__before_publishing_traverse__: VHM put into TraversalRequestNameStack
by Tobias Herp 23 Sep '03

23 Sep '03

Hi, you all, I'm running several virtual hosts (Zope 2.6.2) behind an Apache. When I access a virtual host, the __before_publishing_traverse__ method of my site class sees a slash and the VirtualHostMonster on the top of the TraversalRequestNameStack (indexes -2 and -1). Is this a bug, or is it a feature I should rely on? Thanks, Tobias

MySQLDA, Mac OSX connection problem
by Avni Khatri 23 Sep '03

Hi, I'm new to zope / plone. I was wondering if someone could help me out. - I installed plone on mac osx (using the binary) and everything works great. - I then wanted to connect to an RDBMS. So I installed mysql on the same box (osx) and that works great. I gave my db root user a password and set up the permissions. - I then installed mysql-python package and that seemed to go well. - I next installed ZMySQLDA by putting it in the the zope python dir and restarted zope - The product shows up. Ican add a "Z MySQL Database Connection" object type no problem. It says the connection is open. - However when I try the "Test" tab, the resulting page always has the following error: _mysql_exceptions.InternalError Sorry, a site error occurred. Traceback (innermost last): Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 150, in publish_module Module Products.Localizer, line 58, in new_publish Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 106, in publish Module Zope.App.startup, line 222, in abort Module ZODB.Transaction, line 135, in abort Module Shared.DC.ZRDB.TM, line 60, in abort Module Products.ZMySQLDA.db, line 328, in _abort InternalError: (-1, 'connection is closed') - My connection string is db@ip username password which all the docs say is correct? Am I missing something? I am running Plone 1.0.5, Zope 2.6.2b5, Mac OS 10.2.6, MySQL 4.0.15 Does anyone have any ideas / suggestions? I've perused the mailing lists and web sites and haven't been able to find a solution that works. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks much, Avni __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Carsten - > 1) Should Equipment and SparePart be classes or perhaps instead tables in my > RDBMS? (ATM they are classes to facilitate the history/undo functionality in > Zope) I have found Zope's undo feature to be highly unreliable. Just perform a couple operations in sequence, then try to undo the first operation. In my experience Zope throws up its hands and says "I forgot where I put that..." If you want this feature you'll have to do it yourself. > 2) Should I make it all as classes (including the Log)? My only suggestion would be to use either RDBMS or ZODB exclusively. Suppose it comes time to restore from backups. How will you know if your ZODB backups are in sync with your SQL backups? It could be tricky. > 3) How do you make relations between objects in Zope? (For use in eg. > reporting) Check out the ZCatalog. For heavy duty reporting, though, you can't beat relational databases. One final remark on classes: using the ZODB gives you a lot more flexibility in modeling physical objects (Equipment, Spare Parts). If I were to use Zope classes, I would try to create a class that is far more flexible, perhaps an "Inventory" class that can behave as any type of inventory. I might even create an "Inventory Type" class that contains information about the various inventory types (maybe the TV people can even add their own inventory types with some well-designed web methods). If you think in terms of a theatre production, you could treat these two classes as actor and director. There may be lots of actors in a production, but only one director (at the root) that tells each actor how to behave depending on their role they have been assigned. I've used this model very effectively in my own development. - Nathaniel

Newbie alert
by Michael Shanahan 23 Sep '03

Ho folks, golly, I honestly hate doing this so please forgive my apparent arrogance in that my first post is a cry for help. I recently installed Plone, Zope latest releases on a Linux server in front of Apache. Nothing fancy, an almost out of the box installation. All seemed to be working fine until yesterday when everything stopped. I have shell access to the linux box and have tried the following: ./stop ./start -D which produces no errors. Yet. When I attempt to open my zope site or ZMI from within a browser, the browser appears to start loading the site and eventually stops after some considerable time. If anyone can point me in the direction of a starting point then I'd be so deeply grateful. Aside... I've worked as a database programmer for many years and realise how pathetic my problem must seem so please forgive me. Many thanks, Regards, Michael

use traversed subpath to insert REQUEST variables
by Tobias Herp 23 Sep '03

23 Sep '03

Hi, you all, I have a quite large Python product which publishes (possibly multi-language) pages based on layouts which are chosen based on the user agent. Unfortunately this doesn't cache very well, and there is a lot of REQUEST fiddling during the page computation. So my idea is to put the language and layout information into the URL, e.g. www.my-site.com/en/default/home/ for the english version of the '/home' page, using the 'default' layout, and add the REQUEST variables which are set internally during traversal to the key variables used by the RAM cache manager. I reckon I need to write a __bobo_traverse__ method for my site class (in this example, rewritten to the virtual host www.my-site.com) and return the 'home' page, inserting the appropriate REQUEST variables. Is there a How-To anywhere concerning this? Thanks in advance, Tobias

z2 startup exception

Hello, i' ve some trouble by the migration from zope version 2.4.4 to 2.6.2. I use python 2.2 and a "Instance_Home" configuration. After Installing and compiling Zope with python2.2 it works well in the default-environment. In the context of Instance-Home a z2-startup exception appears with the following traceback: 2003-09-22T15:04:13 PANIC(300) z2 Startup exception Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/local/opt/Zope/server/Zope-2.6.2-src/z2.py, line 585, in ? TranslationService and charset
by Gilles Lenfant 22 Sep '03

22 Sep '03

Hi, I use the translation_service object from a Plone Python product to get the translaltion of texts with this method... def translate(text) ts = getattr(self, 'translation_service', None) if not ts: return text translated = ts.translate('newsletter', text) if not translated: return text else: return translated It works but returns the translated text in the original charset (ascii, latin1, ...) from the MessageCatalog and not in my plone publishing charset (utf-8). I need to know the charset used in the associated MessageCatalog object to recode that translated text into the plone publishing charset. There's certainly a way to do this because Plone recodes all that comes from a MessageCatalog through a TranslationService into the Plone publishing charset, but I'm stucked hacking TranslationService and Localizer code ! Any hint including RTFM welcome Cheers --Gilles
