for reasons that aren't clear to me, I can see NONE of the changes I made to my standard header using a ce 2.11 browser. the changes were nothing to brag about. just baby steps. I'm confused. they show up fine on ie6.

DCOracle2 and Clob object problem
by Mateusz 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

Hi! I have problem with dcoracle 2 and clob object. I'm working under: Zope Version (Zope 2.5.1 (binary release, python 2.1, linux2-x86), python 2.1.3, linux2) Python Version 2.1.3 (#1, Apr 15 2002, 11:13:45) [GCC 2.7.2.3] System Platform linux2 (RedHat 7.1) When i'm testing function (which is below) under win 2000 it works properly, but under RedHat7.2 it prints "None" as a data object, but when i print object ala, i see : [[<LobLocator object at 0x8b59ab8>]] so i'm sure that there is an clob object. This is my test function. I think method "read()" does't work properly under linux? Do you have any suggestions? ========== def test1(): db = DCOracle2.connect("p_engine/qwerty@neodev") c = db.cursor() c.execute("select html_clob from tags_tokens where id='37'") ala = c.fetchone() lob = ala[0] data = lob.read() print data c.close() return data ========== Best regards, Mateusz

zpt, metal and missing content objects (bit long)
by Tim Hicks 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

zpt users, I don't have much experience with zpts, but my experiments this morning aren't really throwing up good things so far. My main problems seem to stem from METAL, which I want to use to mimic the behaviour <dtml-var standard_html_header/footer>. So, I have a zpt called 'standard_template' in my root folder. It defines a whole page macro called 'page' which in turn has a slot defined within it called 'body'. Next, I setup a zpt somewhere else to store content, that acquires the 'standard_template' zpt and uses it in the following way: <html metal:use-macro="container/standard_template/macros/page"> <head> <title tal:content="here/title">Title Inserted</title> </head> <body> <div metal:fill-slot="body"> <p>This is the real content of this content object. I've had to go through a lot to get it here! All I really want in this object is this one paragraph, not all the zpt shenanigans.</p> </div> </body> </html> Ok, so this works out fine. But... ... what if I want to make some global changes to my site? What if I want to add a heading (on every page) right after my <body> tag, and I want it to be the title of the zpt (not 'standard_template', but that using it). Doing the following doesn't seem to work when put in 'standard_template' as 'here' is not what I want when being accessed within a macro. <body> <h1 tal:content="here/title">title inserted here</h1> It seems to me, that the only way I could achieve this would be to put that text into every individual zpt holding content. I can't believe this is right, so what am I missing? It strikes me that what I really want is a simple object that when rendered, has 'standard_template' called as a method of it. In this case, I'd only need to store the real content in the object, without all the zpt markup. I also wouldn't need METAL, macros, slots etc. I'd just use TAL to insert things into my 'standard_template' (perhaps based on properties of the content object). Even better, I would then have one (and only one) place where the site layout is defined, so I could make global changes very easily. I've hacked together an example of just such a content object, but it's hardly production ready, and I'm also constrained to use only those objects packaged as part of the base zope installation (2.5.1 in this case). At the back of my mind, I can't help thinking that I must have the wrong end of the stick. Most people seem very positive about zpt and apparently use it very successfully. It seems to me that the product is missing one final object that would actually make it work perfectly. Hoping-for-enlightenment-ly yours, tim (of the non-Peters variety ;-) )

searching the ZODB by size
by Tim Wilson 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

Hi everyone, Is it possible to search the ZODB and return a list of the 10 largest objects? The size of my Data.fs really jumped recently and I'm trying to find out what caused it. -Tim -- Tim Wilson | Visit Sibley online: | Check out: Henry Sibley HS | http://www.isd197.org | http://www.zope.com W. Re: Zope Myths?

Hi, > We've been giving some thought to the best way of > informing people about Zope. An outline of the ground > we plan to cover is at: > > http://www.bris.ac.uk/is/projects/cms/zope/ucisa-sg/mythz.htm It's interesting, but there is something that worries me: > Documental Template Markup Language (DTML) is now deprecated in favour of Zope Presentation Templates (ZPT). > DTML, as well as being "proprietary", often lead to code that was hard to maintain. ZPT allows for a much better > separation of presentation and logic (the logic being done in Python or Perl). Moreover, ZPT is XHTML compliant > and can be edited with a wide range of tools. Is it true? Does it mean that future versions of Zope won't support DTML? Thanks, Josef

Issue tracking systems for Zope?
by zopyx＠t-online.de 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

I am looking for an issue/bug tracking for Zope that should be (highly) customizable (additionals fields for an issue must be added easily without too much changes inside the application code and presentation). In addition there should be support for a relational database. Are there any usable products beyond IssueTracker, CMFCollector or ZShrink? Cheers, Andreas

Rendering other objects with python script
by Andreas Kostyrka 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

Hi! I'm wondering how I can get the rendering that DocumentTemplates seem to apply automatically with Python Scripts: <dtml-var "_['testname']"> return getattr(context,"testname") gives me "<Folder instace ...>" Trying to augment it with: return getattr(context,"testname")() or return getattr(context,"testname")(request) only gives me KeyErrors too :( Andreas

Forgot your password... but...

Hi!! ...if I choose to encrypt the password, and then I ask to receive te password by mail I receive the encrypted password. I think that a better way for "I forgot my password" id this: - create a new password - send it clear by mail and save it encrypted... ...better ideas? Bye, Cristian

Fw: [Zope-dev] Logging in as admin and impersonating another user - is it possible with Zopes sec policy?
by Dario Lopez-Kästen 12 Sep '02

12 Sep '02

Hello! [sent this to the zope-dev list but it was pointed out that perhpas this was a better list, even it imho is a development question] I am wondering if it is possible to write a userfolder that does the following (I need to implement a userfolder with these properties): For certain categories of users, for instance Teachers, while keeping their current authorisation of Teachers, I need to let them "impersonate" a user with lower authorisation than they currently have, say Students. So a logged in Teacher could for instance examine what a particular student sees in a Student portal (i.e. "previewing" it as would that particular student) Is this possible with Zopes current securtiy mechanisms? For now I can do it by providing a security mechanism that runs in parallel to zope's own, but it is a bit cumbersome to develop for - also I miss some of the features that zope provides for automagically protecting obejcts, etc. Proxy roels will not work for what I have in mind (at leats I think they won't). Any info or pointers are appreciated. Sincerely, /dario - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dario Lopez-Kästen, dario(a)ita.chalmers.se IT Systems & Services System Developer/System Administrator Chalmers University of Tech.
