Woha, that's news to me ! Thanks ! Seems to be the most straight forward way to work arond this is to use -i option ... Though I suspect the 2.4 kernel, and maybe 2.6, might have ways to bind to specific CPU's ... Something to keep in mind anyways. I'm curious, why pystones / 50 ? My machine is a 4 CPU, do I still use 50 ? Also, my pystones/50 is 156, which, from reading what i could find on the topic, is low (Default Zope is 500, Plone talks about 750). Mind you the server as a whole isn't very busy (Linux's procinfo says 85% idle!) Is this right ? Also, should pystones be run on an idle system ? Does it matter ? Thanks to this, I've now discovered the -O option, which I've already put into use, we'll see if that improves things. Thanks again for the eye opener ... Bart, The machine you have listed below would EASILY handle 1,000,000 hits a day. If you are worried about it, try some benchmarks using Apache Bench (ab). Here are some VERY old ones I did.. http://www.zope.org/Members/BwanaZulia/benchmarks.html Basically, your machine should easily be able to handle 50-100 requests per second and there are a ton of things you can do to offload the work from Zope if you are looking for raw speed... - Have images/files served up by Apache (lets Zope do what it does best) - Use Zope internal RAM Cache on things that are highly dynamic - Use a proxy server (like Squid) for offsite caching Good luck. editing docs via ftp (emacs)
by Rob Nikander 31 Jul '03

31 Jul '03

Hi all, I am new to Zope and would like to edit my DTML and Python using emacs. I have figured out how to FTP the document to the Zope server (this is documented in several places: you visit file /user@host#port/...), but what I can't figure out is how to create different "types" of files and objects. For example, if I create a "page template" or "dtml method" in the Zope web interface, and then edit and save the file in emacs (through FTP) it changes the file to a DTML Document. Basically everything I touch with Emacs/FTP becomes a DTML document. The "Zope Book" online talks about FTPing to the url of your template + "/source.html", but that has not worked -- I get FTP errors that the template file is not a directory. Any pointers? Thanks, Rob

strange unicode behaviour
by Giuseppe Bonelli 31 Jul '03

31 Jul '03

I have spent the last 30 minutes going crazy with this: in dtml: <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8"> </head> <dtml-call "getText()")> </html> in python: def getText(): s=u'a string with some accented chars' s=s.encode('utf-8') return s the above works fine, but return s.lower() does not !!! (the accented chars are badly rendered in the browser). Can someone, please, explain this to me?? I am on zope 2.6.1 (installed from binaries under win), >From the python console everithing is OK, so there should be something with Zope. I have utf-8 as sys.defaultencoding and I do not load any locale when starting Zope. Thanks for any help, --peppo

modifying dtml-tree
by Paul Williams 31 Jul '03

31 Jul '03

Hi all, I am currently building an application for managing and tracking assets. As part of this I am using a dtml-tree based menu system. All of the functionality is within subfolders, ordered by area of activity. Eg: app / search / by dept by asset type by location modify / add asset add type ... All of the above listed are folders. when I use a dtml-tree, the expand + icons allow one to expand the menu, but clicking on the folder associated (ie search) takes you to the search folder. Since this contains nothing but folders I want it to behave like the + or - icons. I seem to remember reading somewhere that someone had done this, but a reacent search via google, the zope site, etc has turned up a blank. I found the original link by accident and I have forgotten what I was looking for at the time so I cannot replicate this search. Has anyone seen something similar, or would anyone have any pointers if I need to modify the TreeTag.py source file. I would quite like to do the latter, but it is rather daunting for a first hack :-) Any help or pointers appreciated Paul

ZCatalog for Zope 2.6.1
by Tom P. Allred 31 Jul '03

31 Jul '03

Hi, I've just started playing with ZCatalog in Zope 2.6.1 and have followed the tutorial in the online 2.6 edition of The Book successfully to the point of creating a keyword index that returns the correct number of data_record_id_s for my query keywords for various indexes on File objects I'm storing data in as Properties. I've also read a couple of online ZCatalog tutorials, most of which were based on DTML and earlier versions. It looks like ZCatalog will work fine for my small data requirements but I need to register in the catalog my (data) File objects when I create them and when their Properties are changed. I understand I can use ZClasses to create data objects that are CatalogAware and that Products can also be created with that attribute and then I could create my data objects from those. I'll look into those ideas (and suggested Products like Abracadabra, Archetypes and mxm Easy Product) but for now I'd settle for a way to invoke a ZCatalog Find/ReIndex programmatically via python in my user add and update programs. That way I could at least finish my prototyping without getting into the things mentioned above. Unfortunately I haven't found an example of how to do what I'd like. Can someone please provide one?
