How do I integrate zope with apache

Hey there, I'm using linux 8.0 with KDE Desktop. I've got zope running on a medusa server at the moment, the one it came with. I've also got an apache server running and I was wondering how I can integrate the zope interface to be used with my linux apache server. I'm a total linux nub so go easy on me . ~Mosquito

Hello everyone, I'm new to LINUX, ZOPE, PYTHON, and this mailing list. I have a ZOPE server running on Linux and I'm trying to get my forums to work. They require PHP and mySQL both of which I have but I'm not sure how to install them into my ZOPE server. Any suggestions? ~Mosquito

privileges problem

Hello all, I'm tring to execute this script: lista = [] folder = container.indice2() #indice2 is a ZCatalog for file in folder: if not file.hasProperty('codice'): lista.append(file.id) attributes=getattr(folder, file) attributes.manage_addProperty('codice', 'inserted yet', 'string') return lista I borrowed the idea from the /Examples/GuestBook/addEntry script Zope prompts me for a user name and passwd, I type my usual account data (I'm the only user and I think I have full privileges) and BAM! Problem with zope Server

I have rehat 7.2 server with zope web sever on it . The system has been working fine for a long time. I tried today to upload a .pdf file( 10 M) to an exsiting web page on the server and but failed. Psycopg 1.0.X - Python 2.1

Hi all, have had some fun with installing psycopg in different machines and trying to take newer version into use. Below is the configure,which works for me with psycopg 1.0.1 and versions with errprs for 1.0.3 and 1.0.4. Any ideas what migth be the problem? Help appreciated. Ps. Is it just me or does someone else think, that this installing is sometimes too hard. ZServer uncaptured python exception ...

Hi! I have big problems running my Zope-2.5.0-src under Solaris 2.7 with python 2.1.2 (configure --with-thread). The same problems occur even when I install the binary for solaris-sparc. version trouble

Hi, I'm working with Zope 2.4.3 on a linux SuSE 7.0 system. I was just editing my homepage using a version ( called 'tmp' ) and 2 different browser windows ( mozilla 0.9.7 ). Then I decided that the changes I had done are ok, saved them and quited the version ( in the first browser window ). After that I found a small mistake in one of my sites and corrected it ( in the second browser window ). Somehow the version was still active and the changes were made inside it. But, it wasn't the same verion. The version the changes were made in is called 'No longer active'. I can start and quit working with that version by starting and quitting the original version tmp. But if I want to save / discard the canges there is just the message 'No unsaved work has been done in this version' The link of the version 'No longer active' points to the root directory of Zope ( I was working in the folder 'hausmann-family' ), but there is no version at all. How can I get rid of this version? Some files are locked and I can't delete them or do anything else with them. Thanks, Steffen -- Es gibt keine perfekten Menschen, nur perfekte Absichten.

Death to zClasses!

