Why does running zope as a service on win32 suck? I have had good luck with my setup - zope 2.4.3, NT4, no ZEO. Help with CVS ZEO2 Client, Server on same Win32 machine

I checked out the ZEO CVS today (ZEO2), The ZopeReadme is very clear and focused. However, I am having trouble locating the point of failure on my Windows XP setup. I think the clients and server are running, but I can't access objects through the browser. 0) I have Python 2.2 installed at C:\Program Files\Zope for non-Zope use. It is the default if you just type 'python' at a command prompt. 1) Zope 2.5.1 is installed in C:\Program Files\Zope (as C:\Progra~1\Zope) 1a) Zope's Python 2.1.3 (#35) is at C:\Progra~1\Zope\bin\python.exe 1b) I have Pythonwin for 2.1 installed on Zope's python, use it for the browser, and hopefully soon with ZEO. I also have PyXML, reportlab and PIL in there. 1c) Zope runs as a service, shut down before any of the following steps. 2) ZEO is at C:\Progra~1\Zope\lib\python\ZEO (i.e. start.py is there) 3) C:\Progra~1\Zope\custom_zodb.py contains these lines: from ZEO.ClientStorage import ClientStorage Storage = ClientStorage(('', 8800)) (the one in the ZEO misc directory didn't seem to specify the port, I don't know if it defaults to 8800, so I used this one from the ZopeReadme) 4) I open a command prompt and type: C:\Program Files\Zope>bin\python.exe lib/python/ZEO/start.py -p 8800 (there is no display of status, but I don't get the cursor back. Is it running?) 5) I open another command prompt and type: C:\Program Files\Zope>bin\python.exe lib/python/ZEO/start.py -p 8800 I get a Win32 error/stop dialog with the following error. "This application has failed to start because tk83.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." (This happens whenever I have run z2 from the command line (non service), and it doesn't seem to have any other adverse affects. I don't know if this is known behavior) (there is no display of status as in normal Z2 debug mode, but I don't get the cursor back. Is it running?) 6) In a browser, the ZMI doesn't respond: http://localhost:8080/manage FWIW, I have also tried step 5 as: C:\Program Files\Zope>bin\python.exe lib/python/ZEO/start.py and "net start zope" but with no result. Can anyone spot the source of my mistake? Thanks, I'm looking forward to ZEO in a big way.

But here is the code that I am using, you will notice that the user attributes are NOT in the REQUEST object: for user in context.Users.RegistrationInfo.objectValues("UserInfo"): context.sql_users_insert(user) The sql_users_insert takes a bunch of parameters and the "user" object above is a ZClass with properties that have exact names as parameters for zsql method. Then use container.sql_insert(request) You arguments will be marshalled for you, as above. Well, if the variables are in REQUEST, zope will bind them to the parameters of the ZSQL Method--as long as the names match. So, I could in effect call <dtml-call sql_insert> without passing any arguments. But I want to mimick this in Python Script. Another "convincing" argument can be found in the Zope Book: "If you call a Z SQL Method without argument from DTML, the arguments are automatically collected from the environment." http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/current/RelationalDatab ases.stx#3-66 I am sure there is a way to do this in script, but I don't know how to. I am hoping that someone on this list knows. Are you convinced now? Oh, I think I have html turned off now. Exactly. The most important lesson we have learned is that "portals are fundamentally content-free". Portals aggregate views of information and services that reside elsewhere. If you go with a portal framework like uPortal, you still need a CMS (though the uPortal roadmap now has CMS on it ....). Right now it seems the Java world can't compete with the CMS features of Zope - so that's why were backing both horses. But with things like Cocoon and Jahia maturing I'm not sure how long this situation will prevail. Zope +/- CMF does have a window of opportunity, IMHO, to get a foothold by stealth in the Java-based portal framework space. One (or more) XML skins need to be written that allow Zope apps to be rendered (via XSLT) into the portal framework (uPortal is not unique in using XSLT to render content into channels/portlets). I'd like to acknowledge the role Chris Withers has had in steering me towards this view. Zope and memory leaks

Thanks for everyone's help with my server questions a couple of weeks ago. Last week, the hammer fell and they turned the power off at our ISP. I lost 275 days of server uptime! Worse, our server remains physically inaccessable, locked away and subject to bankruptcy actions. Not a pretty picture. I scrambled and built a new server from a borrowed mobo, a processor destined for my wife's computer, and other offal. Debian cooperated and loaded cleanly. I stopped Zope, copied over a week-old Data.fs backup, installed one missing product, repointed my port 80 to the new machine, futzed with Apache, and got back up by the time the DNS changes filtered through. My 640/256 ADSL line is handling over 2000 hits/hr. Phew! Here's my question, though. On my old machine, the Zope process leaked memory like all get-out. For instance, in a mere 14 hours, it went from 75MB to 285MB. I had to restart the Zope process daily. Ok, I see now. I just need to call the methods of the MailHost object using something like: context.MailHost.manage_makeChanges('MailHost','mail.attbi.com',20) Simple :). Now I just need to study up on calling python scripts from DTML documents so I can pass in the MailHost attributes new settings.
