Dieter, Andreas and Daryl Here comes a detailed description of a new Zope-installation I just made on a new Debian (testing) machine. Here are the steps to reproduce my problem. (I'm still not sure it is a problem other than me not understanding how this should work). Downloading Zope wget http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.10.2/Zope-2.10.2.tgz tar -xzvf Zope-2.10.2.tgz cd Zope-2.10.2-final ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/zope make sudo make install sudo ./usr/local/zope/bin/mkzopeinstance.py /usr/local$ sudo chown -R zope.zope zope /usr/local$ sudo chown -R zope.zope zopeinst sudo jed /usr/local/zopeinst/etc/zope.conf <-- set effective-user zope leira:/usr/local/zopeinst/bin# sudo ./runzope Logging in to ZMI directly to port 8080 I add a new Page Template. If the page template contains only hei på deg it saves OK and runs OK. If it contains either of the tal-lines below I get the following error message: <div tal:content="python:unicode('hei på deg','utf8')" /> Compilation failed exceptions.UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe5' in position 33: ordinal not in range(128) <div tal:content="python:u'hei på deg'" /> Compilation failed exceptions.UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe5' in position 26: ordinal not in range(128) <div tal:content="python:'hei på deg'" /> Compilation failed exceptions.UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe5' in position 25: ordinal not in range(128) In this test I have used IE6 (and it is not passing HTTP_ACCEPT_CHARSET in the request). By the way: The character 'å' has value 0xe5 in iso-8859-1. Should the above tal-statements have worked? I have done no other configuration on the zope-instances than stated here but are consistant with my problems on another installation at work. There are 3rd party solutions to use IIS (which cannot proxy on its own), but Apache is all you need. The Zope book has the gist here: - http://www.plope.com/Books/2_7Edition/VirtualHosting.stx That's the latest version, but the version on the Zope site is for 2.6, and as you can see little has changed: - http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/VirtualHosting.… The gist is: - - Zope serves over HTTP. - Apache can /proxy/ HTTP. - The Zope Virtual Host Monster can rewrite the URLs generated by Zope to those required to pass the traffic through Apache. You don't need to do anything on the Zope side other than ensure that the VHM is present - all the work is done by a rewrite rule in the Apache virtual hosts setup. The rewrite rules can be fiddly, and a great resource is the Rewrite Rule Witch: - http://betabug.ch/zope/witch I've mainly done this with Apache 2.0.x, but I have used the same basic setup under 1.3.x - I can't recall if there were any great differences, but I still have one running server with 1.3.x on it, so I should be able to help either way. Can I suggest that you read up and have a play, and come back with any specific questions? I found the rewrite rules very fiddly at first, but soon got used to them - you might need some patience to get to grips with that part, but that's the only bit that caused me any pain. You don't say how you will be connecting Zope to MS SQL Server, but I can recommend the eGenix ODBC DA - it's not free, but it's not expensive either, and if you value your time at all it's cheaper and safer than doing it any other way... frameset problems

I have this page: <frameset rows="75%,25%"> <frame src="<dtml-var page>"> <frame src="<dtml-call expr="getproperty(page=_['page'])">"> </frameset> The 'page' variable is in the request but no matter what I try I am having problems passing it the the python script 'getproperty'. Zope 2.6.4 + Win32 server

I'm trying to migrate from a Linux server with Oracle to a win32 server with MS SQL Server. I need to run it behind a webserver so that I can connect through SSL. I've tried IIS, Apache + PCGI, and Apache + FastCGI. Has anyone been able to successfully run a Zope + win32 Web Server successfully, that can help. -- David VanKirk

strange image error

I am pleased to announce the release of TextIndexNG V 3.2.0. TextIndexNG V 3 is a complete new implementation based on Zope 3 technologies and can be used both in Zope 2.10+, Plone 2.5 and Plone 3.0. Changes in 3.2.0: * requires Zope 2.10 or higher * update parser to PLY 2.1 * Splitter: the SimpleSplitter is now the default splitter. Zope: 2.10.2 Python: 2.4.4 I am not sure if this is a zope problem or a browser problem or a lack of my understanding of webservers and/or utf-8 & unicode but here it is: I have a page template with a form and a textarea input element. The value for the element comes from a database (MySQL) field. The database field contains utf-8 encoded text (includes the bullet and registered characters). When the page is displayed in Firefox (version 1.5.0.9) it displays fine. However when the page is displayed in IE 6 (or 7), it shows garbage characters for the bullet and registered characters. What I find as strange is that if the same field is displayed as just text (i.e. just in a td element rather than in an input element) it displays fine in IE. My page template has the following headers: <html metal:define-macro="page" tal:define="dummy python:request.RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/html;; charset=utf-8');" > <head> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> Firefox reports the page encoding as UTF-8 with meta: content-type text/html; charset=utf-8 Input element: <textarea cols="50" name="detail_desc" rows="10" tal:content="record/detail_desc | nothing"></textarea><br> I have also tried adding accept-charset="utf-8" to the form element I have been able to fix the problem by adding this to my zope.conf: <cgi-environment> HTTP_ACCEPT_CHARSET utf-8 </cgi-environment> I don't understand why this "fixes" the problem or if it is the correct way to resolve this. Hello All, I've recently inherited the job of co-administering an existing Zope 2.9 system that is performing very flakily. While I admit to knowing nothing about Zope administration before the last couple of weeks, I've been busy reading the mailing list archives, etc., and I'm convinced that something obscure is wrong in this particular installation. I'm hoping some kind/brave soul here can help me figure it out. That all in mind, the behavior is difficult to accurately describe. On what appears to be a semi-random basis, things being served up by Zope are inaccessible from the web; clients get timeout messages from their web browser. While this is going on, things being served up directly by Apache are fine. Just to make things more confusing, when Zope flatlined this morning, I got the following message: Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request GET /portal. Reason: Error reading from remote server ...which is the first I've seen of any actual error messages when this behavior is occuring. For some reason that I'm unaware of, Zope will typically be restarted when this flatlining occurs; I think it's a process monitor tool one of my co-admins have installed, but I'm not 100% certain of that. Once it's restarted, things work fine. Does anyone have a clue what could be going on? Again, I'll be more than happy to supply additional info, run tests, whatever may be necessary to help figure out what the deal may be. Thanks, Alex Kirk
