Hey David - welcome to the 'Hello World' of Zope! Before you get blasted by the regulars, be sure you turn off HTML before you post again to the mailing groups - In order to allow Zope code to be included in notes and display correctly without being rendered, the newsgroup intentionally does NOT render HTML and instead displays your note buried in a pile of html tags and mime boundaries! As best I can tell, since Python is such a base layer language, every version called 'windows' runs on W95 - XP and everything in between. The windows binaries all have win32 in their titles to distinguish them from the linux and unix variations The Zope 2.5.1 install will automatically install Python 2.1.3. It works "out of the box", slick as anything. Your learning curve will be the challenge because there are three general styles of interfacing. The only thing missing in this setup is the Python Imaging Library, a/k/a PIL. You will need it only if you go into image manipulation like server-size resizing on the fly. You will know when you add products and they say that they need PIL installed. I suggest you search for and download the 'Zope Shelf' - it is a cool collection of the relevant documentation. The best starting place is the on-line tutorial and the Zope Book. A word of warning - Zope, in its evolution, has two major alternative ways of doing things. They are very different and can confuse the novice. The older means is through 'dtml' which takes a lego building block approach to plugging in to site features. Its great for reusability. It doesn't play well with html designers in that it is a one-way street. Once you convert a page design into dtml components, you cannot go back and use dreamweaver or go-live as effectively to fine tune the page. The newer means is by ZPT or Zope page templates. It is less intuitive to read but it plays really well with html designers. In general you use a designer to lay out a 'pro forma' page and then use ZPT to make the page dynamic by substituting images, text, etc for the pro-forma tags as it is rendered. A product like WebDrive lets you treat the Zope database as just another hard drive so your editor thinks it is working on files in the local filesystem. I point this out because the Zope Book alternates between them as you go from basic to advanced chapters. If you know that ZPT is right for you because it separates the content design from the presentation logic and allows specialists to do each, don't confuse yourself by spending too much time with the dtml approach. Eventually you will want to know both (and Python for the real programmatic work), but try to focus on one or the other approaches and stick to it until the phlosophical approach settles in and becomes intuitive and the syntax is comfortable. My early hours of frustration came primarily from confusing the two syntax and function/method names because I didn't know to treat methods and templates as pretty much mutually-exclusive was of approaching a complete solution. While one can implement the other, blended solutions get messy. Good luck! Gary

Publish static html out of local zope

Hi I'm new to zope - meaning, I can make folders, users, temaplates and worked myself through about 80 pages of the manual - and I have the following basic question. I have zope running on a local machine and don't have the resources to set up an online web-server with zope. I have some web-pages for my students that change kind of daily. They send their results as jpegs - thumbnails and bigger ones - and I show a page with a weekly overview - thumbnails in a table with their names and links to their mailto's - and when you click on the thumbnails, you get a new html-page with the real things. Well so far I do this by hand. I would like to throw the new jpegs in the weekly folder, zope looks up who is there and generates the new overview and the html-pages with the real things - and then I want to have a button to upload the parsed static html-pages to the online site. Is that possible? Where is a botton like that? What are the keywords I have to look for in the manual (I didn't find anything alike!)? Has anybody done something like that? What do I have forgotten to ask? Thanks a lot Uwe

Shopping carts for Zope?

Has anyone made comparisons between the currently available shopping carts for Zope? I'm looking for the most used (trusted) piece of code to start from, that allows me all kinds of reports, and to export the database to relational databases, when needed . What about mixing Zope and shopping carts written in other languages? Has anyone had the experience? Thanks in advance, Ausum

Thanks for the ideas on this (individual comments at end). I've localized the problem a bit, but I still don't understand it -- here's hoping this rings a bell with somebody. :-D I've tracked the problem down to a "manage_upload()" call from a class extending "Image" (i.e. I've inherited "manage_upload" from the OFS.Image.File class in Zope). It happens on the very first call, so this must be a deterministic bug and not a resource-limit or other cumulative problem. (I just tracked this down with breakpoints in my product code). I've applied the patch to Python 2.1.3 to deal with the stack size problem on FreeBSD. I've eliminated ZEO, so I'm now using regular filestorage on the server. So there are fewer unknowns now. The call to manage_upload is given a Python file object (I've verified that it has valid values for f.name, f.mode, and f.fileno()). The file in question exists on the filesystem (in a subdirectory under the product directory): /usr/local/zope/instance/Products/Narya/www/Emoticon -rw-rw-rw- 1 nobody nobody 496 Apr 7 03:18 em_angry.gif What's more, I had (somewhat inefficiently) read in this entire file's contents using a regular f.read() method without causing any errors, right before making the call to manage_upload. Just for grins, I added f.seek(0) after that to make sure it was positioned at the beginning of the file. No joy, though. (I have tried variations on the file permissions and ownership -- this seems like the most "wide-open" case, in an effort to rule-out permission problems). This works just fine on my development server, but fails on the production server as I described (capsule below). I'm not really too clear on how manage_upload() works -- what sort of things does it have to be able to do? Am I correct in feeding it the file object? (and if not, why did it work before, I wonder?). The story so far... Zopelabs.com

www.Zopelabs.com used to be quite active -- updating at a minimum once or twice a week -- it seems to have fallen off considerably ( the last thing I see is late June -- and some areas have no change since mid June). Does anybody know what the situation is with that site?

service discovery protocol support

Hi, Does Zope have support for any service discovery protocols? I do not care which so long as I can find servers after they mysteriously diappear and pop up somewhere else. thanks D
