External Editor question

I was able to get External Editor working on a Solaris box and W2K Client. I used Python-2.2.1.exe, win32all-148.exe, and zopeedit-win32-0.5.exe on W2K client. I only had to add an editor path to the ZopeEdit.ini to get it to work on the client (Product already installed on ZServer) Works great with one (1) editor path but how do I get it to differentiate from a text editor (or html editor) and an image editor? Read your doc's and it should have worked because file types are already config'ed. # C:\ZopeExternalEditor\ZopeEdit.ini # Zope External Editor helper application configuration [general] # General configuration options # Uncomment and specify an editor value to override the editor # specified by the operating system # editor = "C:\Program Files\TextPad 4\TextPad.exe" # editor = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Photoshop.exe" "%1" editor = "C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver UltraDev 4\UltraDev.exe" "%1" # Automatic save interval, in seconds. Zope feature freeze project ??
by Julián Muñoz 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

Hello, as many of you, I am driving a zope based platform for a business. What happen with Zope developpment ? Like most of the Public software, the developpment is a mix of bug fixes and feature adds. It's like the life :-) Feature adds means a lack of compatibility with the "mass" of products installed on your working platform, which means moving all this products to follow the fast developping speed of Zope... But, how many time do you need the new features ? When you have developped the platform the first time, you did a great work, and now you only want to keep it alive at a low cost. Bug Fixes mean that you will not stay for hours and days investigating why something is failling, and avoiding the cracking of the sysem. So you need it. There is an alternative way, which is the development of a Zope with feature freeze, and only bug fixes. And I think it is surely more economic and secure than updating all the products. Well, in my case I am with Zope 2.4.4b2, and I don't want to upgrade to Zope 2.5. I still remembre when I started the developpment with 2.4, almost none of the Zope 2.3 products worked !!! So I am looking for: 1) A software tool to manage this "feature freeze" developpment (I suppose that a very good cvs system, to differentiate the bug fixes and the feature adds, from the zope head developpment). I have looked for a generic system, and a generic community, but I haven't find anything yet. 2) People with the same needs. 3) Tell and explain me why I am wrong. Thanks :-) -- __o _ \<_ (_)/(_) Saludos de Julián -.- DVD-record Tools for linux http://www.freesoftware.fsf.org/dvdrtools/

Feature I would like to see in next ReplaceSupport
by Peter Bengtsson 12 Sep '02

Stefan, When you get a search result using the ReplaceSupport product I think it would be great if next to every link there's a little ExternalEditor pen for the ExternalEditor product for those who have that installed. I tried quickly and it works but I'm not sure how good it is. What I tried was this, around line 80 in dtml/replaceResults.dtml <dtml-let explicit="_.getitem('sequence-item').aq_explicit" parent_url="explicit.aq_parent.absolute_url()"> <dtml-if expr="_.hasattr(explicit, 'manage_FTPget') or _.hasattr(explicit, 'read') or _.hasattr(explicit, 'document_src')"> <a href="&dtml-parent_url;/externalEdit_/<dtml-var "explicit.getId()">" title="Edit using external editor" ><img src="&dtml-BASEPATH1;/misc_/ExternalEditor/edit_icon" align="middle" hspace="2" border="0" alt="External Editor" /></a> </dtml-if> </dtml-let> <dtml-if locked_in_version> <dtml-if modified_in_version> <img src="&dtml-BASEPATH1;/p_/locked" alt="This item has been modified in this version" /> <dtml-else> <img src="&dtml-BASEPATH1;/p_/lockedo" alt="This item has been modified in another version" /> (<em>&dtml-locked_in_version;</em>) </dtml-if> </dtml-if> In my product QuickLinks (http://www.zope.org/Members/peterbe/QuickLinks) I override the same stuff as ExternalEditor does if you wanna see how I made the distinction between having and not having ExternalEditor installed --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Put an editor variable under the document type entry similar to: [content-type:image/gif] extension=.gif editor=gimp assuming gimp is in your path. -----Original Message----- From: eric.n.dunn(a)bankofamerica.com [mailto:eric.n.dunn@bankofamerica.com] Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 9:53 AM To: Casey Duncan Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] External Editor question I was able to get External Editor working on a Solaris box and W2K Client. Site evolution and redirection strategies
by Howard Hansen 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

