Chris, Max, Andreas, thanks for your comments. I am still wondering if /hoping Zope is the right tool. As I said I am pretty technical but completely new to Zope/Phyton and for now I "just" have a urgent need I thought is pretty generic: * Setup a "portal" where a small team/community can share docs, links and maybe discussions. * Docs must be categorized (users can add new categories), provide upload capability * UI must be super-simple (no Zope management stuff) - simply allow users these basic features (create new doc, upload, create news/links/discussio) and nothing more To give you guys an idea of a pretty good solution from the Evil Empire - look at MSFT Team Services (http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/sharepoint/fastfacts.htm) or the So why do I just not give in and use MSFT ? 1) I prefer open source alternatives to the evil empire 2) I like what I see in Zope/Plone and _think_ it could fit but I need a minimum set of out-of-the-box features I currently don't see (seems like zope has too much stuff <- this always happen in tech communities - geeky stuff takes overhand) 3) Zope is customizable so once I get the hand on it I can see myself adding new features that closed MSFT prods do not allow... So tell me - are my req's that stange? How much work would it be to get Zope/Plone close to the MSFT Team Services? Niels Re: the ZODB: One pretty important requirement is that members should be able to take a snapshot of content from the site for offline work (reading while flying or otherwise offline) Haveing everything in a file system (that can be mapped) is the easiest way..I think. Dear Zopers, have installed Zope and even plone (great UI!), am technically capable but new to Zope/Python. I was hoping to get the above subject up and running with minimum effort but am stuck - here my "requirements" - any and all suggestions on how to implement these (with min programming) welcome: * Simple CMS portal for sharing files (word docs, ppt,etc) * Ability to categorize" files into "folders" (like "designdoc", "customerdoc",etc) * Easy mechanism for uploading/downloading files (somehow explorer like woul be great) * Simple discussion forum/news section * User management (site only accessible to registered users) Nice2Have: * Versioning of files - at minimum some method of notifying that one member is currently updating a file.. * Use filesystem (and NOT ZODB) for storage of all files * I am the opinion that Zope can do most (all) of this but need pointers to where to start and/or if anybody out there has some pre-packaged solution.. scheduling a piece of code to run

Hi all, Can anybody please offer any starting points on exactly that? Bascily I want to run a piece of code (DTML or Python) every, say, 5 mins, that will do some SQL queries and then other stuff if a date field is greater than the current date and time. Simple stuff - I hope! But I have not much idea where to start looking, and I haven't been too successful with what I've tried so far... :( thanks for any help! Regards, Greg Conway. Enumerating owners

Hi there, I need to write a Python script (or an Extension, if the former isn't possible) that will enumerate a list of owners (including those with local ownership roles) for a given context. The code must work in an anonymous security context. Unfortunately, it looks like the the getOwner method of the Owned mixin class is very useful as it won't work in an anonymous security context. i have installed redhat 6.2 for sparc. i have cmpiled python 2.1.x . i have compiled The latest Zope. The ./install never comes up after 8 hours. no errors. Just the first starting line. Chris Johnson 713-996-1619 QE NetIQ

Maybe Zope developpers could have comments. ************** First, a warning: - I'm very poor in english. - I woke up way too early this morning. - It's a long post... (Sorry!) - I *love* python. This is not a troll, or anything like that. Ok. Here we go. I would like to share my impressions and my comments on Python. At the end, I will propose what would be for me the *perfect* Python interpreter. Background: I'm working on a fairly big Python (Zope) project since a year and a half. It's a content management system for a big (19 000 employees) entreprise. At first, I was the sole developper for the project. My orders were: "Ok, choose what you want, do what you want. We just want one thing: results..." Lucky, hey? ;) I had experience in Object Pascal (Delphi), Vb (...), C++ and Java. I was new in the company, and wanted to impress my bosses. After some research, I narrowed my choices to two options: EJB (Java) and Zope (Python). I gave a serious look at EJB, but in the end, I chose Python. I took a risk. I don't regret it. After only 2 months, I had already produced a working system. Alone... :) Opinions, impressions: At first, I was amazed by the simplicity and the clarity of the syntax. I *love* the indentation style. It gives clean and standardized source code. We are now three developpers on the project, and it's easy for anyone of us to understand the code of the others. But... As project grew up, I started to see some of the limitations of the language. I understand that Python was not designed for such big projects. But it's so powerfull, so clean, that I just wonder what Python could become with just some (ok, not so minors...) improvements. I understand that backward compatibility is important too, but the latests extensions to Python begin to seem locked by past decisions. I don't like this tendency to __this__ and __that__ everything. We loose in readability, accessibility and clarity, in my opinion... The Perfect Python (c): What is missing ? Well, I'm not a language designer, but I can say what *I* miss. - Interfaces. Behavior checking is not enough. - Private and Public scopes. Explicitly. No more __name_mangling - Design by contract. Pre and Post conditions. Could save hours of debugging. - Block comments. """ """ should be for documentation. - Class variables. - A cleaner Property declaration. No separate _variable. Saw too many newbie posts about that. - No more self in functions declarations. In OOP, this *can* be implicit. (I know, this is controversial stuff) - Standard GUI library. AnyGui seems to be the solution, but development seems to have stalled recently... I tried to write an example of what Perfect Python(c) could look like.