Death to ZClasses!!! ==================== By Max M. 28-05-2002 10:42 I have used Zope for a few years by now and have developed both in zClasses and Python products. While zClasses seems nice when you start out, you will soon be bitten by their subtleties. So you save a little time by not doing a Python product at the beginning, but soon you loose that time, and more as you struggle with the zClasses. I have written this document to help other people see why zClasses are "A Bad Thing". I think that way to much effort is wasted in documentation and development using zClasses. If all that energy had been focused on Python products, Zope would be much easier to use and program for everybody. so DEATH TO ZCLASSES! ;-) It is hard to change the base classes with ZClasses --------------------------------------------------- Sometimes you make a mistake, or you forget to include a base class when writing a product. So you want the ability to add them later. The order in which you subclass classes matters. Sometimes you do it wrong, and you want to change it. zClasses makes this difficult. Example:: class myFolder(SimpleItem, ObjectManager): "This won't work as SimpleItem has a method called ObjectValues that allways returns an empty tuple" class myFolder(ObjectManager, SimpleItem): "This is The Right Way as the it will call ObjetManager.ObjectValues() so yuu get the expected result" Ok you made the mistake. Now try and fix it ! Subtle changes when changing meta type -------------------------------------- If you change the meta type of a zClass you have to also change the add List name, in the zClass' factory to be able to add instances through the Zmi. That is at least when you have a Python Based ObjectManager class that uses the ZMI. It also breaks the ability to cut/copy/paste/rename those zClass objects It also makes the little + dissapear in the tree view so you cannot expand the Objectmanager based zClasses. Makes it harder to learn what Zope actually do ---------------------------------------------- When you write Python product everything is much more transparent, and there are fewer subtle effect that surprise you and make you wast hours debugging. You are more prone to do it the right way when writing Products and put login into Python and not the dtml. Simply because it is easier to do. It's also hard to document how to make zClass based products as you have to use a lot of screenshots or animations instead of text. Code for one class spread over several locations stops you from thinking clear ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It as if you wrote Python code with all of your methods in different files. And as it is common knowledge the number of errors rises exponentially with the amount of code you cannot see. It can make class seem much bigger and more complicated than it really is if you cannot see all the code. Having products with parts of the code in External methods, other as dtml-files, python scripts etc. in the Zmi is a real drag! It seems so simple to begin with, but as the product starts to grow, it is so tiring. Programming through a web browser sucks! It slows down development considderably. Using ftp in the editor doesn't help much. A hassle to upgrade on remote servers ------------------------------------- With products you just upload via ftp, and perhaps run a script to find all instances and add new attributes. With zClasses keeping a development and production server in sync is hard to difficult. There is a whole lot of software writte to work around the flaws of using and uprading zClasses. That should be a hint that somethings wrong. Other reasons that other people has reported -------------------------------------------- There is a subtle bug in the ZClass registry code that can cause instances to refer to an older class definition. Makes it hard to use straight up Python code, have to use external methods, Working from Python gives you MUCH more power Copy & paste programming does not work with ZClasses. So it's harder to start new projects. Debugging Python code is easier than debugging ZClasses. You can use CVS for the code ZClasses behave "strange" with regard to nested acquisition. I would think ParsedXML+DOM in Python Scripts+DTML/ZPT would work here??? Contrary to popular belief, I don't think ParsedXML is "dead" - it works quite fine, thank you, for all the DOM L2 stuff I do, which is likely why there hasn't been a lot of development... and I've seen that Martijn Faassen has been doing some small improvements in CVS in the last few days. All this assumes small documents like forms and news-articles, not book-sized docs, since nodes in a ParsedXML doc are not manageable, so each edit reqires the whole DOM from the document object downward... I've used this type of setup for interactive form applications as well as XML-stored content applications and been quite happy, but I've been doing a lot of DOM-in-python-scripts coding; it is a bit tedious to code for, there is a lot of recursion to think about, etc.... but once you get it right, it just works... Alternately, I think you could put any Python XSLT on top of this with a few external methods, though I think it's a bit hackish since you would be printing XML, outputting it to a string, and having it parsed again (but, hey, if it works...) - as long as you are not indexing the results of XSLT in a Catalog index for a bunch of docs! As an aside, it sounds like you need to make a lot of revisions to your documents, and if you store them in the ODB it might create bloat in a versioned ODB unless you pack frequently. A brief thought for you: create something that will do application-level versioning and use non-undo mounted storage for a repository for your documents... Consider creating a folderish type whose instances contain a few specialized objects: one is a ParsedXML DOM object that contains the current XML for your document; your folderish base object could optionally be coded to act as a proxy to this contained DOM. Also, create a simple type that contains previous revisions of the XML as string-based properties, rather than storing a full DOM for each revision. Alternately, use compression methods to compress these archived revisions XML and use file objects containing the compressed text. Then, keep track of things with a state table of some kind. The downside to this is that you would have overhead in converting XML to DOM every time you loaded up a previous revision, but from a storage perspective, this should work quite well. A caveat: I haven't done exactly this before, but, after serious thought, this is the approach I plan to take with a project I am starting work on for XML-based content types in our content management system, and my hunch is that this will work quite well. When the client interacts with the application, he is building a "record" of an interaction with a patient. This interaction can extend over a period of days, so it needs to be able to be resumed. The application now consists entirely of HTML forms which trigger Python scripts that initially create and then update a DTML Method object. I embed formatting into the DTML Method so that when the user wants to see a report of the patient interaction, all I have to do is give him a way to view the document. The client *loves* the application as it has developed so far, in part because as the code updates the DTML Method during the patient interaction, a supervising clinician can see the progress of the interaction as it develops. So I prefer not to lose the ability to allow the supervisor to see the document the code is generating, but I may have to do so. When the interaction with the patient proceeds linearly and in one session - which is most often the case - this system works like a charm. But if for any reason the interaction gets interrupted, my scripts, which always merely *append* information to the end of the document as each step proceeds, are not now capable of a smooth resumption in place. This would require, e.g., that information now stored in the DTML Method be parsed out to supply initial values to fields on the interactive form that have already been completed. That is the minimum I need, but as I have been thinking about the design, I've decided I actually need much more than that. I believe the best way to accomplish that objective of maximum flexibility for the user is to use a more structured approach to the document. As I see it, I had three alternatives: (1) parse the text in the DTML Method to pull out and rewrite pieces as needed; (2) use properties of the DTML Method in addition to text content and link the two; (3) go to XML to take advantage of readily available Python techniques for managing the structured data while being able to use XSLT to retain the ability to show the document in process immediately on demand. I spent some time looking at the first option and decided it was going to be terribly inefficient. I would in essence have to define my own start/end tags for each element of the document (which I could use comments for) and then manually parse them. Ugly. The second approach also felt inefficient because I would be storing all of the information in a document twice, once as a document (so that it could be displayed quickly on demand) and once as properties (so they could be retrieved and replaced as needed). I have not completely discarded that approach but XML seems more promising. I am fully aware of the horrendous overhead associated with XML documents but these documents are quite small (3-4 pages on average, printed) and always identically structured. With Python's excellent XML support, I have already gotten some very good routines written to parse such documents. My problem is that when I try to translate that code to Zope External Methods, they don't work and debugging them in Zope is a nightmare.
