the user the page generated for "fred". So you let the request make it through to the system which dynamically generates a new page. I think Zope's cache manager software lets you cache different pages represented by the same URL based on auth credentials, but the docs for it are bad enough that I can't quickly tell. :-( If you find out, let me know. There have been various attempts to allow some parts of pages to be cached while dynamically generating other parts. It's hard. > How does Zope deal with this? Zope is not particularly slow, nor is it particularly fast at serving any sort of content, be it HTML, images, whatever. It's almost always a good idea to put a reverse caching proxy in front of Zope to cache static data. There's very little downside and a lot of upside. However, you try not to have your Servlet container serving your graphics -- instead, let Apache do that as a front-end to Tomcat, and have Tomcat only invoked to serve the dynamic HTML pages. Where it gets complicated, is when you want your application (be it in Java, Python, or whatever) to manage security etc. There is no good solution to this in the Apache/Java world (e.g. no way to let your Java app evaluate security, but let Apache do the actual data serving, assuming the user passes the authorization test). Hi all, As some of you may know already, we've been hard at work building a new iteration of the Zope.org community website, one based on the CMF. This is an invitation to come and have a look at what we are doing for the new Zope.org server, and have a good kick at the tires. The idea is to get solid feedback from the community to iron out all the wrinkles and bugs that undoubtedly will be in there. You can find the server at: http://new.zope.org/ Please note however, that this is an early preview, and there are several known issues: - If you had a login on Zope.org about 2 months ago, chances are that you won't have to create a new account on new.zope.org; the LDAP database backing the site uses a 2-month old export. If you changed your password but not your email address during this time, the server can email you your password for the new server. If both changed, please email webmaster(a)zope.org for assistance. When we officially switch over, a new export will be created. - Because the current www.zope.org/dev.zope.org combination uses domain-wide cookies (.zope.org) and an incompatible session key, you cannot be logged into www.zope.org if you want to log into new.zope.org as well. Either delete the .zope.org cookie, use the 'Log out' link on www.zope.org, or use a different browser for each site. - Don't make any important changes or new content on new.zope.org and expect them to be retained. All changes to content on new.zope.org will be ignored the next time we migrate over content from the current site. DAMN Traceback!

what's the reason behind tracebacks being *allways* printed on zope? don't tell me to disable the debug mode, because that doesn't really remove the traceback from the output, it just html quotes it. why did ZC leave this behaviour as is ? wouldn't it be much more elegant if it could be handled by the standard_error_message or anything like it. I'd like only managers to see tracebacks, why should an untrusted user have access to such information? btw, I'm not looking for a patch, just an answer =) Thanks alex

core files in the zope root directory???

Hi all , I've got a problem with my Zope installation : linux mandrake 8.1 + Zope-2.3.3-src + Apache with Zope.cgi + MySQL The problem : zope stops all alone. Hi I am trying to execute some example scripts found on zope.org, like this one: http://www.zope.org/Members/anthony/tree-coding-tricks and a modified version here: http://www.zope.org/Members/rscanon/dtml-tree So there's this Python script, which I added with the Product List into Zope: class _dummy: __allow_access_to_unprotected_subobjects__=1 def __init__(self, name): self.name=name But all I get after clicking into "Save Changes" is: SyntaxError, Names starting with "_" are not allowed (__init__). So how can I make theses examples work? Cheers, Marc
