Hi all, The excellent way of sending email via python outlined at http://www.zopelabs.com/cookbook/991178206 (reproduced here for completeness) try: mailhost=getattr(context, context.superValues('Mail Host')[0].id) except: raise AttributeError, "cant find a Mail Host object" mMsg = 'a testful email message \n that contains a few line breaks. \n ~runyaga' mTo = 'runyaga(a)abc.com' mFrom = 'runyaga(a)xyz.com' mSubj = 'mail subject' mailhost.send(mMsg, mTo, mFrom, mSubj) Doesn't work on 2.6.0. You get the following traceback;  Looking at line 125 of MailHost.py you get this... self._send(mfrom, mto, messageText) Whereas on the 2.5.1 version you get this (after much header manipulations), self._send( headers, messageText ) The interface to 'send' hasn't changed though, def send(self, messageText, mto=None, mfrom=None, subject=None, encode=None): We are (were) using this a lot, sending a large quantity of email using Maildrop Host and some python scripts. Now, these scripts don't work. Can anyone shed some light on this? Many thanks Tone. Ps Lest people think I'm all over 2.6.0 - I really like the 'error_log' feature at the top level. Authentication with cookies instead of browser.

Help please! I'm building a comprehensive education resource based on Zope for my school, and I'm trying to learn Zope internals. We are running Apache 2.0.43 with mod-Perl 5.8.0 and Zope 2.5.1, currently on the same machine. Apache serves some content and uses virtual host and proxy for content in Zope with a VirtualHostMonster. Authentication of protected resources works like this: when a request for a protected resource is received, Apache calls a Perl script to check a special cookie from the user's browser. The cookie has the user name and a hash of several values. If the cookie is absent or invalid, the user is directed to a secure campus server which asks for the user name and password, authenticates it against a Kerberos system, places the cookie and redirects the user back to our site. At that point the Perl script finds a valid cookie and allows access. All of this works perfectly! I can get the cookie in the REQUEST object in Zope. I can populate Zope with users. I would like to use Zope's built in role mechanism for permissions. How can I make Zope get the user name from the cookie instead of from the user's browser? I am happy to subclass existing Python code to make this happen. I assume that Zope sends a WWW-Authenticate response header to the user's browser, but I have not yet been able to find the class that does this, and I have not found this question asked before on the lists. Any knowledge or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Tom Engel

Hallo Liste wieder mal ein kleines Problem ich habe zwei Listen: a= ('chriss','thomas') b= ('chriss','thomas','gustav') jetzt möchte ich nur die werte haben die nicht doppelt in Liste b und b vorkommen!! also c= ('gustav') gibt es hierfür vielleicht eine funktion ??? mfg christian

Disclaimer: I've done both Squid and Apache, though I definitely fall into the Squid camp. Regardless, I'll agree that Squid or Apache in front of Zope is the right way to do things. Either can do URL rewriting; either can have access controls; either can do caching; either can do SSL acceleration. Apache's URL rewriting is faster (in-process), while Squid's is much more flexible (external helper, I use pyredir: http://freshmeat.net/projects/pyredir - which is in Python, and has simple enough config file rules that put Apache rewrite rules to shame). Apache has strength in support for transfer encodings (mod_gzip); Squid does not. The problem with transfer encoding is that it doesn't usually play well with cached content. It also really is only a benefit for text, since images are usually well-compressed already. This might be good for an e-commerce site. Squid has faster and more tunable caching. This takes load off the app servers better. Given the performance characteristics of the above two statements, which I believe to be true, I would make the following recommendation: If you are running a site with lots of cacheable content (semi-dynamic, like a news site), use Squid. If you are running an e-commerce site, use Apache, and get the benefits of transfer encoding on your dynamic textual pages that are not likely cacheable. why run apache in front of zope?

This may be an obvious question to many, but not to me... why do so many people run Zope behind an Apache server? What are the benefits of an Apache server, or otherwise, what are the limitations of the Zope web server? I currently run Zope alone and am evaluating the benefits of use Apache. Thanks. I can't figure out what attributes "item" has. The dir() builtin isn't exposed as far as I can tell. I've been wandering all over the Zope Book for about 20 minutes and have so far been unable to find the attributes associated with the "item" object. Where should I be looking? In theory, if you are not dependent upon use of ZODB versions, consideration of DirectoryStorage may be warranted: it has a 'snapshot' mode that defers new transactions to a temporary holding directory while the main directories containing objects are frozen, allowing you to use standard Unix backup tools like tar/cpio+find for incremental backup and/or replication. It should be noted that DirectoryStorage also includes a backup.py script that uses the storage to get a list of changed files that will work as a replacement for using the 'find' command. A temporary workaround is easy enough: view the traceback in an error log item (new to 2.6) and comment out the offending line of code in the Squishdot product. I can't remember which line in which file, but it is the one that tries to delete the 'summary' metadata entry (I think this is line 155 in SquishSite.py). Either that, or wrap this in try/except (which is what I did). This should be enough to get Squishdot running with Zope 2.6.0 (I only tested a while back in Zope 2.6a, though).
