Non-live edits to live site
by Jim Kutter 28 Aug '02

I went live with part of my site in Zope and all went well (thanks for the mountains of help from this group). But I've ran into a bit of a sticky wicket that I hadn't thought of until now. We (me - Developer and our Designer) primarily use external editors on Win98 and FTP to do what we need to do, then upload the changes back to Zope (I use Xemacs, she uses DreamWeaver) - however the version control object doesn't catch FTP transactions, so whatever we upload is live, thereby eliminating the ability to test new things (particularly new scripts - which don't work with version control anyway). My question is - short of setting up a ZEO cluster (which I'm not sure would solve it anyway), or having a zope install on our desktops, how can I setup some ability to do new things to the site without them being live right away? -jim

Plone at Highway Africa
by Jean Jordaan 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

Hi all On the 22 August 2002 we (me and Roché Compaan) introduced journalists at the Highway Africa conference (http://www.highwayafrica.org.za) to the Plone CMF during a 3-hour workshop. Highway Africa was (a small) part of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the moment. The workshop was a lot of fun: we nursed the roomful of journalists, some young, some veterans, from all over Africa, through the process of joining the portal, customizing their homepages, visiting each others' homepages, and adding a news item. Then half of them got the "Reviewer" role, and rejected the news item of the person next to them with a comment. The author revised their article, resubmitted, and the reviewers published it. For most of the participants, this was their first encounter with collaborative online publishing, and *almost* too good to be true. They wanted to continue using it. A big barrier is simply knowledge and connectivity --- there are many online publishing forums, but if your only access is via expensive dialup at a semi-legal internet cafe, then you're not in the position to figure out which ones are good and reliable, and how to use them. "Open Source" was a recurring refrain during the conference, but for the majority of people it was a buzzword without substance. In his presentation, Roché told where the movement comes from, and gave some definitions. Many people came to us afterwards, asking for more names, papers and sources of information about Open Source, its acceptance, business models and economic viability studies about it. It was clear that there is a great deal of sober interest among policy makers who are beginning to see Open Source as a valuable resource, both as infrastructure and as community. Among the organisations who expressed interest or support were the Acacia Project (http://www.idrc.ca/ACACIA/) the Association for Progressive Communications (http://www.apc.org/) the European Centre for Development Policy Management (http://www.ecdpm.org/) and the Department of Communications (http://docweb.pwv.gov.za/) In their presentation, the DoC spoke of moving the Department's operations to Open Source, and of advocating Open Source at other government departments. They also want to look for appropriate channels to promote Open Source in the private sector, but were unsure how this might best be approached. According to Bridget McBean of the ECDPM, Torped's Easy Publisher is doing very well in Europe. She isn't familiar with Zope, Open Source, online publishing or whatever, but she does know that many organizations use Easy Publisher. Roché's talk is online at: http://www.upfrontsystems.co.za/highwayafrica-opensource-talk.html http://www.upfrontsystems.co.za/highwayafrica.html We'd like to try building on the publishing platform that we presented during our workshop. About the workshop: as it was done live on the internet, it's still accessible. Here it is: http://demo.upfrontsystems.co.za/plone Besides the finger exercises, there are a couple of good articles. Look at this one: http://demo.upfrontsystems.co.za/plone/Members/baraka/News_Item.2002-08-22.… We aim to contact the workshop attendees and invite them to continue using the portal for publishing. It would be great if a real space for collaboration could emerge. Regards, -- Jean Jordaan Upfront Systems http://www.upfrontsystems.co.za

search: question
by Ruslan Spivak 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

Hello zope users, I need your help with search capability. I have wrote custom zpt pages with some python scripts and zsql methods. Page templates are for reporting needs to show statistics about clients. All data about clients are stored in relational database. I want 'search box' to search in my database too. What should I customize/write to implement this? Or maybe there is better approache? (should I write separate script to do search in db and not to touch standard search?) Any help, suggestions are very appreciated. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Ruslan mailto:alienoid@is.lg.ua

Are "Interfaces" anything more than a documentation mechanism
by Phil Glaser 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

