by Zoper 29 Aug '02

Hi folks! I'm planning to develop a web portal with Zope. What product should I use for my purpose? I would like to obtain the same functionalities of my phpNuke-based web site... but... with the power of the Zope environment. Regards. Giuseppe.

Chris, Max, Andreas, thanks for your comments. I am still wondering if /hoping Zope is the right tool. As I said I am pretty technical but completely new to Zope/Phyton and for now I "just" have a urgent need I thought is pretty generic: * Setup a "portal" where a small team/community can share docs, links and maybe discussions. * Docs must be categorized (users can add new categories), provide upload capability * UI must be super-simple (no Zope management stuff) - simply allow users these basic features (create new doc, upload, create news/links/discussio) and nothing more To give you guys an idea of a pretty good solution from the Evil Empire - look at MSFT Team Services (http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/sharepoint/fastfacts.htm) or the So why do I just not give in and use MSFT ? 1) I prefer open source alternatives to the evil empire 2) I like what I see in Zope/Plone and _think_ it could fit but I need a minimum set of out-of-the-box features I currently don't see (seems like zope has too much stuff <- this always happen in tech communities - geeky stuff takes overhand) 3) Zope is customizable so once I get the hand on it I can see myself adding new features that closed MSFT prods do not allow... So tell me - are my req's that stange? How much work would it be to get Zope/Plone close to the MSFT Team Services? Niels Re: the ZODB: One pretty important requirement is that members should be able to take a snapshot of content from the site for offline work (reading while flying or otherwise offline) Haveing everything in a file system (that can be mapped) is the easiest way..I think. I had mixed emperienced with Zope's WebDAV - basically one can mostly not use W2K explorer for copy/paste - explorer<->Zope WebDav just don't work well together and I cannot change the fact that 99% of team members are on W2K clients.. >_______________________________________________ >Zope maillist - Zope@z... >http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope >** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** >(Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce > http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev ) _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

Newbiw: How to use Zope for simple CMS sharing docs (word, etc) and
by Niels Petersen 29 Aug '02

Dear Zopers, have installed Zope and even plone (great UI!), am technically capable but new to Zope/Python. I was hoping to get the above subject up and running with minimum effort but am stuck - here my "requirements" - any and all suggestions on how to implement these (with min programming) welcome: * Simple CMS portal for sharing files (word docs, ppt, etc) * Ability to categorize" files into "folders" (like "designdoc", "customerdoc",etc) * Easy mechanism for uploading/downloading files (somehow explorer like woul be great) * Simple discussion forum/news section * User management (site only accessible to registered users) Nice2Have: * Versioning of files - at minimum some method of notifying that one member is currently updating a file.. * Use filesystem (and NOT ZODB) for storage of all files * I am the opinion that Zope can do most (all) of this but need pointers to where to start and/or if anybody out there has some pre-packaged solution.. Thanks, Niels _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

scheduling a piece of code to run
by Greg Conway 29 Aug '02

29 Aug '02

Hi all, Can anybody please offer any starting points on exactly that? Bascily I want to run a piece of code (DTML or Python) every, say, 5 mins, that will do some SQL queries and then other stuff if a date field is greater than the current date and time. Simple stuff - I hope! But I have not much idea where to start looking, and I haven't been too successful with what I've tried so far... :( thanks for any help! Regards, Greg Conway. Enumerating owners
by Michael S. Fischer 29 Aug '02

29 Aug '02

Hi there, I need to write a Python script (or an Extension, if the former isn't possible) that will enumerate a list of owners (including those with local ownership roles) for a given context. The code must work in an anonymous security context. Unfortunately, it looks like the the getOwner method of the Owned mixin class is very useful as it won't work in an anonymous security context. Can someone please lend assistance? Thanks, -- Michael S. Fischer / michael at dynamine.net / +1 650-533-4684 Lead Hacketeer, Dynamine Consulting, Silicon Valley, CA

last updated
by Mark McEahern 28 Aug '02

This is probably dead easy, but searching for "zope 'last updated' zpt" doesn't seem to produce any thing resembling what I want. How do I insert a last updated macro type thing in a ZPT? I imagine something like this: <tal:x replace="here/lastUpdated"/> Thanks, // mark -
