More trouble with METAL and python product

Now I see what is wrong but not how to fix it. I've got this python product that uses ZPTs and METAL. When I first visit index_html I get a cryptic error message saying something about the METAL definition. The template that holds the METAL macro is called StandardLook and is defined like this: PTF = PageTemplateFile StandardLook = PTF('zpt/StandardLook', globals(), __name__='StandardLook') index_html = PTF('zpt/index_html', globals()) If I then visit StandardLook it works; and thirdly I go to index_html again and it works. From then on it works fine. After I refresh the product the same problem occurs again. Again.... 1. I refresh the product --> no error 2. http://localhost/myinstance/index_html --> Error!! 3. http://localhost/myinstance/StandardLook --> no error 4. http://localhost/myinstance/index_html --> no error It's obvious that the StandardLook instance needs to be rendered once so that Zope can remember that that is the macro template. How do I solve this? What needs to be done? Cheers, Peter

stressing script for zope-app

Hi all, does anyone has a suggestion, how i can intercept the http-requests send to my zope-server when clicking on links/form buttons and store them externaly in say a file ? i need to make a stress-script which simulates a user accessing my site to have some numbers for the over-all performance of my site., because in production it will be used by many users in parallel, and i have no real clue how my code and/or zope scales. intercepting them would be easier because when i change code i could easily regenerate them and start the test-clients again. Any hints about the performance in general, its testing and about scaling-experiences would be very welcome. Torsten

Hi Stoons As I follow the discussion we are talking about a mascot!!! That's got nothing to do with the logo in my opinion! The Z-Logo that is present is OK as is. So please keep on using a track "Mascot". Regards Oliver

Zope and Databases

Our Zope 2.4.3 install is running on a SuSE Linux 7.3 server and we want to connect to an Oracle database which is sitting on a different server; a Sun Solaris based machine running OS 5.8 with Oracle Enterprise Edition 8.1.7.0 installed. We have downloaded the DCOracle2 product (for Red Hat Linux 7.1, Python 2.1) but we aren't using Red Hat and we seem unable to get the product to install properly. It complains about the ORACLE_HOME. Also, skimming through the documentation is extremely confusing. As far as we can tell, the docs seem to assume that the Oracle Database is installed (or to be installed) on the same server as the one that runs Zope. In our scenario, this isn't the case. Basically, how can we discover the correct ORACLE_HOME info from the Sun box and what else do we need to do with DCOracle2 to get it connecting to our Oracle database? (We know very little about Oracle if you can't tell already!). Richard H.

stab at ZMailman?

Greetings, I'm a bit confused. Im trying out Zmailman on the latest release of zope (not beta) and I get the following traceback from the ZMI product info page: Traceback (innermost last): File "/var/ZDevelopment/lib/python/OFS/Application.py", line 528, in import_products product=__import__(pname, global_dict, global_dict, silly) File "/var/ZDevelopment/lib/python/Products/ZMailman/__init__.py", line 7, in ? from Products.ZMailman import MailmanFolder File "/var/ZDevelopment/lib/python/Products/ZMailman/MailmanFolder.py", line 9, in ? from Products.PageTemplates.PageTemplateFile import PageTemplateFile ImportError: No module named PageTemplates.PageTemplateFile However, PageTemplates.PageTemplateFile does exist and there seems to be no error regarding it. search engine question

Hi all. I am implemmenting a search engine with Zope. I have it running and all, but there are three features I'm trying to implement: 1. Allow the user to select the number of results per page. I cannot seem to be able to put a variable in the field specifying the number of results per page. Also, how can I define that all results should be displayed in the same page (in case the user selects so). 2. Number the results How can I put a number next to each result? For e.g. in results 10-20, have numbers 10,11,12 next to every result 3. Show the total number of results Is there a way to calculate the total number of results? Well, any help will be greatly appreciated. I am still getting used to Zope programming and DTML. The search engine works by querying a mySQL database, in case it makes any difference. Thanks, Alex

I've had that same problem many times, it was not the SQL query that was slow but the dtml rendering, and I've always been optimizing that rendering one way or the other. But I've never used an External Method (because I don't know what it is). Could someone explain a bit more of it? A big resultset will cause a complete loadup of the records in the internal ZSQL Result object and therefore not only a slowdown, but also an increased memory request. Multiply this for many concurrent users, and you can figure the result by yourself. Moving it to an external method can partially solve the problem, but because you have to use the internal ZSQL machinery, due to caching and connection pooling reasons, then you still have to pay attention to what are you doing with the database. IMHO, what you can do is to create a two-step selection. Supposing you are providing a list of customers, you request the user to choose the starting letter. This way, out of the 10.000 records, showing only the ones starting with "A" will break down to a far smaller number, thus reducing the overall overhead. Hope this helps. Rgds Stefano