Hi, I'm reading through the Zope Developers Guide (http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZDG/current/index_html) and have a questions about the whole concept of interfaces and components. When I first saw this, I thought the Interface module was a way for accomplishing something similar to what you do with an abstract class in C++. In C++, you define an interface that has no implementation, so that any class that inherits from it must implement the interface defined in the abstract class. Thus any method that operates on the type defined by the interface doesn't care what the implementation is, and behold you have information hiding and polymorphism. My impression about the abstract class nature of the Interface module was aided and abetted by the following sentences on page 29 of the Developers Guide: "To turn a component into a product you must fulfil many contracts. For the most part these contracts are not yet defined in terms of interfaces. . . ." This statements makes it sound as is there is something architecturally significant about the relationship between a component and its interface. However, after having studied the Developers Guide more closely, and playing around with some examples at the interpreter prompt, it seems that the Interface module does nothing of the kind. There is no enforcement -- no mechanism for raising an error if a component that claims to implement an interface does not do so entirely. For example, if I add a method to the interface that is not implemented by the component, isImplementedByInstancesOf() still returns true. On the other hand, there is a rich set of Interface.base methods for viewing the documentation for an Interface and for querying an interface. So the Interface/Component mechanism is intended to be a method of documentation, along with a query mechanism that ties the documentation to the component class. It seems like it's a way of adding some discipline to the process of documenting the contract for a component. But if one were disciplined enough to document through some other mechanism -- like a plain old API doc -- the Interface thing would be superfluous. Have I understood this whole thing correctly, or am I missing something? By the way, I am aware that the question of whether and to what extent an abstraction mechanism (such as abstract classes in C++) would be useful in Python has already been discussed on comp.lang.python (see for example: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=82ads7q9u5.fsf%40 acropolis.localdomain&rnum=7&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DISO-8859- 1%26q%3Dpurpose%2Bof%2Binterface%2Bclass%2Bgroup%253Acomp.lang.python.*%26bt nG%3DGoogle%2BSearch). I certainly do not mean to cause a flame war about this question here. I'm just trying to understand what the Interface module is for. Hi all, I am using Photo Product and Imagemagic engine. In ZMI when i am adding an object of type photo and a bmp image i am having a problem. The image is uploaded perfectly which i can see by clicking in the view tab. But in edit page of it no image is shown.Besides this no displays of different sizes are created for it through the imagemagic. I seen the documentation of imagemagic, there it is clearly written that BMP format is supported. Any explantion and solution is most welcome. Thanx in advance, Ashish.

[ANNOUNCE] Ariel Partners releases XMLTransform 0.8.0
by Craeg K Strong 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

XMLTransform enables Zope users to associate an XSLT transformer with an XML document that automatically renders the result of the transformation when called. It can behave like either a Page Template or a DTML Method. There are no constraints on the type of Zope objects used for the XML or XSLT. In fact, the content may cobbled together from multiple sources, as long as the final content may be obtained as well-formed XML from a single object for each. An XMLTransform is a Zope object that links an XML document to a desired XSLT script. The XMLTransform automatically runs the XSLT transformation and renders the results when accessed through DTML or page templates. An XMLTransform object contains neither the XML source document nor the XSLT transformer. Instead, it obtains each of them from two separate Zope objects, whose IDs are recorded as properties. In this way, an XMLTransform object represents an association between an XML document and a transformer. This feature differentiates XMLTransform from other XML/XSLT-based Zope products, in that it recognizes the fact that there is often a many to many relationship between XML documents and XSLT transformers. The XML source pointed to by an XMLTransform can come from anywhere, for example: * Content retrieved from an SQL database and converted to XML format * A DTMLDocument that is an XML file, with portions grabbed from other objects via DTML tags. * An XMLFile instance (XMLFile is part of the XMLKit Zope product) * A CVSFile object that points to an external XML document in a CVS repository (CVSFile is part of the CVSFile Zope product) The only requirement is that the XML be well-formed. In this way, XMLTransform can be used to form "pipelines," where the output of one object becomes the input of the next. This product offers a pluggable architecture that makes it easy to plug in different processors. It currently works with any of the following combinations: * PyXML 0.66 and 4Suite 0.11.1 * PyXML 0.7.1 and 4Suite 0.12.a2 (8/27/2002 CVS snapshot and later) * libxml2 2.4.24 and libxslt 1.0.20 (Python bindings) Grab it here: http://www.zope.org/Members/arielpartners/XMLTransform Regards, --Craeg Strong

[ANNOUNCE] Ariel Partners releases CVSFile 0.8.1
by Craeg K Strong 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

This is a new release of our CVSFile product. CVSFile enables Zope content to be served out of files residing in CVS sandboxes, and provides access to common CVS functions through the web in the Zope Management Interface. This new release adds much requested features like * batch add capability -- add instances whole directories at a time! * tunable parameters for CVS commands, and * programmability you may now create instances using scripts rather than through the web GUI if you wish. There are even a set of detailed example scripts to help you get started! Why not simply use ZCVSFolder? Because CVSFile stores files in CVS as normal files, rather than as Python "pickles." This makes it easy to use the same content, held in CVS, in both Zope and non-Zope contexts. CVSFile extends ExternalFile, and therefore inherits all of its functionality. This new release requires ExternalFile version 1.1.0. This product is compatible with the popular ExternalEditor product. Release 0.8.1 fixes compatibility with Python 2.1.3, Zope 2.5.1, ExternalFile 1.1.0, and XMLTransform 0.8 Grab it here: http://www.zope.org/Members/arielpartners/CVSFile Regards, --Craeg Strong
