Sorry for replying directly to you, Rob. I'll keep looking for some archetypes examples and research the CMF more. The breadth and depth of zope is just so overwhelming sometimes. It's great that all this ability is there but I guess I need a REALLY good zope/plone book. I'm getting the new zope book that comes out friday. Can't wait! I'd go for Zope for anything complex. Why? I'll explain ;) For quick-and-dirty database to webpage things, PHP wins out every time. Anything that involves basic processing work I'd go to PHP as well. But for anything complex, or if I'm starting from scratch data-storage-wise I'd choose Zope. Basically, despite all PHP's libraries, you start from scratch with PHP. If you want to present friendly URLs to fetch objects (which in PHP would then grab stuff from the DB) like /staff/managerial/joe_bloggs you'd need to either create a whole directory structure for each person, or you'd need to use mod_rewrite to a script and process it with PHP to get what you need, then you'd have to fetch the data and display it. In Zope you create the object in the right place, and you're done! You could create a 'StaffMember' product and define the behaviour and data there and it'd be stored, right there, in Zope. If you need to search, use a ZCatalog. SQL is handy though, and ZSQL can be used for that, but in a similar way. I've only just started on Zope development, but in PHP you always seem to be reinventing the wheel, so to speak. I've made several backends for my website, and none have been finished. Though my current Zope site isn't finished, it's mostly working, and with nowhere near the effort of the PHP sites. Zope Apache Question

I am trying to get Zope to play with Apache in an environment where I don't have root access and I cant have any persistent precesses. I am leaning towards the fact that it cant be done based on info I have seen on the Internet. Does anyone know of a solution that will work for me in the situation I ma in? Thanks A

Must zope/plone objects be CAPITALIZED??? I called my zwiki page 'whiteboard' and Plone(Zope?) keeps renaming it 'Whiteboard' !?!?! Ahhhhhhhhhh! Sound familiar? how fix? zeo.conf socket

Hello Zope-List, I hope I'm in the appropriate list ;-) I'm trying to configure Zope-2.7.3 with ZEO (this is my first experience with Zope > 2.5.x) and I read somewhere that in the configuration file 'zeo.conf' in the <zeo>-section you can set the key 'address' to a 'host:port' pair or a 'unix domain socket'. In the <runner>-section there is also a 'socket-name' key, that's default value is '$INSTANCE/etc/zeo.zdsock'. Now: what is the difference between the 'address' (when set to a socket) and the 'socket-name'? And where has the zope-client to 'point to'? address od socket-name? Thank you!! Archetypes won't install

Hey guys - I just got the latest and greatest zope - 2.7.3 and am trying to install the Archetypes product. Now, my zope server refuses to start. I temporarily get a port 8080 used through 'nmap', but then 2 seconds later it's gone and there are no python processes running via 'ps -A'. I've tried the latest archetypes from sf.net and i just tried 1.2.5-rc-4 based on Andy McKay's reference in his plone book. I don't have plone installed - just zope and the other required modules for archetypes. Any thoughts? I can't find good material for installation troubleshooting archetypes. Thanks in advance.

Registrering a codec in Zope

I have a special unicode codec that I register with Zope. like: import codec codecs.register(special_codec) But every time I refresh the product that uses the codec, it doesn't get registered again. So my somestring.encode() function returns a None. For every minor change I need to restart the zope server, and it is just soooo slooow to work with. Does anybody have an idea as to how I can avoid doing this? I am in a WinXP machine with Zope 2.7.3 from the installer. I guess I need to put the codec somewhere outside the Product folder, but how do I then get it loaded as part of the Zope startup? -- hilsen/regards Max M, Denmark http://www.mxm.dk/ IT's Mad Science
