Zope, CMF, WebDAV +Windows' Network Place and versioning.
by Knut Meidal 14 Oct '02

Greetings! I have been playing with Zope and CMF. Scavenged an old HP Workstation, a B132L with PA-RISC processor, little RAM and a small disk(2.1GB). Got Debian Linux installed, along with debs of Zope, Zope-CMF. (PostgreSQL too, in case I ever figure out how to move my data in there. Hints appreciated.) I now have a test-CMF site running. I have created a few folders and users, uploaded a few files, published and played around. I saw that Zope-CMF supported WebDAV. And I saw the light. My great vision was to create a Windows "Network Place" to read/write to Zope directly from Windows. This way, I envisioned, I could have people use familiar tools to save documents to a familiar environment. While at the same time, we could attach some metadata to the items, and use versioning between files, with full accounting on who edited what file, when, and possibly keeping track of several versions of the SAME FILE, in the SAME PLACE using the SAME Filename. It almost works. I can create "Network Places", save documents to the Zope folders. Only thing missing is the ability to have Zope versioning on files created in this manner. Can it be done? Anyone else tried this approach? Experiences? Good? Bad? Do's and DON'Ts? Tips, tricks? PostgreSQL pointers? KnutM

xml-rpc TypeError "too many arguments"
by Mark Roach 14 Oct '02

14 Oct '02

Hello, all. I have been having continued quirks with xml-rpc. First here is a little bit of backgroud about what I am trying to accomplish. My apologies for the length of this post. In some circumstances, rather than an html-generating content server I would like to use zope as a method of easily publishing some existing python funcitons via xml-rpc. For instance, I have some windows system administration functions that I would like to make callable from my linux based web server in a secure fashion. Zope seems to me to be designed to do just this sort of thing, right? That may all be useless info, but I just wanted to include it in case my problem was more a case of using zope outside it's intended purpose. So here's my actual question :) A couple of functions that I want to publish are user creation and deletion functions, named (creatively) AddUser and DeleteUser. These functions are external methods which work with COM objects among other things. The problem is that half the time when I call these methods I get an error Error Type: TypeError Error Value: too many arguments Opening the ZMI and performing a "save changes" on the external method makes the exact same call work just fine. I'm not sure where to even begin looking which is what prompted the long "am I doing something fundamentally wrong" part of this message. Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't mind getting my hands dirty but I don't know where to begin. Thanks, Mark Roach

I have applied for a free booth in the linux world conference for zope.org If anyone wants more details I can email them the .doc files. Has anyone else submitted a python.org application? Has anyone else submitted a zope.org application? Or should we just do one booth, pythonandzope.org? Does anyone want to volunteer to help run the booth? Which user mgmt prod/technique for sharing user info with other apps?
by Felix Ulrich-Oltean 14 Oct '02

I'm looking for some advice please. My (yet another cms) Zope application needs to work transparently with a user management platform based on php and maybe even perl - the overall application lets customers do lots of stuff like: manage account, manage e-mail adds, domains, services, sites (cms). User information, including what level of access (role) they have per-site, is stored in a postgresql db. I think we're using Apache to set unique session ids which are stuffed into cookies/urls. Using this sessin id, my zope app needs to recognise the user without re-prompting for credentials, and know her roles. Also, any links back to the other parts of the system need to preserve the session info, but that's OT I guess. Which of the user management products fits the bill best? Or what should I read to be able to make a more educated decision? Thanks, Felix.

Perl scripts
by Andreas Tille 14 Oct '02

Hello, The Zope Book mentions that you can use Perl with Zope - but that's all I've found about Perl usage. I have to convert some database query to an Excel file and the only way I know to do this is the Spreadsheet::WriteExcel module. Thus I would like to write a Perl script using this module but I have no idea how to use Perl at all. Alternatively I would like to do the conversion with Python if this is possible. Kind regards Andreas.

import strangeness
by KevinL 14 Oct '02

I'm trying to work out how Zope's import path works. I've got a debian standard package install, which has two Products directories - one in /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products, the other in /var/lib/zope/Products - the first is for package-provided products, the second is for user-installed products. /var/lib/zope is listed in zopectl as 'INSTANCE_HOME', which seems perfectly reasonable. I've got CookieCrumbler, and a few other things, installed in /var/lib/zope/Products. I'm currently trying to get some unit testing working in a product of ours - and what I'm seeing isn't making any sense. Clip from the product: from Products.PageTemplates.ZopePageTemplate import manage_addPageTemplate from Products.Sessions.BrowserIdManager import constructBrowserIdManager from Products.Sessions.SessionDataManager import constructSessionDataManager from Products.CookieCrumbler import CookieCrumbler CookieCrumbler is in /var/lib/zope/Products, Sessions and PageTemplates are in /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products. How is Zope differentiating between these two "Products"? My own playing around seems to indicate that python can recognise only one of the two directories as a source of modules - and the attempt at building unit tests is running afoul of this, the product can't import CookieCrumbler because /usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Products is getting in the way. But Zope itself is able to deal with this perfectly. What's even wierder is the sys.path when the import is performed - first under zope: ['/usr/lib/zope/lib/python/ZopeZODB3', '/usr/lib/zope/lib/python', '/usr/lib/zope', '/usr/lib/zope/lib/python', '/usr/sbin/../lib/zope', '/usr/lib/python2.1', '/usr/lib/python2.1/plat-linux2', '/usr/lib/python2.1/lib-tk', '/usr/lib/python2.1/lib-dynload', '/usr/local/lib/python2.1/site-packages', '/usr/lib/python2.1/site-packages', '/usr/lib/site-python', '/home/darius/cvs/HEAD/Jet', '/home/darius/cvs/HEAD/Jet'] Now, under unit tests: ['', '/usr/lib/python2.1', '/usr/lib/python2.1/plat-linux2', '/usr/lib/python2.1/lib-tk', '/usr/lib/python2.1/lib-dynload', '/usr/local/lib/python2.1/site-packages', '/usr/lib/python2.1/site-packages', '/usr/lib/site-python', '/home/darius/cvs/HEAD/Jet', '/usr/lib/zope/lib/python', '/usr/lib/zope/lib/python/Testing/../Products', '/var/lib/zope', '/home/darius/cvs/HEAD/Jet'] So, under zope, there's no /var/lib/zope in there at all. So, how is the import finding CookieCrumbler when Zope runs? I'm confused :| KevinL

Yes, I think you are right with: "higher up in the tree structure of the site" but this is not form IE, it don't works in Netscape 4.75 or 7.0 neither and so... I think the bug is from Zope, don't you think so?! or where is the mistake (I understand the facts but ".../StupidBug" and ".../StupidBug/" points to the same page).
