TranslationService and charset

Hi, I use the translation_service object from a Plone Python product to get the translaltion of texts with this method... def translate(text) ts = getattr(self, 'translation_service', None) if not ts: return text translated = ts.translate('newsletter', text) if not translated: return text else: return translated It works but returns the translated text in the original charset (ascii, latin1, ...) from the MessageCatalog and not in my plone publishing charset (utf-8). I need to know the charset used in the associated MessageCatalog object to recode that translated text into the plone publishing charset. There's certainly a way to do this because Plone recodes all that comes from a MessageCatalog through a TranslationService into the Plone publishing charset, but I'm stucked hacking TranslationService and Localizer code ! Acquiring permissions on cataloged objects

In a product I'm making, privileged and unprivileged users can query a ZCatalog that indexes both restricted and unrestricted objects. So I'd like to filter out restricted objects from catalog returns for the unprivileged users. Here's what I tried: 1. Give objects an extra property at creation time that indicates the crucial permission (role: Anonymous, permission: View). Doesn't work because the objects are nested, and have to acquire permissions from their parents. 2. Somehow get SecurityCheckPermission to loop over the 'real' objects and block rendering of the corresponding result object. Something like this: <dtml-in expr="TheCatalog({'meta_type':'TheObject'})"> <dtml-if expr="_.SecurityCheckPermission( 'View', object"> <dtml-var title> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> This should work if only I could get anything out of the record object that allows me to reliably acquire the 'real' object. I.e. I don't know how to fill in the "object" in the code above. Most promising is running the getPath() method on the result object, but I haven't managed to coerce its result into something SecurityCheckPermission can work with. 3. Following Juri Pakaste's blog post <http://www.helsinki.fi/~pakaste/blog/ugly_zope_hacks.html>, I realised that even testing permissions on remote objects needed the 'View' permission, so I tried something like this: <dtml-in expr="TheCatalog({'meta_type':'TheObject'})"> <dtml-try> <dtml-call "_.int(getPath)"> <dtml-var title> </dtml-try> </dtml-in> Same problem: how do I get anything in that <dtml-try> block to access the actual object? <dtml-call "_.int(getPath)"> and (very, very) numerous variations don't work. people structuring

Hello, Being new to zope, I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around how to structure people objects in our dept. Perhaps this is a common modelling problem which someone has done before: We have people, and people may have many different roles. So for example, a person can be a lecturer and also a fire warden. Now each person has common properties, and then more specific ones as a lecturer or fire warden. So I create a container for common persons, and then containers for lecturers and containers for fire wardens. Each is its own class, with its own properties. Now with my brain still full of relational data base concepts, I use each object's id as a key, so to look up lecturer Joe's telephone number, I say in the context of lecturer, joe.people.joe.telephone which is very ugly and path dependent.... furthermore, if Joe the lecturer has a specific phone number then I want that, not Joe the person's number. Another way could be to have a getTelephone() method and use aquisition, but again, that would be structure dependent - all lecturers and firewardens would have to live in containers within the People container. So can an object 'inherit/acquire' another object's properties without that object being a subclass of the other? Should I forget this altogether and use ZCatalogues? Is there something really obvious staring me in the face? Thanks for any pointers. Opening topic crashes zdaemon

Hello, I have installed Zope & CMF on a FreeBSD virtual private server. It seems to mostly work but some things cause Zope to crash. E.g., 2003-09-21T10:58:40 ERROR(200) zdaemon Process 51333 terminated by signal SIGSEGV(11) and 2003-09-21T11:06:47 ERROR(200) zdaemon Process 54714 terminated by signal SIGBUS(10) These were called when I tried to simply open a topic that I created, but have been unable to do anything with because the daemon keeps crashing. I installed everything from ports, including Python 2.1 (and it has the stack size patch) * Zope version: (Zope 2.6.1 (source release, python 2.1, linux2), python 2.1.3, freebsd4) * Python version: 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 21 2003, 10:51:54) [GCC 2.95.4 20020320 [FreeBSD]] * System Platform: freebsd4 from the products list: * CMFCalendar (Installed product CMFCalendar (CMF-1.4)) * CMFCore (Installed product CMFCore (CMF-1.4)) * CMFDefault (Installed product CMFDefault (CMF-1.4)) I tried using Plone and gave up because it was crashing the daemon, too.
