Zope instanse falls asleep :-(
by Gitte Wange 19 Oct '03

19 Oct '03

Hello, I have a big problem with a customers Zope instanse - almost every day it "falls asleep": When you try to access their site it's like no requests get's to the site. I try to stop the instance - and when I start it again I'm told that another process has already locked the database file. Running $ps -ax reveals that their is some stale python processes mathing the PID of the recently stopped Zope instanse ... The setup is: Debian 3.0 Zope 2.6.1 CMF 1.3 And some other CMF products. We have a similiar setup running on another machine that doesn't have these problems. Any good ideas to what is happening ??? -- Gitte Wange Technical Manager Email: gitte(a)mmmanager.org Web: http://www.mmmanager.org Tlf: +45 36 46 20 02 After 1.5 years of Python, I'm still discovering richness (and still unable to understand what the hell Jim Fulton is talking about). -- Gordon McMillan, 13 Mar 1998

zope and apache problem

Hi we currently host umpteen sites and occassionally we need to create a virtual host for them. Previously this appeared to work ok however for certain sites an error now appears Site Error An error was encountered while publishing this resource. AttributeError Sorry, a site error occurred. § if we refresh the page the site then loads correctly, (cleared cache etc) for the setup we have - which maps to the folder web/support/thehatchery/ahome/ on my.sund.etc <VirtualHost xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx> Servername thehatchery.sunderland.ac.uk RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://my.sunderland.ac.uk/VirtualHostBase/http/thehatchery.s underland.ac.uk/web/support/thehatchery/VirtualHostRoot/$1 [L,P] ErrorLog /usr/local/apache2/logs/thehatchery_error_log TransferLog /usr/local/apache2/logs/thehatchery_access_log ProxyVia on </VirtualHost> i assume it's above that is at fault but cannot figure it out? do i need to add a virtual host monster etc and if so what is the correct way? thanks for your help ---- Dean Hale Web Development Manager Information Services 0191 515 2424

slow python scripts
by D. Rick Anderson 19 Oct '03

19 Oct '03

I have a few python scripts that are parsing 4000+ record CSV files, and they are DOG slow. They take over 140 seconds to complete (that's an eternity to wait for a web page to load). What's driving me nuts is that the same code, in a straight python file, fires off and completes in under 2 seconds using the same CSV file. How can I speed up the Python script on my server? Are external methods faster? TIA Rick

serious memory leak?
by Dylan Reinhardt 19 Oct '03

Hi all, I've got a Zope instance that uses a custom product to store a couple MB of data. When the object is created, it loads up a bunch of data from the filesystem and pretty much just stores it statically. Creating an instance of this object appears to cause no major drag on Zope... while dormant, this zope instance uses 0.1 of available memory. Making a request against the object briefly spikes usage to ~3%. Over the course of 2-3 days, however this zope instance grows to consume > 90% of available memory which is obviously a problem. This is on a server with 2 GB of RAM running little besides zope and apache. Restarting this zope instance successfully re-sets memory usage. Several other long-running zope instances on this box don't seem to be having any trouble at all. I'm guessing this is somehow my fault, but I'm having trouble reproducing the problem so it's tough to say what's going wrong. Can anyone suggest what kinds of things I should be taking a closer look at in order to track this down? If it matters, I'm using 2.6.1 on Gentoo, keeping the ZODB well-packed (~3 MB) and I'm using FileStorage. I'm not using TALES. Thanks in advance, Dylan

trouble uninstalling placeless translation service
by Russell Uman 19 Oct '03

19 Oct '03

howdy. i'm running zope 2.6.1 with ZEO. i attempted to install PlacelessTranslationService for use in a plone/CMF site, and then gave up after deciding that it was too painful to get PlacelessTranslationService working with 2.6.1. However, even after removing the Product, i still see the placeless translation service tool (broken, of course) in my control panel with the title: "This object from the PlacelessTranslationService product is broken!" and, when i restart zope i see the following in the debug.log: 2003-10-14T11:28:39 PROBLEM(100) ZODB Could not import class 'PlacelessTranslationService' from module 'Products.PlacelessTranslationService.\ PlacelessTranslationService' i have some reason to believe that this left over, broken PTS is interfering with some other work i am trying to do. how can i clean up this broken installation? there's no way that i can see to delete the tool from the control panel. i'm pretty sure that the control panel is the only place that PTS exists. if i grep for PTS in InstanceHome, only Data.fs matches... thanks! -- russell uman viz llc web and database programmer

WTF is a monkeypatch?
by John Coleman 19 Oct '03

I am trying to resolve some Oracle issues with ZopeProfiler, but it's a "monkey patch" with no instructions on installing it. I've searched this mailing list and the zope.org website high and low for instructions on installing a "monkey patch," but I'll be damned if I can find them. Can someone offer assistance? Thanks John

ZODB size limitations?
by nwingfield＠che-llp.com 19 Oct '03

19 Oct '03

In an effort to put our Zope-based system into production, I ran an import script to pull in historical data external to Zope. At this point we are experiencing some very strange behaviors - seemingly related to traversal of the object tree - that did not occur prior to the import. At this point we have close to 150,000 objects, each containing a handful of metadata and nothing more. A large number of these are folderish. I expect this database to grow much larger in a very short time, providing it does not die a premature death. Our file system is Reiser FS and our ZODB is running on DirectoryStorage, rather than the Data.fs file. I worry that we're pushing Zope beyond its capabilities with this number of objects, but I don't really know. Does anyone have experience with databases of this size? Any ideas on limitations to number of objects the ZODB can comfortably manage, or the size to which the ZODB can comfortably grow?

Problem with Apache 2 and Zope 2.7
by Florian Lindner 19 Oct '03

19 Oct '03

Hello, I try to setup a Apache and Zope configuration using RewriteRules. The Zope Server is bound to the IP 127.0.0.1. I've used these expressions inside a VirtualHost block of http.conf. As a first step they should redirect all requests to the VirtualHost to the Zope server: RewriteEngine On RewriteLog "/var/log/httpd/rewrite.log" RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://localhost:8080/$1 [L,P] The client web-browser says: 403 Forbidden Forbidden You don't have permission to access /manage on this server. Apache/2.0.47 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.47 OpenSSL/0.9.6g PHP/4.3.2 Server at centershock.net Port 80 When accessing it with http://centershock.net:8080/manage it works perfect. What's wrong? Thanks, Florian This is a output of the rewrite.log 217.86.12.38 - - [14/Oct/2003:15:43:18 +0200] [centershock.net/sid#811e570] [rid#823aa58/initial] (2) init rewrite engine with requested uri /manage 217.86.12.38 - - [14/Oct/2003:15:43:18 +0200] [centershock.net/sid#811e570] [rid#823aa58/initial] (2) rewrite /manage -> http://localhost:8080/manage 217.86.12.38 - - [14/Oct/2003:15:43:18 +0200] [centershock.net/sid#811e570] [rid#823aa58/initial] (2) forcing proxy-throughput with http:// localhost:8080/manage This is a part of netstat -l: Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 *:http-alt *:* LISTEN Zope is listening.
