Windows ODBC from Linux
by Marco Catunda 05 Jul '02

05 Jul '02

Hello, I would like to use a Zope Adapter to access MSAccess database in windows plataform via ODBC from Linux. Does anyone have a good idea for it? The solutions of dbtcp and ODBCSocketServer don't have Zope Adapter. I was thinking about two instance of Zope. One instance in windows with ODBC Adapter and other instance in Linux. The instance in Linux will use Adapter of instance in Windows. But I would like this solution become as transparent as possible for scripts in Linux Instance. Is it possible? -- Marco Catunda

How should my ISP set up Zope?
by Felix Ulrich-Oltean 05 Jul '02

05 Jul '02

Hi I'm looking to "help" my ISP (aletia.com) to add Zope to its list of services. I'm not very clued up on Zope at all, so I'd apreciate some advice on how best to do it. On each server (RH 7.2) they host several dozen users - generally all www stuff happens through Apache VirtualHost entries - i.e. I have a ~/public_html directory and I can put .htaccess files in there to specify how I want my pages to work. What is the best way to install Zope? I can think of 2 possibilities: 1. Each user can have their own Zope installation (it's not that big and they can do what they like with it). Then I guess as long as they install mod_fastcgi on apache, and make Zope run FastCGI-aware, you've got a decent system. The issues I have with this are: - how would you get the Zope server started when they reboot the machines (which does happen now and again) - can Zope and Apache get along if the users don't have access to httpd.conf, but only to .htaccess files under their ~/public_html? 2. There's one big Zope installation, and the ISP sets up an account for each user who's interested, with a virtual domain and gives them the Manager role for everything under that domain. I would appreciate advice/ideas. Some issues could include: - best way of providing backups - logging issues - installing Zope products Thanks in advance, Felix.

Calling ZSQL from DTML
by Joe Block 05 Jul '02

05 Jul '02

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'm finally getting back to a project that got sidetracked, and I'm running into a problem. I'm working with several tables in PostgreSQL, and need to generate a unique ID so I can insert some data into several tables and connect them by keyids. Thanks to advice I got here several months back, I'm using a sequence in PostgreSQL and retrieving the value of the sequence with a ZSQL method. Here's the source of the uniqueid method: SELECT nextval('uniqid_seq') My problem is, I want to take the results of the uniqueid ZSQL method and use it to fill in a hidden value in the newjob_form dtml method, so when it calls the spawnjob ZSQL method, it can fill in the jobid correctly in the inserts. spawnjob works just fine when I test it (inserts successfully to both tables) but I can't figure out how to get at the results of uniqueid. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I'm not making any progress. Thanks, jpb - -- Joe Block <jpb(a)ApesSeekingKnowledge.net> think about it. would you work for a company that couldn't tell the difference in quality of its employees' normal work product and the work product of someone on drugs without performing a test? -socks (agent01413(a)my-deja.com) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (Darwin) iD8DBQE9I4qryEXo8W2M9hsRAoixAKCZn829H2pz2we22l4vNnCWjTwxZQCdEAQz zn35gbOw6JnY+Hp2sKEDGkY= =75A7 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Maintaining Zope/ preventing Data.fs corruption
by Scott Syms 05 Jul '02

05 Jul '02

Hi, folks- I've recently lost a wiki site because of what looked like corruption in the data.fs file. So I'm wondering if there are any "grooming" tools out there that can report on the integrity of the Zope db and/or fix problems in the file before it bites the dust. How stable are the alternative storage engines for Zope, ie/ storing data in Oracle, etc? And is there an upper limit on how much data I can store in the Data.fs safely? much appreciated tks Scott Syms GTIS Atlantic PWGSC

| Odesílatel: Dieter Maurer <dieter(a)handshake.de> | It seems that you would like to render "index.htm" if it exists | in the current folder and do something else, otherwise. Yes, but it is in my initial question. I am sorry, but I need to learn english more (I know low word count). | The following code is not completely safe but may be sufficient | for your purposes: | | <dtml-if "_.hasattr(aq_explicit,'index.htm')"> | <dtml-var index.htm> | <dtml-else>.... | </dtml-if> Absolutelly sufficient and works :) Why it is not completely safe? photo folder question
by Lars Johannesson 05 Jul '02

05 Jul '02

Hi All, I'm a real zope newbie. Searched all over for this information, but no luck, so maybe the list can help. I'm using the photo and photo folder product. I've got it working using ImageMagick, and have verified that it will resize as requested. However, I'm not finding any documentation on how to really use it. What I need is a little sample dtml that shows the contents of the photo folder, like the method that lists all the objects in a regular folder. Thanks for any help. --Lars Johannesson

Nothing. Look at section "3.2 Acquisition". You learn their about "implicit" and "explicit" acquisition wrappers. "aq_explicit" takes an implicit acquisition wrapper and returns the corresponding explicit acquisition wrapper, i.e. the one with the same "aq_self" and "aq_parent". As the result is an explicit wrapper, attribute lookups are only performed (automatically) in "aq_self" and no longer in "aq_parent". This gives you the expected result as long as "aq_self" is not itself a wrapped object. In simple case, "aq_self" is not a wrapper, in more complex cases, it can be, however. Dieter

pbind - maximising performance on a multiprocessor Solaris box (Was: ZMySQLDA Help )

Kromer wrote: I do *not* recommend running Zope on multiprocessor machines without an ability to restrict Zope to execution on a single CPU. The reason for this is that the Python Global Interpreter Lock is shared inside a Zope process. However, threads in Python are backed by underlying OS threads. Thus, Zope will create multiple threads, and each thread is likely to be assigned to a different CPU by the OS scheduler. However, all CPUs but one which are dispatching any given Zope process will have to then wait and attempt to acquire the GIL; this process introduces significant latency into Python and thus into Zope. Linux has no native mechanism for processor binding. In fact, there is a CPU dispatch mask for processes, but there is no facility to set the mask that I know of. Solaris can use a system command like 'pbind' to bind a process to a particular CPU.
