Recently, I promoted SQLRelay <http://www.firstworks.com> a bit: as a means to connect from Unix to an MS SQL Server. I now have more experience that I want to share: SQLRelay seems quite complex and very sensible to disruptions. It consists of a set of processes that communicate via shared memory and synchronize via semaphores. These communication resources are allocated and initialized by the first process that needs them. This works fine when everything goes well. However, when there are faults causing a process to abort, the semaphores are in an inconsistent state and almost surely, you will get a deadlock. As SQLRelay is very quiet, the deadlock may not be obvious. In case of a deadlock, it is necessary to delete the communication resources manually (using "ipcs" and "ipcrm"). SQLRelay has problems with processor architectures that have alignment requirements (such as e.g. SPARC): When writing the communication ports into shared memory, it may make a word access on a byte aligned address. This will give a SIGBUS exception when the processor does not support such accesses. The process dies and the semaphores become inconsistent. Rudiments, a base of SQLRelay, has some "short read issues" (at least when used together with SQLRelay): It assumes that when a writer writes an n byte message, then the reader will be able to read this entire n byte message in a single read. But this is not guaranteed by Unix. It may split the message in many subpackets. SQLRelay raises an error in this case: something went wrong. You can choose from about several dozen possible reasons. When it does, it seems that some data structures are not in a clean state, such that destructors can enter infinite loops, crash or release indeterminate memory. I will package some patches addressing some of the issues above and submit them to Firstworks. Dieter

Using gadfly files

Hello, I'm a german teacher for computer science at Frankfurt (see www.schule-am-ried.de) I wrote a simple graphic user interface for gfplus (and of course for gadfly) named gfsql, the project is located at http://wspiegel.bei.t-online.de/gfsql/index.html The aim of the project is its use as a simple SQL-Editor in school for learning SQL. Now my question: I like to put the whole python-files (including gadfly) in one zip-file for download, would you please allow me to use your zope-version of gadfly for the project. And the next question is about licensing: I try to figured out, under which license gadfly is distributed, and I think it's something like BSD, so put I gfsql also under the BSD-license. What about the zope-distribution of gadfly? Next question: the address (URL) of A. Watters seemed to be unreachable, so I like to put a link to your ressources of gadfly. Ok? And one last question: do you think, that there may be further development for gadfly by your team? bye Walter Spiegel

Deiter et al, After reading the relevant section of your book, I tried the following: .__call__(self.myMethod, client='None', REQUEST='_.', keyword='myKeyword') This is now resulting in the error message: <exceptions.TypeError: sequence index must be integer>. Actually, it means a lot! The error is in "manage_tabs". It's almost surely caused by a name clash for the name "URL". "manage_tabs" expects "URL" to be the URL from REQUEST. Apparently, someone was able to create either an attribute or an instance named URL. This object is acquired and therefore takes precedence over the REQUEST's URL. Obviously, the new object named URL does not support "__getslice__". The problem will go away, when you edit "App/dtml/manage_tabs.dtml" and replace all occurrences of "URL" by "REQUEST.URL". I am using Python 2.x, Zope 2.5. getPhysicalPath() returns list inside a tuple!!! zope bug?

ok, this is pretty weird and looks like a zope bug to me.
