I have just seen a reference to the Mitch Kapor's new venture. As I have not so far seen it mentioned on the Zope or Python lists, I thought I would post the info here. The venture is the building of an open-source Outlook killer from scratch. More info here: http://www.osafoundation.org/index.htm http://blogs.osafoundation.org/mitch/ Little seems fixed at the moment, but they seem to be committed to Python, ZODB and wxPython. I guess that they are not considerting using Zope directly, or they would have put it in the list of technology, but if this flies, it will have a major effect on the Zope world, I think -- not least on the cataloguing side of things. The planned features are: * POP/IMAP retrieval * HTML viewing and composition * auto-completion of addressees * stationery * signatures * multiple profiles/personalities/identities * spelling checker * auto-archiving of old mail * fast searching via full-text indexing * importing existing data and settings * in-line viewing of attachments * user-defined views, rules, and filters * user-scripting capabilities * "active" mail - mail with buttons for actions * transparent encryption and authentication of mail * automatic Spam filtering * filing of messages in multiple folders Information Sharing & Exchange * integrated Instant Messaging and presence management (Jabber) * sending contacts and appointments via mail (iCal, vCard support) * remote peer-to-peer browsing of others' data * flexible security model to control access * file and document sharing * remote queries, e.g., look up address in another person's contact list * automatic updating of information from remote sources: receive new contacts, changes to existing contacts automatically (publish-subscribe) Access * home and work PC's with complete automatic replication of data * online or offline use with access to all data * synchronize with popular PDA's Calendar * day/week/month views * recurring appointments * see another person's free/busy blocks for scheduling * see another person's calendars as overlays Other * simple Web-style navigation (back, forward, and home buttons, single click on a link to navigate, bookmarks, URL references to user data) * easily customizable user-defined categories * structure data how you like it, view it that way, change your mind at any time * automatic recognition of names, places, dates, and etc.; automatic categorization of items * developer extensibility architecture --- Alastair

Hosting files sitting out in the OS file structure from Zope
by Robert_J_Roberts＠RL.gov 20 Oct '02

I am running: Zope Version (Zope 2.5.1 (binary release, python 2.1, win32-x86), python 2.1.3, win32) Python Version 2.1.3 (#35, Apr 8 2002, 17:47:50) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)] System Platform win32 Can anyone tell me how to host pages via Zope if the pages are not actually internal to the ZODB? I had to install MRTG on our network. MRTG writes out a number of HTML files. It just writes them to a directory sitting on the hard drive of the server. (e.g. c:\mrtg\docs\<somename.html>) I would like to serve those pages with my Zope server. The pages are updated every 5 minutes or so, hence, I am not inclined to sit there FTP'ing them up into Zope as they are created :) I thought I was well on the way to solving the issue by using Apache, mod_rewrite, and SiteBase. Much to my surprise, I ended up with Apache serving Zope content and NOT the other way around. Maybe I did it wrong, but more likely (after re-reading all the documentation) I didn't understand what I was doing in the first place and got it working just like it should, it just wasn't what I wanted. Can anyone tell me how to serve pages out of my file system using Zope while still being able to serve all of my ZODB content? Thanks Robert J. Bug/Problem with Zope 2.6.0b2
by Aaron Optimizer Digulla 20 Oct '02

20 Oct '02

Hello, I've create a small website along these lines: index_html is a DTML which uses various scripts and parts in the current folder. One of these parts is "contentLayout" which is a Python script which in turn reads "contents". This works very well. I get problems when I add subfolders. Example: I add a subfolder "news" which contains the same structure as the Elvis tutorial Step 11: I add a DB connector, a "getNEWS" DTML and then in "contents", I write: <dtml-in getNEWS> <dtml-var date> -- Reported by <dtml-var name> <dtml-var description> <hr> </dtml-in> Unfortunately, when I browse "http://.../test/news", I get KeyError getNEWS The overall layout looks like this: index_html contentLayout contents news/getNEWS news/contents index_html reads contentLayout which reads context.contents. This all seems to work but when "news/contents" is read, "news/getNEWS" is not found. Interestingly enough, when I add a Script "news/test" which contains: return "Test" and change news/contents to: <dtml-var test> then I get no error but a page with my complex layout and the word "Test" at the correct place. Then I tried to replace the DTML news/contents with a Python script and voila: It works! context.getNEWS() returns the desired result. Any ideas? -- ============================================== Sowatec AG, CH-8330 Pfäffikon (ZH) Witzbergstr. 7, http://www.sowatec.com Tel: +41-(0)1-952 55 55 Fax: +41-(0)1-952 55 66 ---------------------------------------------- Aaron "Optimizer" Digulla, digulla(a)sowatec.com ==============================================

Re: Trouble accessing Zope FTP port from XEmacs
by Skip Montanaro 20 Oct '02

Me: If I try to visit /admin@localhost:8021/ from XEmacs it correctly does the little efs dance, however, I always get the error message: *ftp admin@localhost* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n) Some more investigation trying to connect to other ftp servers suggests this is a general problem with XEmacs. I filed a bug report with the XEmacs gang. -- Skip Montanaro - skip(a)pobox.com http://www.mojam.com/ http://www.musi-cal.com/

global name 'localzone' not defined?
by Wankyu Choi 20 Oct '02

20 Oct '02

Hi all, Zope 2.6.0 gives me the following error when setting cookies and stuff that calls DateTime's rfc822(): global name 'localzone' not defined. (in DateTime, line 1441) Indeed 'localzone' is not defined in DateTime.py. Changed the reference to 'timezone' and it works. Is it the way it should work? Or should I do something else? Thanks in advance. Regards, Wankyu Choi

RE: [Zope] Zope products, ZClasses, Database rows, XML or what?
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 19 Oct '02

19 Oct '02

First, IMHO, while the GoF Design Patterns books is one of my favorite recent reads, I think this is a bit of a misdirection for the poster's problem at hand. Zope product development often does not favor idioms of the GoF suggestions, such as favoring composition to inheritance. Frameworks such as the CMF that really attempt to go the extra mile to have smart, component-oriented, pluggable design are a notable exception. Zope 3 experimentation is largely based on interoperating components and compositional patterns. In the long term, I would take the Python product route. The Zope Bible is not a bad read for doing product development, though it is likely the road to getting there will involve some mailing list questions... In the short term, I'd at least use the CMF as a starting point, and even consider ZClasses for your initial prototyping. My approach to this problem domain would start with the CMF and end with hybrid storage patterns, and a few custom content types for the items of a book "catalog." I would then extend those content types with skins that decorate that content using ZSQL methods as skin methods to keep related tabular material in a relational database, keyed off of the path/identifier of the content item in the CMF. In the simplest case, if the book entries themselves are the center of your universe, make them CMF content stored in portal folders in the ODB and add actions/skin-methods around them that decorate them with associated content in an RDB. This may involve using ZClasses as a prototyping tool for CMF content, using the FAQ example on cmf.zope.org as a guide. But once you can create this, the rest of your work in primarily in skins and RDB work (setup databases, do your ZSQL methods, etc), which can be done entirely though the web, with very little need to get into anything really ugly. My $.02: Obviously, whatever you feel comfortable in is going to be the best solution for you. Even so, Zope is clearly the superior choice. :-) If you want to do anything moderately interesting, my very best advice would be to get to work learning Python and start making products. As nice as Zclasses are for getting going quickly, products are where the real power of Zope is. That said, making effective products involves not only understanding Zope, but Python and OO programming. Some books I'd recommend: Learning Python, Mark Lutz Python Standard Library, Fredrick Lundh Design Patterns, Gamma et al. OK, so Design Patterns isn't exactly light reading. But if you really want to see the logic behind how Zope is set up, it's all in there. Zope and Python are very heavily engineered environments and understanding the theory is a great way to get going in them. There are also at least five books on Zope out there, a couple of which give some pretty thorough treatment to products.
