Urgent: Date properties
by Thierry Florac 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

Hi... How can I handle a product property of "date" type which can handle null values and updatable through ZMI ?? Do I have to use a "string" property, converted internally to a "date" property ??? fairness of request processing
by Daniel Mahler 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

here is another variant of the minimal product:: from time import sleep, clock, time from threading import * from OFS import SimpleItem lock = Lock() condition = Condition() class minimal(SimpleItem.SimpleItem, Thread): "minimal object" meta_type = 'minimal' manage_options = ( {'label': 'View', 'action': 'index_html'}, ) def __init__(self, id): "initialise a new instance of Minimal" self.id = id def index_html(self): "used to view content of the object" time1 = time() lock.acquire() time2 = time() sleep(2) time3 = time() lock.release() time4 = time() return '%s\t%s\t%s\t%s'%(time1,time2,time3,time4) def manage_addMinimal(self, id, RESPONSE=None): "Add a Minimal to a folder." self._setObject(id, minimal(id)) RESPONSE.redirect('index_html') def manage_addMinimalForm(self): "The form used to get the instance' id from the user." return """<html> <body> Please type the id of the minimal instance:<br> <form name="form" action="manage_addMinimal"><br> <input type="text" name="id"><br> <input type="submit" value="add"> </form> </body> </html>""" The test below makes it seem that when hit with a batch of requests, the first 4 request get the 4 worker threads, with 3 waiting on the lock, but when the 1st thread releases the lock, it starts processing another request and reacquires the lock before the other three threads manage to wake up. So the other 3 threads are starved and the first thread processes the bulk of the requests. I hit Zope from a client with:: for i in range(20): Thread(target = retrieve).start() and get back:: 200 1026117262.34 1026117262.34 1026117264.33 1026117264.33 200 1026117264.34 1026117264.34 1026117266.33 1026117266.33 200 1026117266.34 1026117266.34 1026117268.33 1026117268.33 200 1026117268.34 1026117268.34 1026117270.33 1026117270.33 200 1026117270.34 1026117270.34 1026117272.33 1026117272.33 200 1026117272.34 1026117272.34 1026117274.33 1026117274.33 200 1026117274.34 1026117274.34 1026117276.33 1026117276.33 200 1026117276.34 1026117276.34 1026117278.33 1026117278.33 200 1026117278.34 1026117278.34 1026117280.33 1026117280.33 200 1026117280.34 1026117280.34 1026117282.33 1026117282.33 200 1026117282.34 1026117282.34 1026117284.33 1026117284.33 200 1026117284.34 1026117284.34 1026117286.33 1026117286.33 200 1026117286.34 1026117286.34 1026117288.33 1026117288.33 200 1026117288.34 1026117288.34 1026117290.33 1026117290.33 200 1026117290.34 1026117290.34 1026117292.33 1026117292.33 200 1026117292.34 1026117292.34 1026117294.33 1026117294.33 200 1026117294.34 1026117294.34 1026117296.33 1026117296.33 200 1026117262.35 1026117296.35 1026117298.34 1026117298.34 200 1026117262.35 1026117298.35 1026117300.35 1026117300.35 200 1026117262.34 1026117300.36 1026117302.36 1026117302.36 I can reproduce this beahviour reliably. tree tag's namespace
by Jerome Alet 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

Hi, I've got <dtml-tree> which branches_expr calls a method which returns a list of mappings. e.g. : [ { 'name' : 'jerome', 'age' : 72 }, { 'name' : 'albert', 'age': 2}, ... ] now in the body of the tree tag, I want to access each mapping, i.e. push it onto the current namespace. I've tried to add the "mapping" keyword, which works fine for <dtml-in>, but with no luck. I wanted to use the _.namespace() method, but I can't access the tree's "pseudo-sequence-item". is there a solution ? if no, then could the 'mapping' keyword be added to the tree tag and let it work like for dtml-in ? (I've looked at the code but I really don't know how to do) Any help appreciated Thanks in advance Jerome Alet

ZPT ==> DTML conversion impossible?
by Jaroslav Lukesh 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

Hi, I was get following code sample from examples (Root Folder/Examples/Navigation). It is working standalone, but I need no <ul><li> tags, only simple <br> between listed items instead. <div tal:define="siblings here/siblings.py"> <ul tal:condition="siblings"> <li tal:repeat="folder siblings"> <a href="folder" tal:attributes="href folder/absolute_url" tal:content="folder/getId">folder id</a> </li> </ul> <p tal:condition="not:siblings"><b>There are no sibling folders here.</b></p> </div> I have no idea to get out <li><ul> tags from ZPT as shown here (except generating <TR><TD> instead), so I decide to convert this piece of code to DTML, which is much pretty. But I dont know ZPT and my conversion tryouts are out :( Many thanks, Jaroslav Lukesh

Re: dtml-in mapping, and sessions
by Alejandro Fernandez 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

