I've had success with setting the timeout. The only thing that bugs me right now is that I can only set it globally. Right now I have a monkey patch that fixes up httplib with a default timeout, which makes it global to any httplib based request (such as urllib and urllib2 functionality). I also did the same with FTP. Now at least I don't worry that some bad request will lock up a thread for an inordinate amount of time, potentially forcing zope to eventually run out of threads. I really whish the Python API for socket based functionality would've followed to allow specifying the timeout for each request though, in fact I find it outright bizarre it didn't!! Foe exmaple you can't specify a timeout for a request done through urllib directly, since you can't have access to the socket before the request goes out. Anyways, all this to say that the problem of having Zope generating network connections and locking up threads is evry real, and given the current design, makes sense. I've been toying with the idea of implementing a framework that would fork threads or start a seperate process for executing these types of requests, and providing a consistent API for Zope, allowing things to be asynchronous, and protecting the core thread pool. In the world of web services, this would be most handy. Of course the performance impact vs. benefits would have to be studied. No matter, it's more work than I'm willing to take on though .. Maybe in Zope 3? How do you replace content with an action?

I need to be able to replace the content of a defined variable with an action. That action is by clicking a link that will redefine the variable with different content. Here is an example: <div tal:define="results here/view_pc_sql">  <a href="" tal:define="global results here/view_sortSysName">link</a> <div tal:define=" start request/start|python:0; batch python:here.getBatch(results)"> Any ideas? Or has someone done this before? I have been stuck on this issue since Monday. Thanks.

if I have this: <a href="" tal:define="test python:here.select(1)"> PCName </a> how can I use the variable 'test' after </a>? If it is not possible, is there another way of doing this based on a link that will give me the same functionality? Thanks.

Need a suggestion

The concept that I am working on is not difficult but I keep running into barriers in zope. I am using a zope page template that displays a table of data retrieved from my database. I need to create a link that once clicked will call a zsql method that will redefine: <div tal:define="results here/view_pc_sql; start request/start|python:0; batch python:here.getBatch(results)"> . . . </div> So, initially the data is displayed based on the zsql method view_pc_sql. Now, I need to add a link that will redefine the results variable using a different zsql method. The problem I have been having is the fact that I am trying to redefine the results variable in a <a href..> so once I close it </a> it does not retain the values I just inserted once I get to displaying the data further down the page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely frustrated, Laura

I'm not too sure about any problems with OpenBSD there might be. Try pinning this down to a particular event, as I'm willing to bet that it will be fairly impossible (and very time consuming) to debug what's happening from what you've said. Cheers, David

However, I want my <a> to define the value of test because intially I need it to be equal to nothing and the <a> will define the value. But, this doesn't work because if I do this like you suggested after I close the link </a> the value of test will go right back to nothing. So, I don't know if this is possible what I am trying to do. I need conditional statements basically. So, if test <div tal:condition=test> is true it needs to perform an operation. But to perform the operation it has to be triggered by the link. How is the a element supposed to be "defining the value"? The a element is just something you render onto the page during processing. If you know the value you will stick into it, use that value for the test. In fact, the whole test could be done outside the scope of the a element. Please explain more clearly what you are trying to accomplish, and where the data to do it is supposed to come from. Cheers, Tom P

FileSystemSite aware product

Hi, I have a container product and I would like to write the corresponding FSxxx adapter. It would be nice if I could map the object as a folder on the filesystem. I've got this working, but I find my solution too complex. It would be nice if someone could give a better way. I map the object to a file "name.xxx" (which stores some object properties) and a folder "_name.xxx" (which is hidden to FSSite and acts as the real container). In the product I define three classes: * XxxSurrogate(DirectoryViewSurrogate, Xxx), Xxx is the original, non FS, product class. * XxxView(DirectoryView) on which I override __of__ so it returns a XxxSurrogate for the directory "_name.xxx". * FSXxx(FSObject) which parses "name.xxx" and creates instances of XxxView. What I don't like from that solution are the XxxSurrogate and XxxView classes. Does FileSystemSite provide some way to acomplish that in a simpler way?
