Representing dates before 1970 in DateTime
by Max M 22 Oct '03

22 Oct '03

I have written a CV product for Zope. Basically it contains a list of competencies. Each competency has a start and end date. I have used Zopes DateTime object for this, and that is the problem, as it will only go back to 1970. But some of the users has educations and jobs from before 1970, so I also need to represent dates before 1970. Is there a simple workaround for this, or do I need to use something like mxDateTime for the task? regards Max M

zexp file
by D. Rick Anderson 22 Oct '03

Is there any way to extract files from a .zexp file? I have an exported file from a way older Zope server that I can't get to import into our current Zope server. I'm sure it's because it used some product that I don't currently have installed, but I can't figure out what it is. There are some JPGs in that zexp that I need to get out. Can this be done? Thanks, Rick

Custom register script
by Declan Shanaghy 22 Oct '03

22 Oct '03

I have done some customization to the register script for my portal. Everything works fine when a Manager uses the register script to register other users. However when an anonymous user tries to register himself it barfs because of the last line of the following code. portal_registration.addMember(REQUEST['username'], password, properties=REQUEST) homeFolder = portal.portal_membership.getHomeFolder(id=username) if homeFolder: homeFolder.setTitle (Name + "'s Home") That line is just setting the title on the users home folder. Shouldn't this be allowed? I have worked around the problem by setting a proxy role for Manager on the register script, but this is kind of dangerous because the register script takes some parameters which could allow someone to do something i dont want them to. Does anyone have any other suggestions for to do this?

Copying object programmatically.

Hi List, I'm putting together a small script to convert folders to orderedFolders, and adding and removing the objects isn't a problem so far, but I have been unable to figure out a quick way to copying their contents. Any easy ways of doing this? Thanks, Alec Munro

Retrieving a set number of entries
by Lalo Castro 22 Oct '03

22 Oct '03

Hi, I'm building a database interface in Zope. We are using Zope 2.6, Python 2.1.3, and the database is in PostGreSQL 7.3.3. The problem I am having is trying to search the database and return a set number of entries. Like how Yahoo! returns 25 possibilities in it's search per page. Or how Google returns 10. I'd like to know how to code it so that a database search returns a set number of entries found, and can make pages with multiple entries if there's more than the set number of entries on a page. Anyone have any ideas? -- Lalo Castro Programmer/Analyst McHenry Library (831) 459-5208

BTreeFolder2 add speed with 10k objects
by Jeff Youel 22 Oct '03

22 Oct '03

I'm using a CMFBTreeFolder to hold objects for a query later. Each object in the folder has a few string members. The folder now has about 10,200 objects. When I add a new instance of the object to the folder, it takes around 18 seconds. I've tracked the hotspot down to BTreeFolder2._setOb()'s: tree[id] = object which takes around 17 seconds. By comparison, the rest of the request including cataloging the object takes less than a second. I'm using Zope 2.6.1, CMF 1.3.1. I updated by BTreeFolder2 code to the latest from CVS and ran manage_cleanup() which reported no errors. Any ideas how I can improve this? Thanks, Jeff

RE: [Zope] Zope-2.6.2 traceback

Actually, yes, it is the best way IMHO :) J.F. -----Original Message----- From: zope-bounces(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-bounces@zope.org]On Behalf Of Arenz, Ralph Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2003 12:39 PM To: 'zope(a)zope.org' Subject: [Zope] Zope-2.6.2 traceback Hi, although i started zope with the -D option there is no traceback in the error message in case of an error. Of course i can expand the standard error message with an "<dtml-var error_tb>" but is that the right way, i guess not ?! Any ideas? regards Ralph _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

Zope installation
by Fritz Ivy Lopez 22 Oct '03

22 Oct '03

To Whom It May Concern, I used to have an installation on a Win NT machine and it was working well. I am now using a Windows XP machine and I installed Zope. The installation seemed to have gone well and the machine that I am working on being not XP, I did not install it as a winservice. However, after clicking on the start.bat file and logging on at http://localhost:8080/manage, an error page occurred. What other configuration should i fix? The installer that I used is Zope-2.6.2-win32-x86. I will really appreciate it if you guide me in this matter. Thank you. Sincerely, Fritz Ivy Lopez --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? RE: [Zope] zpt encoding and content-type

Also as a technicality, the thing you are talking about is not actually a PI, even though it looks like one. Strictly speaking, it is the "XML Declaration", and does not (or should not) get passed through to the application as a PI would. So the answer lies in getting the actual encoding of the page and the declared encoding to agree - by default the declared encoding is utf-8 or utf-16. The fact that your application gives you "ascii out of range" errors indicates that it is assuming ascii encoding, which in turn indicates that it is not correctly paying attention to the encoding rules - otherwise it would be using utf-8 (and possibly finding different errors). If the application is written in Python (and I think I recognize that error message), then it is using ordinary Python strings instead of unicode strings. So you seem to have two problems - 1) get the encoding declared correctly. 2) get the processing app to process the encoding correctly. Cheers, Tom P
