Database Adapter for ODBC Socket Server
by Marc Roland 25 Oct '02

25 Oct '02

Hello, does anyone know if somebody has written a Zope Database Adapter for the ODBC Socket Server ? http://sourceforge.net/projects/odbc/ The ODBC Socket Server is a very good and simple way to build multi tier database applications, where the communication flies via XML over the net. I've a running Solaris/Apache/PHP-Server which talks via the ODBC Socket Server to a Win2000/Access2000-Server. And it's free (open-source) :-) Regards, Marc Roland AICAT CA Technologies GmbH Dipl.-Ing.(FH) System Consultant Friedrich-Karl-Str. 101-103 Fon:+49/(0)221/971445-30 Fax:-5 Germany-50735 Koeln (Niehl)

Event and Scheduler question
by Derek Basch 25 Oct '02

25 Oct '02

Hello, I have spent the last few days tyring to work with the Event and Schedule Products from the CVS tree: http://cvs.zope.org/Products/Scheduler/ http://cvs.zope.org/Products/Event/ I haven't had much luck finding any documentation or examples. I can add Event objects ok but I get an AttributeError when I try to add a Scheduler obect: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: portal_events Rather than wander aimlessly through the source I thought I would ask, does anyone has experience with these products? Feel like helping a newbie? Thanks, Derek Basch __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Y! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your web site http://webhosting.yahoo.com/

Help -- I migrated Data.fs and my administrator was lost
by Bryan Capitano 25 Oct '02

25 Oct '02

Hello, I am trying to migrate a Linux installation of Zope to Windows but seem to have lost the administrator login in the process. Can anybody help? 1. Installed Windows version from www.zope.org through their .exe installation package. This asked me to pick a login/password combo. I chose the same one I have on Linux (easy to remember). 2. Fired up Zope to make sure it works. It does. 3. Installed all the same products onto Windows Zope as I have in my existing Linux installation. 4. Fired up Zope to confirm new products installed correctly. A-Okay so far. 5. Copy %ZOPE-DISTRIBUTION-PATH%/var/Data.fs from Linux to C:\Program Files\Zope\var\Data.fs 6. Fired up Zope to confirm everything is working. BLOG, CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE, ahEM: I cannot login.... Zope does not recognize my login/password anymore (even though I chose same login/pass on LInux as I did on my new Windows install). Tried to use zpasswd.py to change my password on Windows but I cannot CD into C:\Program Files\zope\ (DOS gives me errors about CD'ing into a directory with spaces in the name.) I'm stuck. Thanks for any help, Bryan

Problems with restarts, memory usage, DB connections, FastCGI ?? Help!
by Jean-Francois.Doyon＠CCRS.NRCan.gc.ca 24 Oct '02

24 Oct '02

Hello, I'm having some problems with my main Zope installation that I'm hoping someone could shed some light on. My nowledge of Zope internals is too limited for me to figure it out by myself right now :) I have a Zope 2.5.0 (With various products) , running on a custom (But default build) Python 2.1.3 on a RedHat 7.3 ... The machine has a 1GB Ram. I use Apache+FastCGI+Squid. The symptoms of the problem are as such: Every once in a while, zope stops responding for a few minutes ... Sometimes it comes back on it's own, sometimes it takes too long and I restart it manually. So far I've been unable to track down WHY. One thing I finally noticed, is that when Zope seems "hung", if I restart Apache, the number of "httpd" processes starts normal, but then keep growing steadily. Once I restart zope, things settle down. So it would seem that the Apache<->Zope connection is suffering of "blocking" one some level. So now I'm wondering why this locking might happen. First there's these 4 database connections. What happens if these stay "full" for too long ? Could THAT be it ? I also have an application inside Zope that has a user upload LARGE images (severa megs at least , up to 12 or 13 megs) through Zope. I f I understand things correctly, the entire image is loaded into memory before being written to disk. Does this activity lock a database ? Could heavy usage of this process be growing memory usage beyond anything reasonable ? One thing that also happened just once was that the entire server ended up running out of memory! Last week, I got kernel messages about the processes being out of memory. I couldn't even log-in to the console during this time. After a while though the kernel was good enough to kill the processes, but I had hit ctrl-alt-del, and then it went on to reboot before I had time to look at anything :( This site takes millions of hits per week (Squid took 3.75M last week, with a 40% cache hit ratio). Should I look at using more than 4 DB connections ? I might also be open to using an entirely different setup, such as Apache+ZServer with mod_rewrite and mod_proxy ... This setup would be somewhat simpler and lighter ... would it also be more reliable ? Any insight, opinions, coments, or tips would be greatly appreciated ! xml.sax error
by Oliver Marx 24 Oct '02

24 Oct '02

Dear List On my FreeBSD box I get this error: 'xml.sax.expatreader' module has no attribute 'create_parser' Google tells me that maybe the xml-support is not installed. This seems a bit strange to me since the tranceback is: File /var/zope-sites/Nettalk/Extensions/parse_xml.py, line 325, in parse File /usr/local/lib/python2.1/xml/sax/__init__.py, line 43, in parseString File /usr/local/lib/python2.1/xml/sax/__init__.py, line 76, in make_parser File /usr/local/lib/python2.1/xml/sax/__init__.py, line 101, in _create_parser Any idea what the problem might be? \Oliver

We spent a >lot of time to solve this issue but we came to the point where M$ >violates the WebDAV specs and has an undefined behaviour. Webdrive or Teamdrive is a good solution. My vote for those clients too. On the other hand one solution, if you have a Linux server too, could be to use dav-fs and share that mounted point with Samba. Haven't tested the windows share, but love dav-fs. Oh and since on new redhats the dav-fs is so easy to take into use it is almost criminal ,-) -huima

Thanks, I'll look into that then, as other advantages too ... One thing I just noticed. I use 2 CMF sites under my root (One for each canadian language). When this "hanging" occurs, one CMF site keeps working (French, the less utilized one), while the other one "freezes" ... How could this be ? I remember now having noticed this in the past. Which suggests that maybe this could also be a CMF problem ? Or maybe there are various causes of "freezing" ... (In this case, httpd processes aren't appearing all over the place like I described before ... maybe a similar symptom with a different cause). I'll try the apache+mod_rewrite+mod_proxy see if that helps though ... thanks, J.F. -----Original Message----- From: Dieter Maurer [mailto:dieter@handshake.de] Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 3:12 PM To: Jean-Francois.Doyon(a)CCRS.NRCan.gc.ca Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Problems with restarts, memory usage, DB connections, FastCGI ?? We switched from FastCGI to "mod_rewrite" with "[P]" rewrite rules and the problem disappeared. Dieter
