I've redirected this to zope(a)zope.org, since I think deployment topics are more likely to generate a good discussion there. My take: Load-balancing: Use squid and ICP support in Zope 2.6 to load balance. Consider using directory storage for your backend storage because backup and replication of your ZEO storage server's storages (for high-availability clustering) can be done with standard Unix command-line tools. Hardware: depends on what you are trying to do; for ZEO clients: lots of low-end dense 1CPU app servers (blade servers), or 2CPU AMD boxes with plenty of ram running two Zope instances bound to each CPU (assumes CPU affinity is possible in your OS)...both setups might work. Caching: cache what you can with Squid, and if you can, tune your ZEO clientstorage connection cache to fit your needs. If a lot of pages on your site are cacheable, cache them in Squid, which has more tunable caching than Apache. There is no one-size-fits all answer for hardware, unfortunately. Questions worth asking: - Do you need physical density (do you rent rackspace at a premium)? - How cacheable (at the page level) are your applications? News delivery is very cacheable, but personalized ecommerce sites are not. - How much content are you going to store in the object database? - How CPU intensive are your applications? How memory intensive? - How much traffic do you expect to see to your site? - What particular processes are very intensive, and how do you think you want to partition them? Think about things like bulk reindexing or adding of content, etc. I'll give you my thoughts if you have more specific answers to some of these questions... [Using Zope 2.6 final on Red Hat 7.3 with Python 2.1.3] I have a CMF portal type that's implemented as a Zope Product. I need to make a fairly complicated report for published content of this type. My basic approach is to take the portal_catalog.searchResults and stuff them into a Python class that provides access to the results in a way that facilitates the report. Where I'm stuck is that I just don't know how to get at that Python class from the Page Template where I do the report. I'm happy to provide as many details as possible, but I'm hoping at first to sketch the broad outlines of what I've tried, since I think what I'm missing is some basic understanding of the security model--that seems to be the particular wall I'm running into... I have a Python class that does not need to persist. I call it a DisplayBag. It sits in a module in the same folder as the portal type: PressRelease/ __init__.py DisplayBag.py PressRelease.py --> the portal_type DisplayBag.py looks like this: from AccessControl import ClassSecurityInfo from Acquisition import Implicit import Globals class DisplayBag(Implicit) security = ClassSecurityInfo() security.declareObjectPublic() def __init__(self, ...): # nothing really special security.declarePublic('years') def years(self): # nothing really special # other methods, similar to years, nothing really special Globals.InitializeClass(DisplayBag) The current hack I use to "get at" DisplayBag is with a method tacked onto the PressRelease class. (I've tried getting at the DisplayBag from an external method. What this does is gets the published Press Releases and then, hackishly, takes the first one (so I have a PressRelease on which to call make_bag), do getObject() on it since searchResults doesn't give me the object, and call make_bag. I get the DisplayBag just fine--I've used tal:content="results" ('results' is the bag) to display it. The reason I felt I needed to make the DisplayBag class and not just do all the stuff it's doing either in Python Scripts or TAL is that--well--it seems like it will be easier to test and maintain. I could have a profusion of scripts in the skins folder that effectively do the same thing. And I'd probably already be done, but I'd really like to figure this out. Custom authentication that avoids login screens

Hi I have been pestering the good folks on #zope about this, as well as trying to ask in here a couple of times, but I'm not getting anywhere, and worse, I don't think people get what I am trying to do although it seems simple: Our site is served by Zope, as well as PHP and Perl - the entry point is in PHP - i.e. login screens, general stuff. By the time someone gets to the Zope pages, they should be already logged in. I've looked at both exUserFolder and SimpleUserFolder, but I still cannot see how to intercept the request before the UF presents the user with a login screen / HTTP basic auth dialog. The PHP part of the site will have set a cookie - in Zope I need to look for this cookie, and then use it as a key in our RDBMS to check whether or not to allow the user to proceed. If there's no cookie or the user is not authorized, I need to bounce them back to the PHP-based login system. TheJester suggested looking at remoteAuthMethod in exUF, but this method is called too late in the chain of events. Am I really not making sense? Anyone shed any light on this? TIA, Felix.

Python classes properties.

Hello, I am using python classes to for my Zope product. How do i add one more property sheet to my python class. I add the first one using the following code: _properties=({'id':'title', 'type': 'string', 'mode': 'w'}, {'id':'color', 'type': 'string', 'mode': 'w'}, ) Since i already have about 25 properties on this property. i want to add another property sheet as we do in ZOPE ZClass. naveen

AttributeError: sendall when using ftplib with Zope 2.5.1

The ftplib that came with my Zope 2.5.1 win32 is giving an error on socket's sendall method. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, or is it a bug in this particular version or my installation? Thanks. Catalog addIndex Error

Hi; I tried to install a product called EMarket when I ran into this error )upon trying to set up EMarket from the eMarketAdd.dtml page): Error Type: TypeError Error Value: Catalog addIndex now requires the index type to be resolved prior to adding; create the proper index in the caller. There is this line of code from addEMarket(): newMainF.Catalog._catalog.addIndex('isAvailable','FieldIndex') Clearly, by this point addEMarket() has been called, therefore, why is this not sufficient? beno

Data object timeout value

I have noticed that the Data object timeout value in the Transient Object Container seems to reset itself to the default value of 20 minutes each time Zope is restarted. The Zope version is (Zope 2.5.1 (binary release, python 2.1, linux2-x86), python 2.1.3, linux2) and python is 2.1.3 (#1, Apr 15 2002, 11:13:45) [GCC 2.7.2.3] . Has anyone else seen this behavior and is there a way to make this value sticky? I don't want to have to go in and change it each time we restart Zope. I have multiple site which use session tracking and this starting to cause frequent session timeouts in some of them. TIA, Bob Corriher P-Wave Inc.