We're contemplating some major changes to our sites that will break many existing URLs. In our first transition (from Front Page to Zope!), I handled the issue by matching the old URLs and creating a few DTML Methods with code along the lines of: <dtml-call expr="RESPONSE.redirect('index_html')"> This works fine, but it's not terribly clear what's going on. It seems like it would be reasonably trivial (i.e., within my powers) to create a python product that stored the new destination and performed the redirection. This product would have the advantage of looking different than a simple DTML method. This morning I got a list from my boss of old URLs and their new names, which got me thinking.... What if there existed a centralized redirection product that allowed me to enter lists of old and new URLs and have the redirection automagically happen? Seems to me that this starts to get into the realm of acquisition and other deep voodoo magic best left alone. I'm leaning toward creating the simple product and leaving it at that, or perhaps additionally creating a script that generates the redirect objects automatically from my list of old and new URLs. So I'd love to hear your wisdom. How have people handled this problem in the past? Do products like these already exist? Are there any gotchas that I haven't considered? Any and all help appreciated, as always! Howard Hansen http://howardsmusings.com

Simple Comparison - How to find the Template you are in in a list of all files in a directory
by Edward Pollard 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

I have a simple Python script that returns a list of files in a directory. This is used on a page template to create a list of links to all sibling files in the folder. This is very similar to one of the Zope examples. However I can't delete the current context from the list as I want it included, just displayed differently. The Python script sorts the objects by a required criteria to determine their order in the list, so manually reintroducing the current context in the template is not possible. I've been attempting to iterate through the list and then compare the file ID of the item in the repeat loop with the file ID of the template using 'cmp'. I cannot get cmp to return 0 even when the names are the same (as evaluated by displaying them in the template). Is this the incorrect way to compare strings? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks, Edward

Re: [Zope] Where to start using CMF?
by eric.n.dunn＠bankofamerica.com 12 Sep '02

portal_skins has all the page templates. Choose one from the properties list "custom, zpt_topic, zpt_calendar, zpt_content, zpt_generic, zpt_control, topic, calendar, content, generic, control, Images" and send to custom folder. Make some changes and see how it changes the CMF. Newbie <newbie(a)konzoo.com> on 09/12/2002 07:50:20 AM To: zope-cmf(a)zope.org, zope(a)zope.org cc: Subject: [Zope] Where to start using CMF? Hi, can anyone help me how to start customizing CMF. I must say, I don't really like its design. So, I'm looking for customizing the whole design and plucking essential components inside, such as discussion, news, etc. But it is quite confusing on how each components work together in CMF. There are also different portal types. I know I need to start in "portal_skins". But after I customize the first page and click on "news", the design changes totally. So, is there any reference where I need to start and how are those portals corelated? thanks. Memory consumtion of a zope instance
by James Johnson 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

I'm glad this thread was started, because I was wondering about memory consumption on my win2k machine running one instance. It seems to start off using between 25-30 megs. Now it's sitting at 38 megs. When I login or access certain folders like the root, it goes up between 70-90 megs. It takes along time for met to access the root folder. I only have 10-15 objects in the root. Jens Vagelpohl] >there is a lot of factors playing into this:: > >- ZODB size The Data.fs files is 22 megs and the Data.fs.index is 743kb. >- hit rate on your website I've not checked it lately, but I would say I'm classified as a small website. I'm hosting 3 domains, I have moderate traffic. >- ZODB cache settings hmm, I have the much touted "target size" set to the default 400. I tried changing it to 8000, with no noticable difference. >- version of zope 2.5.0--- I'm still waiting for the next windows binary release. I can't seem to get the list to respond to my calls for help on building a release on win32. So I can't benefite from a 2.6 release yet. >- number and size of ZCatalogs used uh err. probably many. I don't think over 10, not sure of the size of them, or how I would check. >IMHO i think it's really hard to give meaningful numbers. >>I'd even be entertained and delighted to hear non-meaningful numbers, >>though. I say that partly in jest, but I guess I mean, "Any of the >> >>folks >>out there hosting Zope care to share whatever numbers they have on >>how >>many >>Zope instances they can fit on a machine?" It would be a bonus to >>have >>some >>information on the average Zope instance's profile a la the factors >>you >>mention as well as stats on the machine (RAM, disk space, SCSI vs. >>Ultra >>ATA, etc). Overall I use win2k on a athlon 500 with 130 megs. I know I should be running linux, but I'm also running oracle personal that is only taking up 7 megs of ram idle as comparted to Zopes 38 megs. I had trouble trying to get oracle to run on linux and it's only temporary while I finish my oracle training. I've tried the call profiler, but it doesn't seem to work with the fsobjects. So I can only test regular dtml and python scripts. I guess I'm suppose to set an enviroment varible in NT to turn on the internal profiler. If you ask me, I'd agree you need to look at buying more RAM and possibly a ZEO thing if you plan to have that many instances running. From what I see that ram usage can go up 3x.