Hi, Please excuse my previous email about dtml-in getting key errors when using batch variables: I'm convinced now that the reason this whole thing is not working is because of the "mapping" attribute: how can I format my request result so that I don't need this attribute? It's currently looking like this: [{'DT_FIRST_ACCESS': '2002 06 25 03 58 31', 'REQUESTS': 109820, 'URL': '/index.html', 'SESSIONS': 145, 'PROC_TIME': 3.0, 'UNIQUES': 1234, 'DT_LAST_ACCESS': '2002 06 26 03 58 31'}, {'DT_FIRST_ACCESS': '2002 06 25 03 59 39', 'REQUESTS': 94203, 'URL': '/about.html', 'SESSIONS': 672, 'PROC_TIME': 3.0, 'UNIQUES': 920, 'DT_LAST_ACCESS': '2002 06 26 03 59 39'}, {'DT_FIRST_ACCESS': '2002 06 25 04 01 18', 'REQUESTS': 29348, 'URL': '/help/explain.html', 'SESSIONS': 743, 'PROC_TIME': 3.0, 'UNIQUES': 942, 'DT_LAST_ACCESS': '2002 06 26 04 01 18'}, {'DT_FIRST_ACCESS': '2002 06 25 04 01 52', 'REQUESTS': 43425, 'URL': '/gallery/1.html', 'SESSIONS': 23, 'PROC_TIME': 3.21, 'UNIQUES': 764, 'DT_LAST_ACCESS': '2002 06 26 04 01 52'}] I think if this could be altered so it didn't need "mapping", then the dtml-in loop would be able to use all the little batch variables(sequence-query etc) that are now not allowed... is this true? xmlrpc fault error messages
by Tim Hicks 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

Does anyone have a nice looking way of dealing with these? The problem for me is that I just get the zope attribution button in my browser and have to scour the html source to find the real problem. The xmlrpclib.Fault string seems to be dumped in its entirety into the standard_error_message, resulting in malformed html. I tried this <begin python> error_type_re = re.compile('<strong>Error Type.+?</strong>', re.IGNORECASE | re.DOTALL) error_value_re = re.compile('<strong>Error Value.+?</strong>', re.IGNORECASE | re.DOTALL) class zlaveXmlrpcError(Exception): def __init__(self, xmlrpc_fault): error_type = error_type_re.search(str(xmlrpc_fault)).group() error_value = error_value_re.search(str(xmlrpc_fault)).group() self.args = (error_type, error_value) <end python> but when zope displays my zlaveXmlrpcError, I don't get the 'Site Error' and other standard_error_message formatting. tim

threading in zope
by Daniel Mahler 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

I am trying to figure out how Zope processes concurrent requests. I am running Zope using ZServer (without a webserver in front) My initial investigations suggest contradictory answers: * ZServer uses medusa, which uses asyncore which works by single threaded select multiplexing * z2.py has:: # The size of the thread pool, if ZODB3 is used. NUMBER_OF_THREADS=4 sugesting we are running multi threaded. * the following modification of the Minimal Product How-To, suggests that requests are being processed single threaded:: from time import sleep, clock, time from OFS import SimpleItem class minimal(SimpleItem.SimpleItem, Thread): "minimal object" meta_type = 'minimal' manage_options = ( {'label': 'View', 'action': 'index_html'}, ) def __init__(self, id): "initialise a new instance of Minimal" self.id = id def index_html(self): "used to view content of the object" time1 = time() sleep(10) time2 = time() return '<html><body>Hello World<br>%s<br>%s<br></body></html>'%(time1,time2) def manage_addMinimal(self, id, RESPONSE=None): "Add a Minimal to a folder." self._setObject(id, minimal(id)) RESPONSE.redirect('index_html') def manage_addMinimalForm(self): "The form used to get the instance' id from the user." return """<html> <body> Please type the id of the minimal instance:<br> <form name="form" action="manage_addMinimal"><br> <input type="text" name="id"><br> <input type="submit" value="add"> </form> </body> </html>""" If I fire several requests to an instance of this class in rapid succession, Zope serializes them time1 of the second is after time2 of the first, time1 of the third is after time2 of the second and so on, suggesting that Zope is processing the requests purely sequentially. thanks Daniel

Is ZODB a true object database?
by Russ 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

I'm both a novice at Zope as well as Python. I'm learning both concurrently, and I'm impressed with everything I've learned so far. I see myself becoming a true-blue Zope/Python fan. I'm also new to OOP, so I'm studying the principles of OOP as well. I have 2 questions: 1. Is ZODB a true object-oriented database? If so, does this mean that all web items like pages, images, css files, etc. are stored only as objects in the ZODB? 2. I don't see any web file structure in the Zope program at all. Nothing like a wwwroot directory exists anywhere on my PC under Zope. Does that mean that ALL objects created in Zope ONLY exist in the ZODB? And does that also mean the only place I see the web file structure is when I log on to Zope on port 8080? Just wanted to make sure I understand the underlying principles of Zope. Thanks in advance for your help. Sincerely, Russ Chaffin

Tree tag problem
by Dennis Allison 08 Jul '02

08 Jul '02

I know there is an active bug report on the tree tag using the sort option when not all items in the current folder have a property and that propert is used as a sort key... My problem is a bit simpler -- I have a jested group of folders ( say A, B, and C) enclosed in a folder (say OUTER). The structure is OUTER A B C which I am trying to render <dtml-tree OUTER sort="displayOrder"> <dtml-var title_and_id> </dtml-tree> I have set a property 'displayOrder" for each of the folders A, B, and C using the ZMI. (In the real world it gets set programmatically, but ...) Assuming that the sorting were to occur, I want the order to be B, C, A and have set the displayOrder values appropriately as strings. Running the progam fragment in a wrapper generates the error: Attribute Error: displayOrder with a reference in TreeTag.py where displayOrder is used in a getattr() call. Are properties not attributes of an object? What's the problem?
