Performance Hit

Hi; I want to call parts of the "pages" Zope serves from a MySQL database. My programmer tells me there would be a performance hit. I have a hard time understanding why (or if there is, I think it would be small). After all, Zope itself calls everything from a database (ZODB) and all of this activity would be server-side. There will be nothing complicated in the call: four simultaneous calls per page served. Is this problematic? TIA, beno

Well, I can inject a reply to that part -- such a product would allow python code that actually looks like real python (e.g. with function definitions). It also seems likely that it could byte-compile better as a result. You can at present write a script that defines functions, but the downside is that they are defined each time you run the script! (Because they're really nested functions, since they run inside of what ultimately is the body of a function). It might well encourage more use of python for logic without having to go to the step of creating specialized products. Caching Results of External PageTemplateFiles

All the documentation on Caching I can find seems to relate to objects that can be found through the Zope Managment Interface. I would like to cache the results of calls to specific PageTemplates that are stored on the file system as part of an external python product. Any ideas? Links to info? --Sean

inheriting from an Image object

When I make a ZClass that inherits from an image object and I make one instance. The instance doesn't have the "add" form of Image by default. Should it? I think it should. Am I doing something wrong? Daniel

Authentication questions

Hi listers, I'm currently discussing requirements for yet another Zope/Plone portal for the company that I'm working for; and the issues with this particular site include mixing accounts from both internal employees and external consultants. Not all employees will have access to this site. The internal staff are currently authenticated via Windows (and Active Directory accounts) which is a critical requirement. The external folks will only be accessing this one site, so their accounts are very site-specific. What is the most logical way to have both specific AD accounts (not the whole directory) and Zope user accounts authenticate for one site? -- Mitch

For instance, I might have a menu defined in a dtml-method, a navigation bar in a dtml-method and an article in a dtml-document. Those might all be in a folder, with an index_html to wrap them up in to a complete page. So, maybe my search should only return index_html page hits... except that (of course) I have some exceptions to that rule :o) Or maybe each article needs to have some metadata which tells how it should be accessed. Probably I need to rethink the whole structure of the site with cataloging in mind.
