The solution isn't to add the role, but rather to edit the user and provide a new list of roles, like so: member = context.portal_membership.getMemberById(userid) context.acl_users.userFolderEditUser(userid, \ None, \ new_roles, \ <---- here! member.getDomains()) The API documentation might be sufficient, however, it's quite difficult to find the correct method in the first place. Hello list, --- I'm trying to use the MembershipTool to append a role to one of my users, using the setLocalRoles API-function. How does this function work? I want to upgrade a user from plain 'Member' to a new role, in a form script. Newbie - can't log in to localhost:8080/manage

Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere. I couldn't find anything suitable in recent archives, but if it has already been answered, a URL would be much appreciated. I've just installed Zope version 2.7.2-5.1 under SuSE 9.2 Pro, using apt. The installation is fine and localhost:8080 comes up just fine as expected. However, I can't log in to the management site at localhost:8080/manage. As promised, here's a summary (below). I only got three messages, and they were about the one company I specifically mentioned in my first message. This doesn't really surprise me as I doubt many regulars here are concerned with this kind of shared hosting, and I'm still not sure this is the best channel for the kind of information I'm seeking. If anyone knows of some better channel for this kind of info, I'd be delighted to hear about it. I only received feedback about Zettai.net. Two very positive responses, one negative. Based on this feedback, and just looking around at different hosting providers' web sites, I'm fairly certain I'll proceed and get an account with Zettai. More below. --- The first positive response was from David Pratt (fairwinds(a)eastlink.ca) He wrote, among other things: "I ordered a second virtual server (jail environment) from them last week which is my vote of confidence. They have knowledgeable, friendly staff and are responsive to support queries. They also keep you well informed of issues affecting the servers. I think it also helps to have a host that understands Zope particularly because you may have an unplanned problem that you may not have encountered or maybe need some insight on how to expand." and "It was hard for me to find a host that could offer the flexibility I wanted in my applications development and I have found that the virtual server is a really nice balance of cost and flexibility." He also graciously advised me a bit on the specifics of the type of account I'd need, noting that RAM allocation is key with Zope and particularly Plone, and adding: "Products like Placeless Translation seem to also add about 20Mb to your footprint. The more products in your zope instance, the more RAM you need as a base - then the size of your zodb's and concurrent usage factors into this. I am still trying to figure this one out quite frankly, and I guess the best indicator will be experience." Finally, in a follow-up message to me, he also said (among other things - I'm trying hard to keep this somewhat brief) "My opinion right now is that I don't need to go anywhere else as far as a host goes - my plan is to eventually move from virtual servers to dedicated servers and there are a few options for those when I get there. The big thing for me is that I know what my costs are and know that as I expand I have an understandable and predictable path while keeping the costs in line." --- The second positive responder was Ken Johnston, who has been developing a site on Zettai for four months. He sent me a very enthusiastic e-mail in support of them. It sounds like they've worked with him a lot as he learns by doing on his first Zope/Plone site. --- The only negative response I got was from Chris Withers; he posted his messages about this to the list, so I don't think I need to reproduce them here. I do want to say that I hope I didn't put Zettai unfairly on the spot (I suspect I did). I'd love to hear from other hosting providers, even; if I were to recieve information from several hosting providers (beyond offerings, prices, and whatever's already on the Zope.org hosting page - more "this is what we're about, this is how stable we are, these are our future plans" kind of information), I'd be glad to compile it here or on a web page somewhere. --- A sincere thank-you to the respondents! - AM Thomas

Hi there, I am collecting information on the php-based CMS Typo3. The reason for doing this is twofold. - In a project we are involved with, we are expected to point out strengths and weaknesses of a Zope/Plone vs a Typo3 based CMS/intranet based solution. - In our daily work we are often confronted with Typo 3 and especially during introductory workshops we are asked to explain the differences. I would therefore love to hear from people that have experience working with both of them. Upgrading Zope Products

Is there a best practice for making changes to a Zope Product? Specifically I've written a product based off of ZCatalog. In the newest version I have added a few things to the _properties and a new index. I've found that instances of my product that have not made changes to the default properties pick up the new _properties. However if someone had previously added a property or changed the default values the new _properties do not show up. I was thinking it may be best to have an upgrade method that can bring any instance up to date by adding properties, etc. Is there a standard way for doing this? Any experiences on one way being better than another? FYI, We've got about a 40 gig ZODB and searching all of it to find objects to upgrade is about impossible. zope restore

Hi Folks, I've been digging through the website, and I can't find anything that really tells me what I need to know, but if it's there, please lmk. I've been tasked with restoring a zope installation that was on a failed raid array a month back. I've got a new box up, running latest debian, etc, and the default zope installation will come up (debian runs zope apparently on 9674 instead of 8080), but I cannot get the old zope instance to come up at all. On the old server, zope was in /var/lib/zope2.7/, it's now in /var/lib/zope. The old server was using mostly just the default instance, in instances/default. As far as I've gotten right now is try and copy the old 'default' instance to the new zope/instances directory, and use zopectl to bring it up. The Data.fs file in the old installation is 1.7G, so there's a lot of data in there that is desperately needed. I've used zope before, mostly with the cms plone, but I've never run into issues of this kind. Thanks a bunch for any help you can give me, on-list or off. Colin

Writing/accessing ZSQL methods on the filesystem

Hi, everyone. I'm working on a Zope product that uses ZSQL methods to connect to PostgreSQL. So far, I've used the Web-based interface to create my methods, but I'm getting a little tired of doing so. Moreover, I would like to be able to check the methods into CVS along with the rest of the product. I'm sure that there's a simple way to do this; after all, if I can keep my templates in a "zpt" directory, it shouldn't be that hard for me to keep my SQL in a "zsql" directory. But my searches haven't uncovered any obvious answers. Does anyone have any hints as to how I could/should do this? Is there a reason why this isn't a popular way to go about doing things?
