Zope Search :: Looking for owners of Marketing Shops and Design/Creative Shops
by Trevor Toenjes 04 Feb '03

04 Feb '03

This email is meant for those of us who dont have the luxury of developing Zope all day, and have to spend much of our time tending the store (to pay the bills). If you own or manage a small company that does creative-design/marketing and uses Zope for web(with some CMS functions) and communications(email/CRM), if you have less than 15 full-time employees or a one man army, average contracts are less than $60,000, responsible for marketing functions, responsible for revenue, ...making it up as you go, wish there was more business and marketing chatter about using Zope, LOVES ZOPE and ZPT! and consequently would like to give back to the community(if there was more time in the day.) Then I want to talk to you. We all have strategic and biz-dev responsibilities and often have nearly identical requirements for infrastructure and products...and project management...etc Please email me if you are interested in working smarter, not harder. I want to connect with peers to address Zope/Open-Source business development issues. ...now back to the previously scheduled program. Cheers, Trevor Toenjes President Growth Labs

Re: [Zope] checking existance of an url?

According to the zope book 2.6 you can also check for the existence of an object with the following python script, where "updateInfo" is the object you are looking for: updateInfo = getattr(context, "updateInfo", None) if updateInfo is not None: updateInfo(color="brown", pattern="spotted") else: # complain about missing script hth, Mike > On Mon, 03 Feb 2003 17:56:03 +0100 > "Stefan H. This sounds like path would have to be a relative path and not a full URL. checking existance of an url?
by Ralph Gauges 04 Feb '03

04 Feb '03

Hi, I am trying to write a little python script that checks if a certain URL exists on the server. So what the script gets is the URL as a string, but so far I have not been able to find a way to check if the corresponding objects exists short of using urllib. Is there an easy way of doing this? I have been looking through all kinds of documentation, but found nothing so far. Thanks Ralph

I do not know any product in Zope that would do that for you. The difficult part is not inside Zope. You will need interfaces between the Zope based intranet application and all your severs, unless the servers themselves are intranet based and sufficiently customizable that they can hook into an SSO scheme. Carefully look at the commercial portals and the services they support (out of the box). I expect much integration work also for commercial portals that claim to handle that seemlessly... Dieter

marshalling list arguments
by Eugen Nedelcu 04 Feb '03

04 Feb '03

Hi, I have this python script: ## Script (Python) "edit_wrapper" ##bind container=container ##bind context=context ##bind namespace= ##bind script=script ##bind subpath=traverse_subpath ##parameters=list_argument ##title= ## REQUEST.RESPONSE.redirect('edit_records?list_argument=%s' % list_argument) When I try to use list_argument in edit_records I find that is not a list as it should be. In the python script it is a list but when is passed to edit_records it becomes a string. I've tried to pass the argument like list_argument:list but that is rendered in edit_records like ["[.....]"](a list with one string element). Any help is welcomed. TNX. -- ICQ: 165549179

XMLDocument
by Einar Næss Jensen 04 Feb '03

04 Feb '03

I am using the product XMLKit and its XMLDocument and XMLproxy. (have tried ParsedXML, but it doesn't seem to display my norwegian characters and I don't have time to look into that matter). XMLproxy works just the way i want it. now, inside this xml there is a few lines i want to extract: <CELL ROWSPAN="1" COLSPAN="1"> <emnekode>hfmv302 <A ID="pgfId-999230" /> </emnekode> </CELL> What i want from this is: <a href="some_url#pgfid-999230">hfmv302</a> when i add "emnekode" to the entities to view, nothing happens. However, if <A> contains data i may extract this by calling <dtml-var A> at the opening tag. I am puzzeled. First of all i would very much apreciate if somone could point me to any documentation on XMLKit. second: if somone understand what i want from the above text, maybe could tell me if I am on the right track when trying to extract data from the xml-document. Are there other ways to do this? how? Thanks to everyone who have answered my recent postings. Einar -- Einar Næss Jensen Avdelingsingeniør EDB-HF 735 90750

What am I missing? Almost surely, this code is in a DTML Document (rather than DTML Method). For some unknown (stupid) reason the base class of most Zope object classes ("OFS.SimpleItem.SimpleItem") defines Object Manager methods (such as those used by "dtml-tree"). Of course, these methods cannot return useful results. DTML Document looks first in its local namespace (and finds the bad Object Manager methods); only then it looks in the namespace defined by its context. DTML Method looks only in the namespace defined by its context. As a general rule: do not use DTML Document -- unless you know precisely what you are doing. RE: [Zope] Memory leak
by Jean-Francois.Doyon＠CCRS.NRCan.gc.ca 04 Feb '03

04 Feb '03

Mark, I've also been struggling with Memory Leaks in Zope, and not having much luck with it either. The behavior was much the same as yours, only over a longer period of time (My Zope will last up to 8 or 10 days). I'm using 2.5.1 however. First thing I would recommend would be to install the LeakFinder product. It was instrumental in my finding more about my leak. Looks like the LeakFinder, somehow imporves the refcount, and after installing it, you may get better refcounts that will give you a clue of what's going on. In my case, where the DateTime refcounts never were a problem before, with LeakFinder, I learned that I was leaking DateTime objects through lost references it seems. I'm also pretty sure it's got something to do with the ZCatalog, since it's the one that instantiates these most. You may have been reading my previous e-mails. In my case though I think it's got to do with the searching, not the indexing. As far the request.set, apparently that's an "old" issue that probably is no longer, but I removed them as best I could from my code ... didn't change much anyways. This was due to concerns with the fact that the request object is so intensively used and passed around internally, keep track of references may have been a problem at some point. Right now I've got my eyes on this piece of code: from random import choice selecteditem = choice(context.portal_catalog.searchResults( meta_type='Featured Item', includeinrotation = '1', review_state='published')) return selecteditem Which I could see how it might loose references if not done right, I'll be running tests on this soon. This type of behavior seems to be experienced by a range of people with various apparent causes ... It would be nice if we could put our heads together on this. Anyways, sorry, I got carried away :) First: Setup LeakFinder :) Cheers, J.F. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Thomas [mailto:markt@kooee.com.au] Sent: Monday, February 03, 2003 8:43 PM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] Memory leak I'm having some pretty severe problems with memory leaks, where the memory usage on my server is growing rapidly, then crashing Zope (every 2 days or so). When Zope crashes, it often restarts itself which isn't too bad if this was all that is required to get all services up and running again. However, I have to manually re-create a 'transient object container' in the temp_folder every time Zope is restarted. Also, when Zope goes down (or the memory is all taken up) it often takes out other services which don't automatically restart, such as ssh, telnet, mail etc. Obviously, the real answer is to stop the memory leak in the first place, so that Zope never has to be restarted. I'm running Python 2.1.3 and Zope 2.6.0 and I've read and followed much of the advice given on this mailing list re: memory leaks. For instance, I've set ZOPE_SECURITY_POLICY=3DPYTHON in my Zope startup script and checked the reference counts for various things, but can't spot anything that might be a problem. I also saw a 'memory leak possible solved' message which talked about indexing catalogs as being a problem. However, this didn't solve my problem. In my python scripts I often use request.set and session.set commands, and I read that they may be causing problems. I use these functions to pass variables between python scripts and dtml methods or other python scripts. I sort of understand why using these functions may be a problem - because there is nothing to clean them up once sessions are closed? What is the better way to pass variables around? Any help would be greatly appreciated, the mailing list seems to be running out of ideas on this topic. Thanks in advance. _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )
