extra parameters in dtml-var
by Andreas Brinner 19 Oct '02

19 Oct '02

Hello, I have searched the internet and the maillinglist, but haven't found any answer. Why is it not possible to pass extra parameters to the called script with <dtml-var ...> in the following way: Example: <dtml-var some_other_dtml_method say="hello"> with some_other_dtml_method: <dtml-if say> I say: <dtml-var say> </dtml-if> O.K. there is the way: <dtml-var expr="some_other_dtml_method( _, REQUEST, say='Hello')"> But in my opinion this is unnessecary complicated, the first way would be more intuitive and it shouldn't be so complicated to implement it. So, was this discussed earlier and is there a reason for not doing it so? Andreas

apache ssl management pages
by Jesse Goerz 19 Oct '02

19 Oct '02

I recently got ssl working on my system and wanted to use ssl for the management pages of zope. I'm using apache + zope + vhm. I'd like to be able to type the normal http url and if a management screen is viewed have it "redirect" (is that the right term) everything through secure pages. Everything is working now but I have to actually type https://... (oh, the agony) rather than just http://... In other words, I'd rather just type .../manage at the end and just log in and start working. Currently, that isn't happening, I have to manually type in the https or it doesn't get encrypted. Here's the httpd.conf (mind the word wrap): =================================================== NameVirtualHost 192.168.100.253:80 NameVirtualHost 192.168.100.253:443 <VirtualHost 192.168.100.253:80> ServerName mydomain.org # Secure management screens RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !443 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/(.*(manage).*) RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://127.0.0.1:9673/VirtualHostBase/https/%{HTTP_HOST}:443/jesse/VirtualH… [L,P] # Rewrite rules for normal zope browsing RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*:80$ RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://127.0.0.1:9673/VirtualHostBase/http/%{HTTP_HOST}/jesse/VirtualHostRo… [L,P] # A "static" directory within zope RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/nz/ RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://127.0.0.1:9673/VirtualHostBase/http/%{HTTP_HOST}:80/jesse/VirtualHos… [L,P] </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 192.168.100.253:443> ServerName mydomain.org <IfModule mod_ssl.c> SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /etc/apache/ssl.crt/server.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/apache/ssl.key/server.key SetEnvIf User-Agent ".*MSIE.*" nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown </IfModule> RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://127.0.0.1:9673/VirtualHostBase/https/%{HTTP_HOST}:443/jesse/VirtualH… [L,P] </VirtualHost>

Trouble accessing Zope FTP port from XEmacs
by Skip Montanaro 19 Oct '02

19 Oct '02

(This is all on a Mac G4 Powerbook running MacOS 10.2.1.) I got Zope 2.6.0beta1 installed a few days ago (right before the final 2.6.0 release I see), added postgresql and psycopgda, and began messing around with SQL methods in preparation for some consulting work. The last piece in the tool chain is to be able to edit Zope code from something other than a <textarea>. That's where XEmacs comes in, and where my problems begin. I'm running Zope in the default fashion, so it's listening to port 8021 for ftp. If I try to visit /admin@localhost:8021/ from XEmacs it correctly does the little efs dance, however, I always get the error message: *ftp admin@localhost* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n) I see no messages scroll in the window from which I started Zope. I can connect to the running Zope using plain old ftp: % ftp localhost 8021 Trying ::1... ftp: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. 220 montanaro.dyndns.org FTP server (Medusa Async V1.21 [experimental]) ready. Name (localhost:skip): admin 331 Password required. Password: 230 Login successful. Remote system type is UNIX. Using binary mode to transfer files. ftp> though the initial messages seem a bit weird to me. I peeked at /etc/hosts and saw two localhosts lines: 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost Figuring that was possibly the problem, I then tried visiting /admin@127.0.0.1:8021/ from XEmacs. Same error. I poked around Google and Google Groups looking for suggestions related to that error message, but turned up nothing useful. I don't know what the weird ::1 line is for, though I suspect it has something to do with NetInfo, so I'm a bit leery of deleting it. I did pause to try GNU Emacs. Connecting to /admin@127.0.0.1:8021/ failed, apparently because it didn't select port 8021, but instead tried to just connect to port 21. Any suggestions to get remote editing from XEmacs working? Thx, -- Skip Montanaro - skip(a)pobox.com http://www.mojam.com/ http://www.musi-cal.com/

howto set up a large set of users in a school
by Suneil Basu 19 Oct '02

Hi I would like to set up a zope site for my school with user profiles and authentication (1200 high school students in my London based school). At the moment I have a php/mysql solution. How do I set up 1300 users (100 teacher accounts)? I don't fancy adding manually into acl_users? Suneil

Zope products, ZClasses, Database rows, XML or what?
by jmabbate 19 Oct '02

19 Oct '02

Hi, After having studied Zope for about a month (in my spare time) and having read this list's messages during that time, I'm still ambivalent as to what to use for a website I'm developing. For example, several of the pages in the website will each be dedicated to an individual author. Each page will feature a short bio, a list of books authored, possibly a list of articles authored, and links to interviews and other interesting web sites/pages about or by the author. Each book in a list could have information about when it was published, ISBN, any awards received, links to reviews, links to one or more sources where the book can be purchased, and other interesting details. In some cases, the book could have a link to its own detailed page, within the website. (No, it's NOT Amazon II ;-) Prior to discovering Zope I had been working on implementing this with PHP, possibly combined with a relational database such as PostgreSQL and/or XML/XSL. With Zope, I have started working on the rendering using Page Templates. However, I'm still undecided as to what is the best way to handle all the data and content. Some of the recent messages indicate that ZClasses are not the way to go, that one should use Products, but the Zope Book (Extending Zope) describes products as being implemented with ZClasses or in Python (which I've been trying to learn too). The book also briefly describes support for XML but there is no mention of XSL, presumably because ZPT is the preferred mechanism for rendering different views. And of course, there is Gadfly and the relational DB adapters, which potentially would allow storing most of it in, say, PostgreSQL, my original preference, because this could hold lots and lots of data. I've also taken a look and installed CMF, but it doesn't appear to be a good match, since most of the content will not be long text articles, but rather short classifiable information about a given topic. I realize there's no single answer and that each solution has different costs, learning curve, future flexibility, etc. associated with it. I hope that input and feedback from the list will help in reaching a decision. Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions. For reference, I've been using 2.5.1 on WinXP, but the target will most likely run on Linux. Joe

Catching Dababase IntegrityError
by Mike Doanh Tran 18 Oct '02

18 Oct '02

Hi, Does anyone know how to catch this data integrity error? I was trying to give a more friendlier message than the Zope error_message when someone accidentially enters a duplicate Primary Key name of an existing record. Error Type: IntegrityError Error Value: (1062, "Duplicate entry 'Big Foot' for key 1") I have tried the following in my <dtml-var standard_error_message> , but it did not worked: <dtml-if "error_type=='IntegrityError'"> <h3>Duplicate Entry!</h3> <LI>This is a duplicate entry of an existing Database record. Please rename your entry. </dtml-if> Thanks, Mike

Low cost zope hosting?
by Nagle, Robert 18 Oct '02

18 Oct '02

I'm looking for a low cost web host for zope. Some things I've noticed on the zope solution provider directory http://www.zope.org/Resources/ZSP Is that most of these don't have prices (probably because they are offering more than just hosting but additional support and customization) or that the hosting costs are substantially above for example, php/apache/mysql hosting companies. Good Php/mysql hosting companies are now going for as low as $10-15 a month. One with zope doesn't have to be THAT cheap, but it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg either. I'm not looking for a host for a production environment, just for a personal/semi-play environment, but one with scripting support for php and mysql. I am running zope from my (illegal) home web server and can always use the free zope hosting http://www.nipltd.net/Free Services, but I am curious about what solutions other zope developers are opting for these days. Are you just getting standard php/mysql hosting and then paying/begging for the hosting company to let you run zope? RE: Using GPL'd modules with Zope?
by Derek Basch 18 Oct '02

18 Oct '02

Well, I found the answer to my question after 3 hours of digging on google. It was discussed in great detail a year ago on the zope-dev list: http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/2001-June/011775.html Everyone seems to disagree but it looks like I cant use GPL'd Products without GPL'ing the entire zope installation. Anyone care to dispute this? Thanks, Derek Basch __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos & More http://faith.yahoo.com

RE: [Zope] Training My Users
by Schmidt, Allen J. 18 Oct '02

18 Oct '02

We use the term 'bussed' as in: "I had better document this in case I get bussed" -- run over by a bus. Seems appropriate sometimes... I posted this to the list a while back but since then a new version has come out. I use a tool to create Viewlets...step-by-step screen captures with call-outs and text balloons to fully show software procedures. The old version used Java and its own structure for the presentation. Worked great on Windows boxes but was flaky on other platforms. The new version generates pure Flash .swf files. Just upload them into Zope and link them in and away you go! Very nice accompaniment to printed docs or manuals. And, you can even print out the slides in a "Powerpointy" way. Very handy. The free version is fully functional with a watermark of the company's logo on it. And the Viewlets created with the free version can be compiled with the licensed version with no change. Half price for educational institutions. Worth a look. I'd love to see several Zope product how-tos done with Viewlets. http://www.Qarbon.com (pronounced "Carbon", I think) Have fun! -Allen -----Original Message----- From: zope-admin(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-admin@zope.org]On Behalf Of Fearless Froggie Sent: Friday, October 18, 2002 12:42 PM To: Zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Training My Users > I'm going to be teaching a course to get some people started using Zope. I haven't (yet) had to teach anybody to use zope, but I have had to teach others how to use other web based content management systems. Two things really helped out: 1) Create a step by step manual that explains exactly how to do all the tasks you want them to be able to do. I found that what was really painfully detailed for me, was barely adequete for them. What's really obvious to you, won't be adequete to them. And PRINT IT OUT! That way they can make notes, etc, while you're explaining things to them. I found that creating that manual took forever, but it's helpful in case I get run over by a bus tomorrow, and it gives users something to consult when they have questions. 2) I just show users what they need to know and try to remove the clutter. That way they're less confused. I don't know if that's the kind of information you're looking for, but maybe it'll be helpful.
